Boston College 34, Maine 3: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Yesterday the Eagles played their annual FCS game against the Maine Black Bears. BC did what it needed to do to leave with a 34-3 victory. As Jeff said on Twitter yesterday, the W was arguably "the most disappointing 31 point victory ever." There certainly were a lot of mental mistakes, and room for improvement, but BC did have areas of their game that did improve.

Let's take a look at some of those areas:

The Good

Student Attendance -- Bravo BC students. In one of the games that is annually the lowest attended, you showed up and were loud the entire game. Even when season ticket holders decided to leave early, or not show up at all, you all stayed and cheered the team on.

Spiffy Evans -- I will be the first to admit I have been riding the Spiffster since the beginning of the season, and yesterday's game started out no different. The play that almost made me lose my top was when he waved off a punt at the 15 yard line instead of fair catching it. The Black Bears special teams unit down the ball at the 1 yard line. However, I will take my humble pie and fully admit that Mr. Evans completely turned it around after that. He had a nice touchdown catch in the end zone, and his 75 yard punt return for a touchdown -- an Eagles' first since Rich Gunnell in 2009 -- sealed the game for the Eagles. Spiffy finished the game with 155 yards. Take a bow, Spiffy.

Brian Mihalik -- The big man stepped it up, showing us that indeed we have a play maker on the front line. I can't find the statistics but Mihalik must have had 3-4 swatted balls, a sack, and had solid pressure the entire game.

The Return of Deuce Finch -- Kimble struggled and Andre Williams was pretty middle of the road, but it was refreshing to see Finch play and run effectively in the Doug Martin offense. He clearly appeared to be the most talented running back in the group, and I expect he will continue that success next week against Northwestern.

Honorable Mentions -- Manny Asprilla, Chase Rettig and Alex Amidon

The Bad

Conservative Game Plan -- Look, I get it. Boston College won by 31 points but Spaz and Martin's plan did not seem as "go for the throat" as they were last week. The perfect example of this was when BC had the ball on the Maine 3 on a 4th and 7 and Spaz elected to punt. I'm not saying that BC needs to go against the grain and make stupid play calls, but you want that killer instinct to put away a team. For crying out loud, it's Maine football, a team that was struggling to do anything.

Chase Rettig's Reads -- Chase Rettig had a fine game today. He didn't make the game changing blunder that he did against Miami, but he also seemed to miss some of his reads. There were at least two occasions -- I'd have to re-watch the game to see if there were more -- where Rettig missed receivers that were completely wide open and would have led to huge plays. Rettig locked into his reads too quickly and against better defenses this could become an issue.

Honorable Mentions -- Injury to Jake Sinkovec, the entire Maine Offense

The Ugly

Tahj Kimble's Fumble -- I love Tahj Kimble's abilities and the explosiveness and versatility that he brings to Doug Martin's offense. But that fumble was completely inexcusable. You have to hold on to the ball near the goal line. Mistakes like this against Maine are one thing, but that's two games in a row with a costly Kimble mistake. That has got to stop.

The Unnecessary Quarterback Sacks -- Maine had two sacks that I counted that should have never happened. BC's front line was much bigger than the Black Bears, which may have caused the smaller Bears lineman to get past the BC offensive line. The other reason was that Rettig held the ball too long. He needs to throw it away in those situations. And what happened when Rettig was sacked? He got hurt, had to leave the game, and had an MRI done on his back. Thankfully, the MRI came back negative.

Miami 41, Boston College 32: Turnovers, Poor Defense Doom Eagles

Imagine if I told you this two days ago: Boston College would pass for 441 yards, earn 29 first downs, score 32 points and would still lose. You probably would have called me crazy, right? Well that is exactly what happened today at Chestnut Hill as the Eagles dropped their opener to the Hurricanes 41-32 at Alumni Stadium.

Today, the new look Boston College offense showed that they have the ability to score and move the ball far more efficiently than they have since the days of Jeff Jagodzinski. The Eagles jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on a rumbling touchdown run by Andre Williams and a great dump down pass from Chase Rettig to Jake Sinkovec. They were almost unstoppable as they moved up and down the field, grabbing first downs with ease and shutting down the U. But Miami stormed back, running the ball down the Eagles throat, capped by a one yard run by Eduardo Clements, bring the Canes back to only a seven point deficit.

