Kansas Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis has suspended running back James Sims for the first three games of the 2012 season following Sims' arrest Sunday morning on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports.
Sims was picked up by KU campus police at 2 a.m., according to the report. Sims posted $500 bond and has a court date set for April 25.
"Every player on our team knows and understands our rules and regulations," Weis said. "They also know the consequences for violations."
Sims has led the Jayhawks in rushing in each of the last two seasons, rushing for 742 yards in 2010 and 727 yards in 2011. Sims has scored nine touchdowns in each of his two seasons with the Jayhawks, adding 33 receptions for 253 yards and a touchdown as a receiver out of the backfield.
