Jeff Godfrey Making Central Florida Return With Position Change

Stay connected with SB Nation

Departed Central Florida Knights quarterback Jeff Godfrey will return to UCF after a few months away from the program, but this time as a wide receiver and run-first situational quarterback. After a family spat that included his father calling coach George O'Leary a racist, everything's apparently been sorted out just fine.

The 2010 Conference USA Freshman of the Year struggled as a sophomore. Backup Blake Bortles showed more of an arm and made more big plays through the air, but he lacked Godfrey's wheels. All told, Godfrey posted 2,303 yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns in 2011 -- not a terrible outing for a most-of-the-time starting sophomore quarterback, but evidently not enough to hang onto a quarterbacking job. Well, that and leaving the team for like half a year.

Said O'Leary to Florida today:

"I've met with him a couple of times and basically he has some things he has to take care of regarding school itself, some sanctions he has to deal with,'' O'Leary said. "If he does that I told him that, meeting with the coaching staff and myself the last time, that I would take him back.