Chase Rettig not only looked like an ACC ready quarterback, he looked superb. Rettig threw for 441 yards and two touchdowns, making reads quickly, rolling out and hitting a bevy of his targets. Rettig looked calm, confident and accurate, with his only mistake being a pick six that occurred when Denzel Perryman caught him staring down a receiver at the end of the first quarter that tied the game.

MIami took the lead in the second quarter on a 52 yard run by Duke Johnson, who broke numerous tackles on his way to the end zone. BC tacked on Nate Freese field goals of 27, 30 and 37 yards to finally take the lead back in the third quarter.

But two brutal fourth quarter turnovers proved to be the final straw for the Eagles. Fumbles by Andre Williams and Tahj Kimble on consecutive drives gave Miami excellent field position and led to 10 Hurricane points that proved too big of a mountain for the Eagles to climb.

The Eagles mounted a comeback, led by a poised Chase Rettig, but it was not enough. The Eagles were stood up at the goal line on two consecutive plays, and Miami gave the Eagles a safety instead of punting it to end the game. Offensively the star of the game was Alex Amidon who recorded 10 catches for 150 yards, as well as Tahj Kimble who caught 8 balls for 130 yards.

BC's offense looked strong and first year OC Doug Martin proved that his game plan is exciting and finally the team will have an offense that can move the ball efficiently. There were a litany of problems though in terms of execution that caused the Eagles downfall.

First the defense struggled mightily. In terms of stats they allowed 208 yards on the ground, but just the eye test alone showed some troubling signs. The cushion Spaz usually has his corners give allowed Stephen Morris to hit his receivers on short slants and screens over and over again. Canes RB Mike James seemingly ran over defenders at will. Most of this was because BC's defensive front seven was getting completely blown off the ball.

Also if you watched the game, you probably saw BC turn the ball over. And if you didn't see Kimble or Williams fumble the ball, you probably saw a few key drops. The biggest drop was Brian Miller, who had a ball glance off his fingers in the end zone, leading to a BC field goal. Alex Amidon and Spiffy Evans also had numerous drops during the game. It could have just been opening game jitters, but they need to be more steady in the future.

Today the Eagles showed their fans a lot but also left many questions to be answered.

Can this defense improve so that they can defend against offenses that will be much more efficient than Miami? Will this offense continue to make careless turnovers? Will every game be a shoot out this season? This team is certainly going to be interesting, strap in folks it's going to be a wild ride.

Boston College Football's Scholarship Roster Heading Into 2012 Opener

With yesterday's discussion about the depth -- or lack thereof -- in the secondary following Al Louis-Jean's foot injury, I thought it'd be a good time to look at Boston College's 85-man scholarship roster. There have been fans that remain skeptical of Spaz's method of under recruiting, wanting the program to max out at 85 scholarships instead of banking a few as rewards for walk-ons and late recruiting.

This is unofficial, as Boston College doesn't release this information.

81 scholarship players sounds about right to me. Maybe that's 1-2 higher than reality, considering Spaz admitted that we were below the limit back in December, before Montel Harris was booted from the team and Momah lost his appeal with the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.
With both Marscovetra and Shinskie with only one year to go, it makes sense that the program is bringing in both Tim Boyle and Mackay Lowrie in the Class of 2013.
The offensive line is heavy on sophomores and freshmen. As a result, we may see smaller OL classes in 2013 and 2014. Of the 16 recruits in the current class, the Eagles have yet to land an offensive lineman.
With Murray, Quinn and Ramsey all seniors, you can see where there'll be a gap at the defensive tackle position in coming years. Harrison, Ohio DT Truman Gutapfel is currently the only player in the Class of 2013 recruited at DT.
Penn State players would not have counted against the NCAA max 85 scholarships, which makes the fact that BC didn't land any former Nittany Lion players that more disappointing considering the program is well under the 85-man cap.
Again, as a note this is an unofficial list. I figured we could crowd source this a bit so if you have any more information on this -- players that should be on the list or off it -- chime in in the comments section.

