Utah State jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and led 13-3 at halftime, but that lead quickly diminished in the third quarter as Utah scored 10 points to tie the game. The Aggies jumped back ahead 20-13 with 9:10 to play in the game, but Utah once again tied it up with 3:19 to play.
The Utes had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Coleman Petersen missed a 52-yard field goal attempt as time expired. The Aggies got the ball to start overtime and quarterback Chuckie Keeton put them in position to win with a 23-yard run to the 1-yard line. Utah State scored two plays later to take a 27-20 lead.
The Utes appeared to have tied the game once again when Jake Murphy caught a 6-yard touchdown pass, but he was flagged for pass interference. Jon Hays' fourth-down pass to DeVonte Christopher fell incomplete and Aggie fans rushed the field to celebrate the victory.
Keeton finished 22-of-32 for 216 yards and two touchdowns while Utah's star running back John White IV ran for 96 yards on 27 carries. Utah starting quarterback Jordan Wynn left the game with an injury and was replaced by Hays, who completed 12-of-26 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.
Box Score Hero: Chuckie Keeton's 216 passing yards may not look like much, but the quarterback didn't turn the ball over and also ran for 77 yards, including a huge run in overtime to set up the winning touchdown.
Rankings Ramifications: Neither team came into the week ranked in the top 25, but Utah was listed as one of the teams receiving votes. That will likely change after the loss to Utah State.
But Did They Cover? Utah entered the game as 7-point favorites, a spread they obviously failed to cover with the loss.
