The LSU Tigers are re-upping defensive coordinator John Chavis with an expected three-year deal worth about $1.1 million per year. Les Miles has confirmed Chavis will be making "market value," but hasn't specified numbers himself. Miles added that Chavis has turned down offers to leave Baton Rouge for other jobs and has been "tremendously loyal."
That price tag would put Chavis right up there with Clemson Tigers offensive coordinator Chad Morris, USC Trojans defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, all of whom make a mil or so. Gus Malzahn made about the same as Auburn Tigers offensive coordinator.
Since coming over from the Tennessee Volunteers in 2009, Chavis has led LSU's defense to an improvement every year. The Tigers ranked No. 32 in the country the year before Chavis took over, and they rose as high as No. 2 nationally last season.