A final note: if 81 is the right number, here are some comparisons. That total is less than the 2011 Maryland roster, where the Terps were sanctioned down to 82 last season. North Carolina football's total scholarships will be reduced to 80 this season. USC's scholarships have been reduced to 75 this season.

An Early Look at 2012 Boston College Football: The Defense

It's never too soon to begin thinking about the 2012 Boston College football depth chart. Earlier this month, we took a look at the changes in offense. Today we look at the defense

-- The ACC grants medical hardship waivers to DT Kaleb Ramsey, DB C.J. Jones and LB Connor Wujciak. This gave Ramsey, Jones and Wujciak an extra year of eligibility.
-- LB Luke Kuechly declares for the NFL Draft as a junior
-- Junior DE Max Holloway also declares for the NFL Draft
-- CB Donnie Fletcher and LB Will Thompson are both out of eligibility

After factoring in all of the above, let's look at how the defense will be stacking up in 2012.

The Defense

2011 was a giant disappointment in terms of the development of the defense. For the first time in years, BC looked vulnerable, and had difficulties against all types of offenses. They looked completely lost against UCF, got trucked by FSU, and let Sean Renfree look like Case Keenum against them. There were lots of excuses that could be pointed to that led to their difficulties, biggest among them their inexperience. This year they grow one year older, but their is a huge gap this year as the best defensive player in the country Luke Kuechly is gone. How will the defense rebound?

Defensive Ends

Gone: Max Holloway

Returning: Kasim Edebali is the end with the most experience on team, playing every game last season while finishing last season with 27 tackles, and five pass break ups. Mehdi Abdesmad (3 games), Brian Mahilik (8 games) also have some game experience, though it may be limited.

Incoming: Malachi Moore

BC had all sorts of problems pressuring the quarterback last season finishing dead last in the country in sacks. Holloway was the co-leader with two, and now he is gone. Edebali had a solid 2011 season, but there is a lot of question marks lining up opposite him. Mahalik looked the strongest when healthy, but if any of these three get injured there isn't a whole lot of depth at defensive end.

Defensive Tackles

Gone: None

Returning: Kaleb Ramsey has to be the biggest addition to this defense going into 2012. Hampered by injuries in 2011, he was limited to one game before he was red shirted. He will be joined up front by Conor O'Neal, Jaryd Rudolph, Dillon Quinn, Max Ricci, Kieran Borcich and Dominic Appiah. Appiah appeared to have the strongest 2011 season, recording 36 tackles and 6.5 tackles for loss.

Incoming: None

BC has a strong core of defensive tackles with game experience that should provide an anchor for an improved defense. If Appiah and Ramsey can cause pressure on the quarterback and improve the run defense, it will improve the over all game of the linebackers and secondary. But that is a huge if.

Linebackers

Gone: Luke Kuechly

Returning: Kevin Pierre Louis will have to continue the legacy of great Boston College linebackers this year. Sean Duggan also showed that he can be an immediate impact contributor for the Eagles, finishing the season with 2 sacks and 39 tackles. Steele Divitto, Nick Clancy, Andre Lawrence, Josh Keyes all will be factors going into the next season. Jake Sinkovec is listed in the 2012 roster as a linebacker, but his role could be unclear.

Incoming: Steven Daniels, Tim Joy, Mike Strizak, and Bobby Wolford

There is loads of talent at linebacker for Boston College going into the 2012 season. But the biggest question remains, who will pick up the talent gap that Luke Kuechly left behind. KPL had a solid sophomore campaign, and Sean Duggan emerged as a name to watch, but Kuechly's shoes are not going to be easy to fill. Solid play by all members of this LB group will need to happen.

Secondary

Gone: Donnie Fletcher

Returning: Decimated by injuries in 2011, the Boston College secondary will have more immediate impact players returning to their roster. Dominique Williams, Jim Noel and C.J. Jones both missed portions of 2011, and their presence should add depth to a depleted unit. Al Louis Jean was an immediate contributor in his freshman campaign, but was prone to freshmen mistakes. Sean Sylvia, Manny Asprilla, Spencer Rositano, Hampton Hughes and Ted Davenport all saw playing time last season. Ameer Richardson and Joe Lacorte Jr. are also listed on the roster.

