Tre Roberson Injury: Indiana QB To Miss Season With Broken Leg

Quarterback Tre Roberson will miss the rest of the 2012 season after suffering a gruesome broken leg in the first half of Indiana's 45-6 romp over UMass.

Roberson had surgery that inserted a titanium rod into his leg on Sunday, and he's expected to begin a recovery process that will take roughly five to six months, which is obviously longer than the college football season. Roberson will receive a medical redshirt and retain a year of eligibility.

Next on the depth chart is Cam Coffman, who, like Roberson, moved the ball well against UMass, completing 16 of 22 passes in his first career game for Indiana. Before that, the sophomore had spent a year at a junior college at Arizona, winning a national junior college championship. Behind him on the depth chart will be one of four true freshman quarterbacks. Indiana has played one game against an FCS team and one against a team that was in the FCS last year. Now Coffman will face Indiana's most difficult opponent of the season thus far, a MAC team in Ball State before heading into the Big Ten schedule.

Roberson became the first true freshman quarterback in school history to start a game in 2011, and although the team went 0-5 in his starts, Roberson true promise as a dual-threat quarterback. The freshman tossed twice as many picks as touchdowns due to some rookie mistakes, but he was expected to make progress as a passer in his sophomore year for a team that has already doubled its win total from last season in two games.

The injury was so severe that Roberson had to be taked off the field in the ambulance. Before the injury Roberson was having a big game by completing 6-of-11 passes for for 98 yards, tossed a pair of touchdowns and also rushed for 105 before leaving the game.

Roberson was replaced by Cameron Coffman who is performing well as his replacement, and has completed 8-of-11 passes for 92 yards. The game is at the half and Indiana is leading 38-6 over Massachusetts.
