The Illinois Fighting Illini head to Tempe, Ariz., to take on the Arizona St. Sun Devils in a major-conference clash on Saturday night. The two teams squared off in 2011, with Illinois taking a narrow 17-14 victory.
The Sun Devils opened their season with a 63-6 beat down of the FCS Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. ASU dominated on both sides of the ball, out-gaining Northern Arizona 554 to 237. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Taylor Kelly looked solid in his first start, completing 15 of 19 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown.
The Illini also started their schedule off on the right foot with a 24-7 win over the Western Michigan Broncos. Illinois jumped on top early, building a 17-0 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Ashante Williams closed the door on Western Michigan when he picked off a pass and took it 60 yards for the touchdown with 9:06 left to play in the fourth.
Arizona State leads the all-time series between the two teams, 2-1.