Incoming: David Dudeck, Justin Simmons and Bryce Jones

The secondary was a hot mess for most of 2011, getting absolutely torched by many of the quarterbacks they faced. They did seem to settle down near the end, but they are going to need to stay healthy if they want to improve in 2012.

An Early Look At 2012 Boston College Football: Offense

It's never too soon to begin thinking about the 2012 Boston College football depth chart. First, let's consider the various roster moves since the regular season finale against Miami.

-- The NCAA denies Ifeanyi Momah's request for a medical redshirt waiver and a sixth year of eligibility. NCAA, we aren't speaking anymore.
-- CB Donnie Fletcher, FB Dan Williams, P/K Ryan Quigley, LB Will Thompson, C Mark Spinney, OG Nathan Richman and TE Lars Anderson are all out of eligibility

After factoring in all of the above, let's look at how the offense breaks down for 2012.

The Offense

By now we all already know the drill, fourth offensive coordinator in three years. Doug Martin, former head coach at Kent State, and OC at New Mexico State University has a whole new slew of coaches to work with. Gone are Ryan Day, Dave Brock and Ben Sirmans who have been replaced by Aaron Smith and Sean Desai. BC's offense was atrocious in 2011, ranking 112th in scoring, 82nd in rushing offense, and 100th in passing. Even the stingiest pessimist can't imagine BC's offense could decline even further, especially with a healthy Montel Harris and a new offensive coordinator. However, how much improvement can be expected when coaching strategies continue to be in flux?

Quarterback

Gone: Nobody

Returning: Chase Rettig will once again be asked to run whatever offense Frank Spaziani throws at him this season. Last season Rettig made strides near the end of the year, but his body of work was not all that different than his freshman campaign. Josh Bordner, showed he can scramble, but his arm strength and accuracy remain a mystery. Christian Suntrup will be on the roster after We already know what we are getting from Dave Shinskie and Mike Marscovetra, and there is always Shane Cranmore.

Incoming: None

2012: Spaz has made it clear that the QB job is Chase Rettig's to lose. Will Doug Martin bring in a new playbook, and how will Rettig react? Will Bordner continue to be used like he was in 2011? If Rettig really struggles will Spaz turn the reigns over to Christian Suntrup?

Running Backs

Gone: Nobody

Returning: Montel Harris received an additional year of eligibility and will look to break the ACC's all time rushing record. Deuce Finch made a name for himself in 2011 rushing for 705 yards, but suffered from a case of the fumbles. Andre Williams was expected to be the go to running back last year, but really struggled shake tackles. Tahj Kimble also saw some action as a tailback. Jake Sinkovec who changed position from linebacker, is expected to return as the fullback

Incoming: None

2012: BC lives and dies by the running game, which means they are going to need a better year out of their running backs. A healthy Montel Harris could be a big difference maker for the Eagles, and BC will be trotting out one of the most talented stables of running backs in the ACC.

Wide Receivers

Gone: Ifeanyi Momah

Returning: Bobby Swigert was the go to wide receiver in 2011, as he led the Eagles with 44 receptions. Colin Larmond Jr. will be back for his senior season, and he hopes to be the deep threat BC desperately needs. Alex Amidon, Spiffy Evans, Donte Elliot and Jonathan Coleman will all also return.

Incoming: Marcus Grant, Harrison Jackson, and Karim Zoungrana

2012: The loss of Momah is tough, but Spaz did address the lack of depth here recruiting. Whether any of these guys can contribute in 2012 will be up in the air. The lack of a deep threat is scary, but if BC plans on doing lots of dink and dunks the guys they have should be sufficient.

Tight Ends

Gone: Lars Anderson

Returning: Chris Pantale is the only returning tight end with any playing experience. Pantale spent most of the season backing up Anderson, and in those situations he mainly was in to block. However Pantale exploded in the Miami game scoring two touchdowns. Brian Miller, Alex Foxen, Jarrett Darmstatter, Mike Naples are all expected to be on the roster.

Incoming: Dan Crimmins, Mike Giacone.

