As we get the voting underway for running back, fans can choose between a member of the Pony Express, the man known as "Sweetness," a Horned Frog and a Heisman winner.
If there has been a contentious position in this selection process, it's running back. Part of that is because of names that were or weren't submitted to the committee, some of that was because there's no lack of worthy candidates, and part of that is probably because on many teams, the running back is one of the most popular players among fans. Here are your choices for running back -- and, again, politicking is encouraged.
This poll will stay open all weekend, with the full list of winners revealed Monday morning. (Also: a word from the commish on players who didn't make the list.)
Eric Dickerson, SMU Mustangs
Part of the "Pony Express," Dickerson rushed for 4,450 yards and 47 touchdowns in his career. Dickerson had 28 career 100-yards games. All of that despite sharing a backfield with Craig James.
Walter Payton, Jackson St. Tigers
"Sweetness." Over 3,500 yards in his career and 65 touchdowns. A 6.1 yard per carry average. His only BCS offer, by the way, came from Kansas.
LaDanian Tomlinson, TCU Horned Frogs
Rushed for 406 yards in one game, even if it was against UTEP. Twice ran for 2,000 yards in a season. Two-time WAC Player of the Year.
Herschel Walker, Georgia Bulldogs
A three-time All-American who rushed for 5,259 yards -- in three seasons. Was the centerpiece of an offense that steered Georgia to three straight SEC championships and a national title. Heisman winner.
Previously inducted RB: Ricky Williams, Texas.
The SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame is a summer project involving all of the network's excellent college football blogs. Each community could nominate five of its own for inclusion, with 10 of those nominees being inducted by our selection committee, which included reps from most FBS conferences. The remaining 10 will be chosen by public vote Wednesday and Thursday.
