Illinois defensive end Michael Buchanan broke his jaw during an altercation Saturday.
Illinois defensive end Michael Buchanan, who was second on the Fighting Illini with 7.5 sacks last season, broke his jaw during an altercation Saturday.
According to Illinois sports information assistant director Kent Brown, Buchanan's jaw is wired shut. Brown said he hopes Buchanan, who is expected to see a specialist, will be ready for fall camp. Illinois coach Tim Beckman said the team is still gathering facts of the incident.
"We're still in the process of exactly how it happened," Beckman said.
Buchanan is coming off a season in which he earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors. His 7.5 sacks were good for fourth in the Big Ten. During the first three years of his Illinois career, Buchanan played in 34 games, racking up 104 tackles, 9.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. In addition to his 7.5 sacks last season, Buchanan also had 13.5 tackles for loss.
