The Baylor Bears kick off their 2012 campaign in the evening at home against Southern Methodist University on Sunday, Sept. 2.
The Bears, following a 10-3 (6-3 in Big 12 Conference play) season that ended on a six-game winning streak and was capped with a rollicking 67-56 shootout win over the University of Washington in the Alamo Bowl, must replace the orchestrator behind those high point totals. The Washington Redskins selected Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III second overall in this year's NFL Draft.
Senior signal-caller Nick Florence will take over after Griffin III's explosive 2011 season as Baylor hopes to keep last season's late momentum rolling.
SMU finished third in Conference USA's West division at 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The Mustangs ended last season enjoying a two-game winning streak, including a 28-6 triumph over the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Compass Bowl.
Game time, TV channel: 6:30 p.m. ET, FSN
Point spread: Baylor favored by 12
