Boston College Football Depth Chart For Northwestern Game

The next Eagles football depth chart is out as of Monday, September 10, but I'm sure Spaz and the staff will change it up a few more times between now and game day. Let's get to it.

Quarterback:

Chase Rettig - JR

No change at QB this week. No surprise here.

Halfback:

Rolandan Finch - JR
Tahj Kimble - SO

Spaz continues to yo-yo in and out starting RBs. This week, it's Finch at RB1 and Kimble at RB2. Andre Williams is off this week's depth chart despite rushing for 61 yards on 11 carries in the win vs. Maine. Williams was also the only back to not put the ball on the turf last week. To be clear: I don't have a horse in this race, but I do think the backs would benefit from a little consistency in the starting lineup. Instead, it seems as though the RBs are forced to look over their shoulder in fear of getting benched after every costly fumble.

Wide Receivers:

Boston College Football Depth Chart For Maine Game

Boston College has released their second depth chart of the season, and look to rebound against Maine this week. There are a few changes on it, a few returning names, and obviously a joke by Spaz on special teams,

Quarterback:

Chase Rettig - JR
Josh Bordner - SO

After his historic performance last Saturday against Miami, Rettig will be looking to repeat his performance this week against the Maine Black Bears. Not going to mess with a good thing.

Halfback:

Andre Williams - JR
Tahj Kimble - SO

For the second straight week Rolandan Finch is missing from the depth chart, but against a team like Maine I am totally fine with that. Let him heal, and take his time resting his injury, don't risk him re-aggravating it in a mostly meaningless game. Hopefully Spaz uses Finch for 5-7 runs, and shelves him for the rest of the game. Kimble and Williams need to improve on their fumble filled, 2.8 yards per run average against Miami.

Wide Receivers:

Alex Amidon - JR
Harrison Jackson - FR

A few changes here to talk about. First, Colin Larmond Jr isn't listed after he suffered a leg injury during the first half of last weeks game. Like Finch, I hope Spaz rests him and doesn't risk Larmond hurting him self further. Not worth it against a team like Maine. To replace CLJ the Eagles will be starting Harrison Jackson, who caught many people's attention in summer scrimmages. Hopefully he will take advantage of his opportunity.

Tight End:

Glad to see that Brian Miller is healthy enough to be the starter, and hopefully he will improve over last week. That drop in the end zone still stings. Parsons played solid enough against Miami, and the duo should be fine against Maine.

The kickoff and punt returns last week were pretty awful last week, so it doesn't surprise me that Spiffy is getting the start at both. Like Kimble as the other kick returner as well, Spenser Rositano is off the list. Kicker and punter obviously remain the snap, as well as the starting snapper. Backup snapper is Dave Shinskie, wait WHAT?

Spaz changed things around, and you have to wonder how much of that was due to disappointing play, or how much was due to healthy players. Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Boston College Football Position Previews: Defensive Line

As we approach gameday, BC Interruption has been cranking out positional previews to help you get ready for the upcoming Boston College season. Earlier we covered the running backs, Chase Rettig and the quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers, and yesterday the much maligned offensive line. Today we switch over to the other side of the ball, and take a look at Boston College's defensive ends and tackles.

Last year Boston College struggled mightily rushing the passer. Much of this had to do with the play of the defensive line. Kaleb Ramsey was lost early to injury, and a group of young linemen failed to put much pressure on opposing quarterbacks. BC finished dead last in the country in total sacks. In an odd move, Max Holloway decided to declare for the NFL draft, and was subsequently not drafted, and BC did not add any depth recruiting over the winter and spring. Luckily this year, Ramsey is back, and players like Dominic Appiah and Connor Wujciak have stepped up.

In terms of defensive ends, Boston College has decent depth going into the 2012 season. Kasim Edebali will return for his junior season, after starting all 12 games in 2011 for the Eagles. He is a serviceable end, but nothing too special, racking up 13 solo tackles last season. What you see is what you get with Edebali, and I wouldn't expect him to be much of a pass rusher this season. Brian Mihalik on the other hand got his feet wet in his freshman year at the Heights. He has great size (6'8 285), and with some improved field awareness and coaching, he could be a good all around pass rusher. He showed that capability with one sack last year, against Clemson

BC has two good solid back ups to rotate in case of injury/ineffectiveness. Mehdi Abdesmad comes from Canada, and played a few snaps last year, but according to scouting reports the style difference between his high school up north and college football in the states varied greatly. He certainly has the tools to be effective, but it will take some solid coaching to get him where he needs to be. Connor Wujciak did not play last season, but might be a little undersized. Malachi Moore had a very strong summer, putting pressure on the offensive line, but was not located on the two deep going into week one.

