Updated Boston College Football Depth Chart For Northwestern Game

The program has released an updated depth chart for Saturday's game in Evanston.

The million dollar question, as always, is who is Boston College's starting running back this weekend. That answer has changed once again with Andre Williams returning to the two-deep alongside Rolandan Finch. Sophomore Tahj Kimble backs up Williams / Finch.

James McCaffrey has been added to the depth chart this week at backup wide receiver, along with senior Donte Elliott. Both McCaffrey and Elliott are listed behind Spiffy Evans.

On defense, sophomore defensive end Mehdi Abdesmad has jumped Brian Mihalik for the starting defensive end spot. Abdesmad looked good in the win over Maine. Is this Spaz / McGovern mixing things up on the line to figure out the most effective starting lineup up front?

In the secondary, C.J. Jones has won back the starting BC job over Ameer Richardson while freshman Justin Simmons has earned the backup SS job over Spenser Rositano. As for Rositano, he's been moved from backup SS to starting FS, bumping fellow sophomore Sean Sylvia. Both Dominique Williams and Josh Keyes are off the two-deep this week.

On special teams, Donte Elliott is no longer listed as the backup punt return man, replaced by James McCaffrey.

Dave Shinskie? Still backup long snapper.

Boston College Football Depth Chart For Northwestern Game

The next Eagles football depth chart is out as of Monday, September 10, but I'm sure Spaz and the staff will change it up a few more times between now and game day. Let's get to it.

Quarterback:

No change at QB this week. No surprise here.

Halfback:

Spaz continues to yo-yo in and out starting RBs. This week, it's Finch at RB1 and Kimble at RB2. Andre Williams is off this week's depth chart despite rushing for 61 yards on 11 carries in the win vs. Maine. Williams was also the only back to not put the ball on the turf last week. To be clear: I don't have a horse in this race, but I do think the backs would benefit from a little consistency in the starting lineup. Instead, it seems as though the RBs are forced to look over their shoulder in fear of getting benched after every costly fumble.

Wide Receivers:

Boston College Football Depth Chart For Maine Game

Boston College has released their second depth chart of the season, and look to rebound against Maine this week. There are a few changes on it, a few returning names, and obviously a joke by Spaz on special teams,

Quarterback:

Chase Rettig - JR
Josh Bordner - SO

After his historic performance last Saturday against Miami, Rettig will be looking to repeat his performance this week against the Maine Black Bears. Not going to mess with a good thing.

Halfback:

Andre Williams - JR
Tahj Kimble - SO

For the second straight week Rolandan Finch is missing from the depth chart, but against a team like Maine I am totally fine with that. Let him heal, and take his time resting his injury, don't risk him re-aggravating it in a mostly meaningless game. Hopefully Spaz uses Finch for 5-7 runs, and shelves him for the rest of the game. Kimble and Williams need to improve on their fumble filled, 2.8 yards per run average against Miami.

Wide Receivers:

Alex Amidon - JR

A few changes here to talk about. First, Colin Larmond Jr isn't listed after he suffered a leg injury during the first half of last weeks game. Like Finch, I hope Spaz rests him and doesn't risk Larmond hurting him self further. Not worth it against a team like Maine. To replace CLJ the Eagles will be starting Harrison Jackson, who caught many people's attention in summer scrimmages. Hopefully he will take advantage of his opportunity.

Tight End:

Glad to see that Brian Miller is healthy enough to be the starter, and hopefully he will improve over last week. That drop in the end zone still stings. Parsons played solid enough against Miami, and the duo should be fine against Maine.

The kickoff and punt returns last week were pretty awful last week, so it doesn't surprise me that Spiffy is getting the start at both. Like Kimble as the other kick returner as well, Spenser Rositano is off the list. Kicker and punter obviously remain the snap, as well as the starting snapper. Backup snapper is Dave Shinskie, wait WHAT?

Spaz changed things around, and you have to wonder how much of that was due to disappointing play, or how much was due to healthy players. Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Boston College Position Previews: Defensive Backs

As we approach gameday, BC Interruption has been cranking out positional previews to help you get ready for the upcoming Boston College season. Earlier we covered the running backs, Chase Rettig and the quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers, offensive line, defensive line and yesterday the linebackers.

