Fresh off an 8-5 season in 2011, the Virginia Cavaliers will open their 2012 season Saturday looking for their first back-to-back winning seasons since 2004-05.
Virginia will host the Richmond Spiders to begin the 2012 season. Richmond, a FCS team, went 3-8 last season. While Richmond may seem like an easy opponent for Virginia, the Cavaliers should be cautious about being overconfident as the Spiders knocked off Duke 23-21 in the season opener last year.
The Virginia offense will once again center around senior running back Perry Jones. Jones rushed for 915 yards on 184 carries last season while also catching 48 passes for 506 yards. He combined to score eight offensive touchdowns and is expected to be the Cavaliers top threat again in 2012.
The Cavaliers made big strides on defense last season and will look to do the same against Richmond to start 2012. Virginia finished 38th in the country in defensive yards per game allowed last season, a significant jump from the 78th they finished the year before.
