The Notre Dame Fighting Irish open their 2012 season against the Navy Midshipmen in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday morning. The Irish defeated Navy 56-14 in their meeting last season, though that was with quarterback Tommy Rees, who has been suspended for the 2012 opener.
Redshirt freshman Everett Golson will start in Rees' place -- it will be the first start of Golson's collegiate career. The 6'0 180-pounder spent the 2011 season serving as quarterback of the scout team.
For Navy to have any hope of avenging last season's loss, a much better defensive effort will be necessary. The Navy defense allowed Notre Dame to up 440 total yards of offense and average over seven yards per play from scrimmage in the 2011 meeting.
Game time, TV channel: 9:00 a.m. ET, CBS
Point spread: Notre Dame is favored by 17 points
