The North Carolina Tar Heels open their season at home against the Elon Phoenix on Sept. 1.

The North Carolina Tar Heels open their 2012 season playing host to the Elon Phoenix on Sept. 1. The Tar Heels, who finished last season fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal division at 7-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play, are expected to finish somewhere in the middle once again.

Also for the season opener, as SB Nation's Carolina March notes, it's still unclear as to who will be calling defensive plays:

"Worrisome is the fact that the person calling the defensive plays isn't being made public. If you recall, Carolina has both a defensive coordinator, Dan Disch, and an associate head coach for defense, Vic Koenning."

The Phoenix of the Southern Conference enter the 2012 season on the heels of a 5-6 overall campaign last year, and will look to get off to a strong start on the road.

Game time, TV channel: 12:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network

Point spread: No line
