Boise State Vs. Michigan State Final Score: Le'Veon Bell Carries Sparty, Everything Else

Two teams in heavy rebuilding mode proved ... Michigan State has an incredible running back and a first-time starting quarterback? I think that's about all we learned, as Sparty survived, 17-13.

Boise State Vs. Michigan State Final Score: Le'Veon Bell Leads Spartans Past Broncos

Michigan State rallied in the fourth quarter to avoid a season-opening upset by the Boise St. Broncos, winning, 17-13, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. This was Boise State's fourth consecutive year opening its season against a ranked opponent, but the first time they were unable to get the win.

Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell was a one-man wrecking crew, as he set a career-high by rushing for 210 yards on 44 carries with two touchdowns. He also caught six receptions for 55 yards.

The passing game for Michigan State did not fare well under new quarterback Andrew Maxwell, who threw three interceptions with one returned for a touchdown by Boise State's Jeremy Ioane. With the passing struggles, the Spartans leaned heavily on Bell, who was able to shred the Boise State defense.

For a long stretch in the second half, it looked like the Broncos were going to squeak out a three-point win. Michigan State was able to score the only touchdown in the half with 7:43 left in the game on a nine-play, 56-yard drive that was capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run by Bell.

The key play came with 6:38 remaining in the fourth quarter with Boise State trailing, 17-13. On fourth-and-2 at Michigan State's 42, the Broncos ran a quick option play which was enough for a first down, but the Spartans had called a defensive timeout just before the ball was snapped. On the second fourth down attempt, Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick threw an incomplete pass.

Michigan State then methodically drove the ball down the field, collecting first downs until time expired.

Michigan State Puts Together BET Uncut Tribute On Tip Drill

Joe Southwick isn't having a great night against Michigan State in his first start for Boise State, but, c'mon, fate, give a guy a better chance of becoming something more than "Not Kellen Moore" than you do here, please.

Sparty-int_medium

It's not really clear where Southwick was going with this throw, except "the wrong place no no no stop," but it sure wasn't supposed to go off Isaiah Lewis' hands and into R.J. Williamson's as Williamson rolled over on the ground.

Fate decided to be nice to Boise State on the next drive when Andrew Maxwell threw a screen pass that turned into a Broncos pick-six, but that doesn't make Southwick any more impressive. He's 5-for-13 through the air for 63 yards, slightly off the pace that Moore usually set.

Boise State Cheerleaders Trampled, But All Is Not Lost

Are saves a stat in college football? If so, this Boise State cheerleader is now leading the nation in saves for hanging on to his hoist partner despite an incoming Darqueze Dennard. Clutch cheerleading, my friend.

Le'Veon Bell Wins Gold In Bronco Hurdling

Oh, you know, just 240-pound thumper Le'Veon Bell hurdling a Boise State defender. No biggie:

Reasonable bookmakers would have made betting the under on 0.5 hurdles of large men for Bell this year a no-win proposition, so let's hope someone actually did make that bet. (GIF via Mocksession.)

Michigan State went on to score on this drive, their first of the 2012 season, with Bell running the ball eight times for 35 yards and plunging in for a touchdown from a yard out. The score on the board is 7-0, Sparty, but the style point tally is far more lopsided.

Four Boise State Players Suspended Vs. Michigan State

Four Boise State players have been suspended for the Broncos' opener against Michigan State, according to Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman.

Chris Roberson, a three-year starter at long snapper is the most notable suspension. Joining him will be third-string quarterback Jimmy Laughrea, reserve wide receiver Dallas Burroughs and third-string tailback Jay Ajayi. The quartet were suspended for unspecified team-rules violations

Ajayi is missing the game as a result of his suspension from the MAACO Bowl last season. In December, the redshirt freshman pled guilty to misdemeanor petty theft. He is expected back for the Broncos' September 15th matchup against Miami of Ohio.

Roberson will be replaced at long-snapper on Friday night by sophomore Kevin Keane, a walk-on transfer from Ohio Wesleyan.
