Snap Judgment: The Fearsome Foursome Separates Early

The first Saturday of the new college football season reminded us of what we already know: Alabama, USC, LSU and Oregon remain a cut above the rest of the nation.

Bob Asmussen Regrets Putting Michigan At No. 1 On His AP Poll Ballot

Bob Asmussen was the only voter to rank Michigan No. 1 in the preseason AP Poll. This tweet was sent when Alabama led 31-0, but it's no less true now that 'Bama's "only" up 31-7 on Michigan at halftime.

Miami Vs. Boston College Final Score: Duke Johnson's Impressive Debut Powers Hurricanes To 41-32 Victory

Miami Hurricanes freshman running back Duke Johnson got his fair share of national attention Saturday, carrying the ball seven times for 135 yards and two touchdowns while doing his part to propel his team to a 41-32 win over Boston College on the road.

Eagles quarterback Chase Rettig tried all he could with 441 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 32-of-51 passing but couldn't get much help in the run game, with Boston College averaging 2.9 yards per attempt.

It looked like Miami might just run away with it when Morris completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Lewis in the early fourth but Rettig refused to let his team go down without a fight. Boston College's junior quarterback cut the deficit to 11 with a 17-yard touchdown toss to Tahj Kimble and continued that momentum with an 81-yard drive on the following possession.

Ultimately though, the Miami defense would hold strong with a goal-line stand that included stuffing a fourth-down quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line. Hurricanes head coach Al Golden would then run off all but four seconds on the clock before taking an intentional safety that would effectively ice the game.

Box Score Hero: The aforementioned Johnson, who had touchdown rushes of 54 and 56 yards.

Rankings Ramifications: This game isn't going to propel either team into the rankings but it's certainly a good start for Miami.

But Did They Cover?: Miami was favored by 2 so they did their part. The over/under was also crushed, as the bar was set at 43 for the game.

For More On This Game: For Hurricanes coverage, head on over to The 7th Floor. If the Eagles are more your cup of tea, pay a visit to BC Interruption.

Next Week's Schedule: Miami continues their mini opening road trip with a visit to Kansas State next Saturday, while BC gets the luxury of remaining at home and attempting to rebound against Maine on the same day.

Southern Miss Vs. Nebraska Final Score: Cornhuskers Dominate In 49-20 Win

The Southern Miss. Golden Eagles proved a game opponent to the Nebraska Cornhuskers through the first half of their game on Saturday, but quickly fell behind to the No. 17-ranked team.

Nebraska put up three second-half touchdowns en route to a dominating 49-20 victory. Southern Miss. was only able to score once in the second half, on a Corey Acosta 37-yard field goal.

Nebraska jumped out to a 14-0 lead with back-to-back touchdowns in the first quarter. Rex Burkhead broke a 57-yard rushing touchdown to put up the first six points, and Taylor Martinez hit Kenny Bell for a 26-yard touchdown pass for score No. 2. Tracy Lampley responded immediately though, returning a Brett Maher kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown following that second score.

Southern Miss tied the contest with an 11-play, 73-yard drive that ended with a Chris Campbell touchdown pass to Dominique Sullivan for 24 yards. That drive followed a Maher missed field goal for Nebraska. On the next drive, Nebraska answered back with an 11-play drive of their own, ending with another Martinez touchdown pass.

Martinez finished with 349 yards passing, completing 26-of-34 pass attempts. He had a whopping five touchdown passes on the day. Campbell only had one for Southern Miss., along with his 69 yards passing. Along with Burkhead, Braylon Heard had a rushing touchdown for Nebraska.

Box Score Hero: Taylor Martinez and his five touchdowns -- he looked in command the entire game and really made things click. Nebraska would have taken this even without the 200-plus rushing yards.

Rankings Ramifications: Southern Miss. isn't ranked, but a dominating win like this and a performance like that out of its starting quarterback might just push Nebraska up a spot or two from No. 17.

But Did They Cover?: Nebraska opened at 15-point favorites and moved to hover around 20-point favorites, so they covered wherever you got them.

Next Week's Schedule: Nebraska will hit the road to take on UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. ET, while Southern Miss. will return home to host East Carolina on Sept. 15 at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Northern Iowa Vs. Wisconsin Final Score: Badgers Hang On 26-21, Danny O'Brien Throws 2 TDs

No. 12 Wisconsin scored 19 consecutive points and held Northern Iowa scoreless for nearly three quarters, but Northern Iowa mounted a furious rally in the final 14 minutes and forced Wisconsin to hold on for a 26-21 win.

Northern Iowa's Sawyer Kollmorgen found Chad Owens for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 2:05 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 19-7. Wisconsin's Danny O'Brien found Jared Abbrederis for a 53-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the fourth quarter to make the lead 26-7. O'Brien and Abbrederis also connected on a touchdown in the first half.

Northern Iowa responded with two touchdown passes from Kollmorgen to David Johnson, one for 55 yards and one for 31 yards, to make it 26-21.

Northern Iowa forced a Wisconsin punt and got the ball back with 5:39 remaining. They drove into Wisconsin territory, but couldn't convert a fourth down and gave it back to Wisconsin, who ran out the clock.

O'Brien was 19-for-23 for 219 yards and touchdowns. Montee Ball had 32 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown. Kollmorgen went 18-for-34 for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson had four catches for 107 yards.

Box Score Hero: Danny O'Brien was efficient passing (19-for-23) and he connected on some big passing plays for the Badgers.

Rankings Ramifications: Wisconsin came into the game ranked 12th. The game was closer than expected, but the fact that they won means they shouldn't be hurt too badly in the rankings.

But Did They Cover?: Wisconsin was favored by 33 points heading into this game, so they didn't cover.

Next Week's Schedule: Wisconsin will hit the road to take on Oregon State on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. ET, while Northern Iowa hosts Central State on Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. ET.
