Mario Cristobal, possibly the hottest coach on the market for teams not quite within the $3 million annual salary range, has a new deal with Florida International that extends him through 2017, the school announced Friday.
Cristobal's name was connected with Penn State, Rutgers, and several other big jobs during the latest round of the coaching carousel. He has ties to the Northeast, and reports even came out indicating he'd make his return to Rutgers after Greg Schiano left. That didn't happen, and now he has his FIU reward.
In five years, he's steered a program that didn't even have a proper weight room into two straight bowl appearances.
Whether the Golden Panthers, who are favored to win the Sun Belt this year, can hang onto their program architect remains to be seen. With facilities improvements and a competition upgrade in Conference USA on the way, things are still looking up for Cristobal either way.