As we finish our look ahead, it's time to look at arguably one of Boston College's weakest areas, the secondary. Last year Boston College's passing defense was ranked 81st in the country, allowing 243.4 yards per game which was showcased in the Duke game when Sean Renfree threw for 384 yards against the Eagles. Much has been made on the blogs about the "Spaz cushion", where cornerbacks "give" wide receivers a seven-eight yard cushion, which many believe is the root of BC's defensive woes. I tend to disagree. With the right group up front, providing pressure, Spaz's cushion could in fact make a less talented group even more effective. Instead of getting torched by faster receivers, BC's corners have room to make a move on the ball, but they need the front seven to hurry the QB. That did not happen last year, and BC's secondary was exposed and played poorly.

Already depth has not been kind to the BC secondary in 2012. The Eagles are already starting off with three players either dinged up or out. Al Louis Jean, who was projected to be one of the starting corners, broke his foot during the summer and is expected to be out until at least October. Also on the list of walking wounded are Dominique Williams and C.J. Jones who both also missed most, or if not all of 2011 with injuries. Will they be playing soon? Due to their prior history a healthy skepticism about the contributions of any of these three has to be warranted at this point.

In terms of corners because of after ALJ there is only a pile of unproven underclassmen. Just look at the depth chart for Game 1 against Miami. The four players include Manny Asprilla, Bryce Jones, Sean Sylvia and Ameer Richardson who have played a combined 8 games at the corner. Jones and Richardson are unproven freshman, and Sylvia moved to corner after playing FS for most of 2012. Certainly the corners are a position of worry, and will be tested early and often by opposing offenses.

Jim Noel is most reliable defensive back for the Eagles. Not known as a ball hawk, Noel provides a physical presence in the secondary. He is also the lone upperclassmen in this group. Spenser Rositano played a solid strong safety in 2011, gaining the starting job after an injury to Noel. Both of these safeties are going to need to really step up and support the corners, because the Eagles lack a shutdown corner this year that could cover a star receiver one to one.

In terms of backups BC is bringing in Justin Simmons, who played both wide receiver and safety in high school, and Josh Keyes a heavy hitting converted linebacker. Of course both are unproven commodities at this point. Zach Wolfe and possibly Ted Davenport are the only other secondary players left on the roster.

Injuries have already taken a number on the secondary, but a few more injuries and BC will be scrambling to find someone to play corner and safety. During the spring game it got so bad that Spaz was playing walk on quarterback Shane Cranmore and a backup kicker in the secondary. Hopefully things won't get that bad for the Eagles this year, but injuries and poor recruiting have left BC in a precarious situation in the secondary. Cross your fingers things get better before they get worse.

Boston College Football Depth Chart For Miami Game: Deuce Finch Missing, Spiffy To Start

Boston College football released its depth chart for their opener against Miami. And like always, Frank Spaziani and the coaching staff make some interesting decisions.

Quarterback:

No big surprises there. Rettig has been the starter since day 1. Interesting that Spaz didn't do the Josh Bordner or Dave Shinskie at QB2 that he did for most of last season. Also will Bordner get a few snaps in an option formation?

Halfback:

Tahj Kimble - SO

Where is Deuce Finch? I know he is banged up, but not seeing him on the two deep puts me in full panic mode. Assume he will be the starter come Monday, but might be sitting out a few practices to rest up. Williams and Kimble are fine, just need them to stay healthy.

Dan Crimmins? Doug Martin really must want that TE/WR hybrid out there, and without Brian Miller, Crimmins must be the answer. And no Harrison Jackson? He must have a bigger upside than Donte Elliott.

Sean Duggan is up there, and with KPL playing dinged up most of the summer, you have to expect SD will get some reps during the game so I am not too worried that Duggan is only listed as a backup. Bravo to Tim Joy for making it on the two deep his first game on the Heights.

