Upon realizing the Arkansas Razorbacks had inked John L. Smith to a 10-month contract, many observers rejoiced at the thought of going through all this again in just under a year. Just under a year, friends? We get to start it up right now, as Arkansas already started looking for its next coach even before hiring its current one.
Athletic director Jeff Long, to the Arkansas News Bureau:
"I will wait until after the season to take action, but certainly I'll be evaluating and I'll be talking to people," Long said. "This really gives me extended time period to both evaluate this current staff and other coaches.
"So, it's really a luxury. ... I think this process gives us a chance to move quickly after the end of the season if that's our decision."
That same list of potential hires we'd been working with? Let's continue with that for the time being. Names like Gus Malzahn and Charlie Strong become much, much more feasible with a longer timetable.
