Fresh off back-to-back BCS bowl appearances, the Stanford Cardinal will open their season Friday looking for their third straight season with at least 11 wins.
In addition to being its season opener, Friday's game against San Jose State will also be the first game in the post Andrew Luck era for Stanford. Josh Nunes will take Luck's place at quarterback Friday, after he beat out Brett Nottingham in a close quarterback competition. Nunes, a junior, will be making his first start and just third appearance for the Cardinal.
Fortunately for Nunes, he will have Stepfan Taylor to hand the ball to. Taylor, fresh off a season in which he ran for 1,330 yards and 10 touchdowns, enters the 2012 season as one of the best running backs in the Pac-12 if not the country.
The Cardinal will begin their 2012 season by hosting San Jose State. The Spartans finished 5-7 in 2011, a substantial improvement over its 1-12 record in 2010. If SJSU is going to improve again in 2012, it will likely be because of its passing offense, which finished 23rd in the country in yards per game last season.