Boston College: Justin Simmons, DB. Defensive back is an area where Boston College needs help, especially after the loss of Al Louis-Jean, who's out six to eight weeks with a foot injury. Simmons already has made his presence felt. In a scrimmage last weekend, he had two interceptions. Also watch for defensive back Bryce Jones and linebacker Steven Daniels.

Boston College awarded scholarships to RBs Mike Javorski and Ted Davenport. Javorski, a senior, played in three games last season after spending two years on the scout team. He had two rushes for one yard. Davenport played in four games last season as a redshirt freshman as a DB. Javorski and Davenport each had five carries in Boston College's scrimmage Wednesday.

But the key issue will be to get the people back in the stands. If the BC football team can turn 4-8 into 8-4 (and yes that is possible) then Coach Frank Spaziani should get a lot of coach of the year support and the program can move back into the good graces of the fans, which might bring them back into the mix.

Boston College Football Scrimmage Notes: Levano, Amidon Shine, Interceptions Galore

The Eagles were busy with their third scrimmage of the summer on Sunday, completing a situational practice. A situational practice, you ask? A situational practice.

The scrimmage featured six game-simulated end-of-half/fourth-quarter situations in which the offense and defense squared off with limited time on the clock as well as a limited number of timeouts.

Chase Rettig threw 18 of 32 for 168 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Josh Bordner struggled as well, going 6 for 9 for 55 yards and two interceptions including one by true freshman Justin Simmons. Alex Amidon was the favorite target of Rettig, racking up big gains including a 29 yard TD pass. Four tight ends played in the game -- C.J Parsons, Jarrett Darmstatter, Dan Crimmins and Brian Miller -- each recording at least one reception.

Evidently Spaziani was more cautious with his running backs during the scrimmage, as neither Andre Williams nor Tahj Kimble played. Instead Ted Davenport and Mike Javorski got most of the runs. Interestingly, Davenport was a defensive back last year for the Eagles. Honestly at this point I would rather see practice squad players in these situations rather than risking losing another halfback before the season starts.

Punter Gerald Levano had a strong scrimmage, punting the ball three times for distances of 43, 47 and 60 yards. He has big shoes to fill after the graduation of Ryan Quigley, who did a fantastic job last year for the Eagles. Nate Freese hit one field goal from 40 yards. On defense, Manny Asprilla and Nick Clancy recorded interceptions and Mehdi Abdesmad made a swat leading to the second INT.

Luckily the Eagles left the practice without yet another foot injury. 12 days until kickoff.

Boston College Football's Scholarship Roster Heading Into 2012 Opener

With yesterday's discussion about the depth -- or lack thereof -- in the secondary following Al Louis-Jean's foot injury, I thought it'd be a good time to look at Boston College's 85-man scholarship roster. There have been fans that remain skeptical of Spaz's method of under recruiting, wanting the program to max out at 85 scholarships instead of banking a few as rewards for walk-ons and late recruiting.

This is unofficial, as Boston College doesn't release this information.

81 scholarship players sounds about right to me. Maybe that's 1-2 higher than reality, considering Spaz admitted that we were below the limit back in December, before Montel Harris was booted from the team and Momah lost his appeal with the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.
With both Marscovetra and Shinskie with only one year to go, it makes sense that the program is bringing in both Tim Boyle and Mackay Lowrie in the Class of 2013.
The offensive line is heavy on sophomores and freshmen. As a result, we may see smaller OL classes in 2013 and 2014. Of the 16 recruits in the current class, the Eagles have yet to land an offensive lineman.
With Murray, Quinn and Ramsey all seniors, you can see where there'll be a gap at the defensive tackle position in coming years. Harrison, Ohio DT Truman Gutapfel is currently the only player in the Class of 2013 recruited at DT.
Penn State players would not have counted against the NCAA max 85 scholarships, which makes the fact that BC didn't land any former Nittany Lion players that more disappointing considering the program is well under the 85-man cap.

A final note: if 81 is the right number, here are some comparisons. That total is less than the 2011 Maryland roster, where the Terps were sanctioned down to 82 last season. North Carolina football's total scholarships will be reduced to 80 this season. USC's scholarships have been reduced to 75 this season.
