Texas A&M's Saturday scrimmage left Kevin Sumlin "disappointed" in his team's energy.

Texas A&M's a fresh face in the SEC in 2012 and, with the strong performances of Johnny Manziel and Trey Williams in fall camp, a pair of freshmen may be the Aggies' offensive forces this season. But coach Kevin Sumlin called his team's energy "disappointing" on a day of "backup football" on Saturday.

Sumlin was more impressed with his young defense than his offense on Saturday, Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle reports, possibly because it needs a bit of a confidence boost with A&M's first game less than two weeks away.

One of the focuses of Saturday's scrimmage was getting younger players and backups some experience in game conditions at Kyle Field, leading to the "backup football" Sumlin described.

ESPN's Sam Khan Jr. reports that Manziel took most of the snaps with the first-team offense, and that Williams is in for some ribbing from Sumlin for getting run down from behind.

Both outlets report that transfer Brandon Williams is waiting on the result of an NCAA waiver request that would make him eligible to play in 2012 after transferring from Oklahoma. If he gets it, the former five-star recruit would likely compete with Trey Williams for the starter's role at running back.
