The California Golden Bears will be without a talented rising sophomore linebacker this season, as they announced Cecil Whiteside has been kicked off the team for a violation of team rules. Whiteside appeared in nine games as a freshman, making 12 tackles and putting up an impressive three sacks and two forced fumbles while working as a backup pass rusher.

Whiteside was a four-star recruit from the 2010 class, ranked by Rivals as the No. 4 outside linebacker in the country and the No. 7 player in California. He dealt with some academic issues while trying to get onto the field for Cal, however.

With two senior linebackers gone from last year's squad, Whiteside would've had a chance to push for some serious playing time. He's been heralded as a potential breakout star ever since he signed on, but it looks like he'll now have to break out somewhere else.