2012: It's going to be Pantale and a whole bunch of question marks. Doug Martin should utilize Pantale for more than just blocking, but that is all dependent on the efficiency of the offensive line. Who will step in to be the backup? My guess will be Brian Miller.

Offensive Line

Gone: Nathan Richman, Mark Spinney

Returning: In terms of players with experience the following will be returning: Bobby Vardaro, Emmett Cleary, John Wetzel, Seth Betancourt, Jaryd Rudolph, Harris Williams, Ian White and Bryan Davis. Phew that was a lot.

Incoming: Win Homer, Frank Taylor, and Jim Cashman

2012: Many adaptations, and with new offensive line coach Jim Bollman there are a lot of question marks going into the upcoming season. BC struggled mightily on the line last year, but had more success near the end of the season, will that continue in 2012?

Boston College Depth Chart For Duke Game: Part Deux

Yesterday, Boston College released its depth chart for Saturday's game against the Duke Blue Devils. That was before the Kevin Rogers news blew up all we knew and held sacred about this year's Eagles football program. Now our offensive coordinator is gone, and Spaz isn't done blowing things up.

This afternoon, Spaz released an updated depth chart with quite a few changes on it. On the offensive side of the ball, there is still no Montel Harris, which is no surprise. The first change is that Bobby Vardaro is no longer listed as the backup at left guard, replaced by true freshman Dan Lembke. I honestly don't know much about either of these guys, so not really a big deal. All in all, not many big changes on that side of the ball.

The defensive depth chart is a whole other story.

Kaleb Ramsey still isn't on the chart, which again will hurt BC in all facets of its defense on Saturday. Max Holloway isn't even on the depth chart anymore and has been replaced by true freshmen Mehdi Abdesmad and Kieran Borcich. At the SLB position Steele Divitto is gone, replaced by Nick Clancy and Andre Lawrence. Both of these moves puzzle me because they were both listed as starters yesterday, but now Divitto and Holloway are both off the depth chart completely. So unless they were both hurt at practice, there must be some other reason for their drop in status.

Everything else remains the same on special teams.

What the heck is going on in Chestnut Hill? Is Spaz shaking things up to try and breathe some life into a team that looked limp last week? Let's hope so.

Boston College Depth Chart For Duke Game

Boston College football has released its week 3 depth chart for the Duke game. Here are the highlights.

The Eagles' offensive line continues to be reworked with Mark Spinney now out. Nate Richman moves back to starting left guard, while redshirt freshman Aaron Kramer fills in behind Wetzel at backup left tackle. True freshman Dave Bowen cracks this week's two deep at backup right guard, replacing Eddie Meredith.

Of note, there's no more OR at the backup quarterback spot, with Marscovetra listed as this week's second string QB behind Rettig. Finally, there's still no sign of Montel as Andre Williams and Tahj Kimble are listed as the starting running backs.

On defense, junior Conor O'Neal replaces the injured Kaleb Ramsey at starting LT this week. Redshirt freshman Harris Williams slots in behind O'Neal. Sopomore Jaryd Rudolph replaces the injured Connor Wujciak at backup defensive end.

No changes in the linebacking corps, which has been one of the few bright spots on defense so far this season.

Finally, and most concerning, the Eagles again have a major shakeup in the secondary. SS Jim Noel has been moved back to starting BC to replace C.J. Jones, with redshirt freshman Dominique Williams replacing Noel as the starting strong safety. True freshman Spenser Rositano backs up Williams. For those keeping track at home, that leaves just one projected starting defensive back from the preseason depth chart, after the departures of Dominick LeGrande and Okechukwu Okoroha and C.J. Jones' season-ending injury.

Boston College Depth Chart For UCF Game

The week 2 depth chart is out and honestly there is not much new news. As expected, Jonathan Coleman will take the place for the injured Ifeanyi Momah. I like Coleman's potential, so it will be interesting to see how comfortable Rettig is with a new target.

On the defensive end, I was a little surprised Spaz didn't try to shake things up a little. BC had a difficult time getting pressure on the Northwestern QB until Mehdi Abdesmad and Connor Wujciak got into the game. I wonder if BC struggles defensively this weekend, Spaz will make some mid game switches to try to spark some life into that defense. Also Donnie Fletcher is still listed as a starter, so let's all cross our fingers that he will be ready to play.