In terms of tackles obviously captain Kaleb Ramsey will be the key to a resurgence on the defensive line. In 2010 a health Ramsey had 2.5 sacks on a defensive line that finished with 20 (they finished with 8 in 2011). Health is going to be key for Ramsey, as he has yet to put together a full season on the Heights. Dominic Appiah probably has the highest upside of anyone on the defensive line. Appiah recorded 36 tackles and one sack in his first season at BC. Between Ramsey and Appiah, BC's defensive line should drastically improve over last year and put less pressure on the linebackers to be the playmakers game in and game out.

In terms of BC's backups, Dillon Quinn is a run stopper in the truest sense. Quinn has been a starter for the past two years, but it appears that McGovern is going to change things up this year. I would expect Spaz to use him on rushing downs, and in the red zone. He is the largest defensive tackle by almost 20 pounds. Jaryd Rudolph made some poor decisions in the spring, but he has a solid upside. He played in seven games in 2011, only recording 4 tackles. Bryan Murray is also available but sits deep on the depth chart.

One of the best way to move on from Luke Kuechly this year will need to be improved play by the defensive line. Recording less than one sack a game is no way to beat teams with solid quarterbacks like Clemson, Florida State or even Wake Forest. BC may not have the depth, but they certainly have a good core of players to make this happen.

Boston College Football Depth Chart For Miami Game: Deuce Finch Missing, Spiffy To Start

Boston College football released its depth chart for their opener against Miami. And like always, Frank Spaziani and the coaching staff make some interesting decisions.

Quarterback:

No big surprises there. Rettig has been the starter since day 1. Interesting that Spaz didn't do the Josh Bordner or Dave Shinskie at QB2 that he did for most of last season. Also will Bordner get a few snaps in an option formation?

Halfback:

Where is Deuce Finch? I know he is banged up, but not seeing him on the two deep puts me in full panic mode. Assume he will be the starter come Monday, but might be sitting out a few practices to rest up. Williams and Kimble are fine, just need them to stay healthy.

Dan Crimmins? Doug Martin really must want that TE/WR hybrid out there, and without Brian Miller, Crimmins must be the answer. And no Harrison Jackson? He must have a bigger upside than Donte Elliott.

After a very strong summer Nick Clancy gets the nod at MLB. After all the talk this summer, I am surprised that Steven Daniels didn't make it on the two deep. Sean Duggan is up there, and with KPL playing dinged up most of the summer, you have to expect SD will get some reps during the game so I am not too worried that Duggan is only listed as a backup. Bravo to Tim Joy for making it on the two deep his first game on the Heights.

Boston College Football's Scholarship Roster Heading Into 2012 Opener

With yesterday's discussion about the depth -- or lack thereof -- in the secondary following Al Louis-Jean's foot injury, I thought it'd be a good time to look at Boston College's 85-man scholarship roster. There have been fans that remain skeptical of Spaz's method of under recruiting, wanting the program to max out at 85 scholarships instead of banking a few as rewards for walk-ons and late recruiting.

81 scholarship players sounds about right to me. Maybe that's 1-2 higher than reality, considering Spaz admitted that we were below the limit back in December, before Montel Harris was booted from the team and Momah lost his appeal with the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.
With both Marscovetra and Shinskie with only one year to go, it makes sense that the program is bringing in both Tim Boyle and Mackay Lowrie in the Class of 2013.
The offensive line is heavy on sophomores and freshmen. As a result, we may see smaller OL classes in 2013 and 2014. Of the 16 recruits in the current class, the Eagles have yet to land an offensive lineman.
With Murray, Quinn and Ramsey all seniors, you can see where there'll be a gap at the defensive tackle position in coming years. Harrison, Ohio DT Truman Gutapfel is currently the only player in the Class of 2013 recruited at DT.
Penn State players would not have counted against the NCAA max 85 scholarships, which makes the fact that BC didn't land any former Nittany Lion players that more disappointing considering the program is well under the 85-man cap.
Again, as a note this is an unofficial list. I figured we could crowd source this a bit so if you have any more information on this -- players that should be on the list or off it -- chime in in the comments section.

A final note: if 81 is the right number, here are some comparisons. That total is less than the 2011 Maryland roster, where the Terps were sanctioned down to 82 last season. North Carolina football's total scholarships will be reduced to 80 this season. USC's scholarships have been reduced to 75 this season.

2012 Boston College Football Preview: Defensive MVP

Yesterday we took a look at the offensive players that could become the most valuable player for the Eagles. Today we take a look at defense. Luke Kuechly is gone, and that means there are Paul Bunyon sized shoes to fill this year. Who will be take the reigns of the defense and make the big plays? Will it be a defensive lineman like Kaleb Ramsey or Dominic Appiah? Or will it be another linebacker such as Steele Divitto, Kevin Pierre Louis or Sean Duggan?

