Recap: B-Y-U vs. Colorado State

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Harvey Unga rushed for 113 yards and three scores as 19th-ranked BYU beat Colorado State, 42-23, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in the Mountain West Conference opener for each team.

Max Hall completed 18-of-29 passes for 241 yards with a pair of touchdowns and two interceptions for the Cougars, who stopped the Rams' winning streak at six going back to last season.

The Cougars (3-1, 1-0 MWC) scored 21 points in the first quarter with the help of two interceptions and a blocked punt.

Grant Stucker connected on 30-of-50 passes for 372 yards with two TDs and a pair of interceptions for the Rams (3-1, 0-1). Tyson Liggett caught 11 passes for 156 yards and a TD.

Unga's first touchdown, a four-yard run, came after Brian Logan picked off a Stucker pass.

On the ensuing drive the Rams drove 66 yards to the BYU 14, but Ben Deline missed a 32-yard field goal attempt with 7:10 left.

With under four minutes to play in the first quarter, BYU's Andrew Rich picked off a deflected pass at the 40-yard line. Two plays later Hall ran it in from the two for the Cougars' second touchdown with 3:04 left in the quarter.

Unga's five-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left came two plays after a blocked Colorado State punt.

All three Cougar drives were less than 40 seconds in duration.

The Rams got on the board in the second quarter with a three-yard pass from Stucker to Dion Morton with 9:56 to the half.

The first half ended with the Cougars leading 21-7.

BYU found the end zone with 6:56 left in the third quarter when Hall hit Dennis Pitta with an 18-yard pass to make the score 28-7.

Colorado State's Leonard Mason capped off a 64-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-14 with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter.

The quarter closed with the Rams in possession after a Michael Kawulok interception of a Hall pass. Less than a minute into the final 15 minutes, Deline connected on a 38-yard field goal for Colorado State to make the score 28-17.

Unga's third touchdown was a two-yard run with 7:04 remaining. Stucker hit Liggett with a 13-yard scoring strike, the two-point attempt failed and the Cougars led 35-23 with 5:02 left in the game.

After an unsuccessful onside kick attempt by the Rams, the Cougars needed less than a minute to score. Hall hit Spencer Hafoka with a 24-yard touchdown pass to increase the BYU lead to 42-23 with 4:05 left.

BYU owns a 38-27-3 edge versus the Rams in the all-time series. The Cougars have won 13 straight home conference games.