Boston College Depth Chart For Northwestern Game

The year's first depth chart is out and the biggest surprise has to be that Dave Shinskie will be starting at QB. Just kidding. Definitely the biggest news on the chart is that Andre Williams will be playing and of course is listed as the starter at running back. Woohoo, let's not jump off the bridge yet. On the other hand Nathan Richman is out, and the magical carousel of offensive linemen will continue.

Secondly, Hampton Hughes will be starting at safety. Yes, the same Hampton Hughes who was just converted to the position less than a month ago. Playing against two all Big Ten WR's and Dan Persa. Suffice it to say, I am a little worried about the pass defense on Saturday. That being said, Donnie Fletcher -- who was held out of the scrimmage -- is back on the depth charge which is huge for the Eagles.

Also on the defensive end of the ball Steele Divitto ended up beating out Nick Clancy for the start SLB. Kaleb Ramsey will be ready to go after getting dinged up in fall practices. Also there are a ton of freshman and redshirted freshman set to play on defense. Spaz must be happy with some of his recent recruits progress to put them up there.

Also the wide receiver depth chart is different than usual. Last year, Tranquill would have a FB listed and two WR's on his depth chart. This year Kevin Rogers has three wide receivers listed as starters and no full back. Very strange. Will he be incorporating more 3 WR sets or dare I say some spread offense? This may just be a foreshadow into an offensive gameplan that is very foreign to BC fans who have watched the team recently.

11 for '11: Which Boston College Freshmen Will Immediately Contribute?

As fall camp is underway, this series explores 11 topics and themes related to the 2011 Boston College Eagles football season. Previously in this series we covered The Maturation of Chase Rettig, Consistency in the Secondary, Starting the Season Strong and The Health Of Montel Harris.

Don't look now the season is only 17 days away, so it's time to examine some of the freshmen class and see who could be an immediate contributor for Boston College. Each year it seems someone rises from the recruiting class and becomes a starter, or even better a star. Look at 2010, Kevin Pierre Louis was expected to be to be good, but did anyone think he would have finished second on the team in tackles? His contributions were invaluable to the team. Who will be this years Kevin Pierre Louis?

When thinking of immediate impact most fans would probably guess Al Louis Jean. The local boy, ex-Miami recruit comes in as Frank Spaziani's gem of the 2011 recruiting class With questions in the secondary, ALJ could immediately jump in opposite Donnie Fletcher, or come in as the nickleback in passing situations. ~~Okechukwu Okoroha~~ CJ Jones is projected as the CB2. The depth in secondary is thin, could ALJ see more playing time if god forbid there is an injury?

Another player that could be on the fast track to increased playing time on defense are linebacker Sean Duggan and defensive lineman Mehdi Abdesmad. Both players come in with the possibility to fill in an areas that are particularly thin. There are a lot of questions up front. Can Dillon Quinn be effective? Who is going to play if Max Holloway gets hurt? Abdesmad, from Canada, could be the guy that answers those questions. And in the LB corp, Duggan's name hasn't surfaced much, but if Steele Divitto and Jake Sinkovec can't cut it, we will hear more about Duggan as the year progresses.

Another name -- and by far the coolest on the team -- that might pop up is Spiffy Evans, a wide receiver from Florida. With Shakim Phillips and Clyde Lee gone, the depth chart at wide out shrunk by two and the two players that might benefit from it most are Hampton Hughes and Evans. Like the other positions, injuries are going to key and if a Bobby Swiggert or Alex Amidon go down, it most likely will be Evans who will play. And I hope he does, because I love the name Spiffy.

Finally, in a doom and gloom possibility there is another player that can help us and that is Christian Suntrup. We all hope that this year we use Dave Shinskie as a backup, Mike Marscovetra as an emergency and redshirt Suntrup. But what if god forbid Rettig falls on his face or misses a large chunk of the season due to injury? Would you really want to see the Dave Shinksie show again? Maybe, maybe not. What if Spaz sees something in Suntrup and decides he would make a better starter this year? Could happen.