Let's take a look at the suspects:

Kevin Pierre-Louis (LB) Even with injuries that caused him to miss three games last year, he still finished second on the team in tackles. He makes the instinctual plays that you would expect from BC linebackers, and without Kuechly there, most experts predict he will be the heir apparent. But will he stay healthy enough to be that rock?

Brian Mihalik (DE) During the 2011 freshman Appiah stepped up to earn the starting role due to his physical play and ability to get into the backfield. With a whole season under his belt, it may be up to him to get pressure on the quarterback. Could he be the pressuring defensive lineman BC has sorely lacked recently?

Jim Noel (Safety) BC's secondary was very inconsistent in 2011, and it will be up to the captain and senior leader Jim Noel to provide some stability in the backfield. Injuries limited him to nine games in '11, but he looks to turn it around this year and be the physical presence in the back end.

Sean Duggan (LB) Last season we saw just a glimpse of what could be with Duggan. As a freshman Duggan was seventh on the team in tackles, only playing in nine games. Smart and intuitive, it could be Duggan that becomes the next dominant linebacker for the Eagles.

Kaleb Ramsey (DL) The most seasoned of anyone on the defensive line, Ramsey missed all of 2011 due to injury. But he is back, and was named one of the captains this past week. He can be disruptive in the backfield, but will need to stay healthy.

Steele Divitto (LB) The man with the greatest name on the Eagles (Spiffy Evans is a close 2nd) had a fantastic 2011, and is posed to continue his success in 2012. He finished last season with 72 tackles, third best on the team, and had one interception.

Other Is there a player not named that could lead the BC Eagles on defense? Maybe a player in the secondary like Al Louis Jean or Dominique Williams. Or could it be a defensive lineman such as Dominic Appiah or Kasim Edebali. Or maybe a rookie such as Steven Daniels?

Boston College Football: Post-Spring Depth Chart Released

Over the weekend, Boston College updated its depth chart as the program heads into preseason camp. Here are the changes comparing this depth chart to the one released for the spring game. Note: This is bound to change a few times between now and September 3.

Offensive Line. Ian White has been moved from starting right guard to center, ahead of Andy Gallik. Harris Williams is listed as the starter at RG with redshirt freshman Liam Porter listed behind Williams. Seth Betancourt is replaced by redshirt freshman Dave Bowen at RT behind John Wetzel. Bryan Davis and Seth Betancourt are no longer listed on the two-deep. Interestingly, Cleary added 13 pounds.

Receivers. The pairings have been shifted around. Spiffy Evans and Brian Miller are replaced by Alex Amidon and Bobby Swigert. The WRs are now paired as follows: Amidon-Coleman, Swigert-Miller and Larmond Jr.-Evans. Swigert is back on the two-deep, replacing Zoungrana.

Defensive Line. Dominic Appiah moves from starting RT to backup LT, replaced by Dillon Quinn. Max Ricci and Connor Wujciak are backing up Quinn at RT. Wujciak was moved from backup end to tackle and is replaced by Abdesmad at right end.

Linebackers. Divitto apparently bulked up a bit, adding 12 pounds. He's now listed at 238.

Defensive Backs. C.J. Jones replaces Zach Wolfe at field corner. There's an OR next to Jones and ALJ at field corner. Will be an interesting position battle to watch. Noel is now listed as the starting strong safety, with both Rositano and Dominique Williams listed behind him. At back corner, Manuel Asprilla replaces James McCaffrey at the top spot, bumping redshirt freshman Ameer Richardson.

Specialists. Mike Naples replaces KPL as the backup long snapper -- thank you! -- though ALJ is still listed as one of the kick returners -- Bad Spaz, bad!

ESPN Believes Boston College Football Could Turn It Around In 2012

It's Heather Dinich day here at BC Interruption today. Our favorite ESPN personality posted a list yesterday of team's that could turn it around in 2012. Number one on that list was Wake Forest, whom HD predicts will continue their improvements after a surprising 2011. Second on that list? Boston College.

2. Boston College: The Eagles could be one of the surprise teams in the ACC in 2012. Last year's roster was filled with underclassmen, including quarterback Chase Rettig. The running back position has enough depth even without Montel Harris, and first-year coordinator Doug Martin said the offensive line should be one of the team's most improved groups. The receivers remain a question. The defense -- and entire team -- will miss linebacker Luke Kuechly, but with 16 starters back, including seven on defense, the Eagles should be able to still show improvement.

It's not going to be hard to show some improvement over 2011, because last year was a very difficult season to watch.

On the offensive side of the ball HD is very quick to accept Doug Martin's assurance that the offensive line will improve, but for most of us watching the game, that has to be the key to this season. If Chase Rettig spends most of the year on the run, and can never find a rhythm because opposing D's are shredding the line, then it's hard to see how the offense will improve over last year's paltry production.

On defense the loss of Luke Kuechly seems understated. They just lost arguably the best defender to ever play at the Heights, that is a huge hole to fill. Just because BC has a bunch of returners coming back doesn't automatically mean they are going to improve, especially with the loss of Kuechly. That being said there is talent there may fill Kuechly's void, and if there is any position that could play strong this year my guess is it will be the linebackers. My biggest question going into this season, and it's something that hasn't been answered yet is whether or not the defensive line and secondary play will improve. Last in the nation in sacks, and allowing about 250 yards a game isn't going to win games. Dominic Appiah, Kaleb Ramsey and someone/anyone in the secondary is going to need to step up to solidify those positions.

NCAA Football 13: Boston College Player Ratings

One of the joys of the summer is the release of EA Sports' NCAA Football series. If you are like me, you head to your local video game store the day of the release, buy the game and crank out the most unrealistic Boston College team you could imagine. Top ranked recruits, BCS bowls, breaking single season records. I've done them all with the Eagles.

In years past the Eagles have had players ranked relatively high and given gamers some star power to take over games. Luke Kuechly, Mark Herzlich and Montel Harris all have had very high ratings in the past. But what about this year? Let's look at the overall ratings.

Another First-Rounder On The Roster? And The Big Finish

Brian: On Thursday, Luke Kuechly became the fifth Boston College player drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft in the last five years, joining former Eagles Anthony Castonzo (2011), B.J. Raji (2010), Matt Ryan (2008) and Gosder Cherilus (2008). He is the 10th Eagle selected over the last 13 years to get drafted in the first round -- a remarkable run for a non-traditional college football power -- and 19th overall. Kuechly joins such names as Mathias Kiwanuka (2006), William Green (2002), Marc Colombo (2002), Chris Hovan (2000), Damien Woody (1999), Pete Kendall (1996) and Mike Mamula (1995).

ATL recently profiled four guys that he thinks could be future first round NFL Draft talent, including Kevin Pierre-Louis, Kaleb Ramsey, Dominic Appiah and Chase Rettig? Any additions to this list, and which player, if any, on the current roster becomes the next first rounder out of Boston College?

Jeff: I think right now you have to look at the LBs first as potential future first rounders in the NFL. KPL is the obvious first person you look at but then a few years down the road look at maybe a Steele Divitto or Nick Lifka who we really don't know much about. Having Kuechly be successful for the Panthers can certainly help future BC guys from that unit. Of the seniors this season or juniors that might jump early, it is a long shot at best anyone goes first round. But if we are making a list, I think you have to look at Chris Pantale. If he could have a huge season, he has to be as close to an elite player at his position as anyone else on the team and he has the right size body for the NFL, he just might not have the speed they are now looking for to go along with that size.

At the RB position we have talent, but with Montel Harris's injury concerns and the hesitation of NFL teams to reach for someone in the draft at the RB position, it might be a long time until BC has another RB drafted in the first round even though LB and RB were probably the only two positions that BC was better at last year and figures to be again next year relative to the level of talent BC has had at those positions historically.

Big Finish

Brian: To me, it's interesting we aren't talking about O-Linemen getting drafted in future first rounds. Are you concerned at all about the depth on the OL going forward?

Jeff: Yes, this is an issue we have discussed before.

Jeff: BC has been really impressive the last ten years in the first round of the draft, but not so much in the draft overall. What does that tell us?

Brian: Two things. The level of talent has decreased and the number of college football programs has increased.

Brian: BC held a draft night on Thursday that drew 100 Flynn Fund donors and fans. Good idea?

Jeff: Excellent idea. The Flynn Fund should keep being creative and see what works.

Jeff: Is Chris Kreider the best thing to happen in New York this season since Jeremy Lin?

Brian: Tim Tebow begs to differ.

Brian: Lots of fans were upset about Spaz joking about his bedtime. Were you?

Jeff: This genuinely does not bother me. It's who Spaz is.

Jeff: The baseball team is right in the mix for a spot in the ACC tournament after a weekend sweep of Wake Forest. Series with UNC and last place Duke remain on their schedule. Will the Eagles qualify?

Brian: I'm going to say no. Baseball has been terrible on the road and the next three are in Chapel Hill.

Brian: Last one. Another former BC backer, Mark Herzlich, thinks the Giants starting LB job can be his. Do you?

Jeff: It's so hard to say. His level of play with the Giants this season was so much better than it was in the beginning of the 2010 season that it is certainly possible.
