The linebacking and cornerback spots are the class of the defense. The Buffs will have solid depth for many years at linebacker, assuming Jon Major recovers from his ACL injury and Doug Rippy continues to develop. I would expect the Buffs to take a couple more 'backers in the 2010 class to keep the continuity going. The linebacking depth is exactly what you want as a coach when you look at your group of players; a great mix of experience as well as young talent who are pushing the veterans. As for cornerback, the next two years look very solid as long as Jimmy Smith doesn't jump for the NFL early. I think he is still in need of all four years of college but if he has the year that I expect him to have, he may be tempted by the NFL scouts who would be drooling over a sub 4.5, 6'3" physical cornerback. After the next two years, the Buffs will need to get help at corner as you will be looking at all new starters after 2010 with not much known about the players behind the juniors and seniors.

The rest of the defensive positions, youth prevails. There are only three scholarship upperclassmen at defensive line and safety. The Buffs are young at safety with potential starters Patrick Mahnke and Anthony Perkins both sophomores but they gained valuable experience as freshmen. Defensive line continues to be the main question mark on the defense mostly because we don't know what we are going to get from the underclassmen, who will be forced to play this year. Guys like Eugene Goree, Conrad Obi, Lagrone Shields, Curtis Cunningham, Nick Kasa, Edward Nuckols, Nate Bonsu, Will Pericak, Lagrone Sheilds, etc. haven't showed us a lot because they are all first or second year players. They might be great but the doubt surrouding them is one reasons many Buff fans wonder if the team will turn the corner and get to that 8+ win mark.

On special teams, the Buffs had to take a kicker in the 2009 class in Zach Grossnickle after the dismal performance last year. Grossnickle (both a placekicker and punter) may technically be the only punter on the team after this season with starter Matt DiLallo graduating. Special teams is another part of the equation that most Buff fans forget about but shouldn't in evaluating the possible success next year. You name it, it went wrong in 2008 so improved play is a must.

Right along side passes getting batted down at the line of scrimmage or a lack of quarterback pressures from the defense, the kicking game was near the top of the list in fan dissapointments last year. I try to be very even keel about what I write regarding the Buffs and try to see the positives in things but this is not one of them: special teams was a joke last year. Never in my short adult life has their been so much discussion about the recruitment of a kicker as this past cycle. It was easy to tell on our site that the fans had enough of "he hit the upright" or "he barely missed it." Hopefully, Aric Goodman will bounce back this year and prove us all wrong but Hawkins granting of a scholarship after three games into the season was premature to put it kindly. With the addition of Denver East H.S. kicker/punter, Zach Grossnickle, the Buffs now have four kickers/punters on scholarship (a big number) with the only 2009 senior being probable starting punter, Matt DiLallo. Colorado could end up being in a similar spot next recruiting cycle if Grossnickle doesn't answer the bell showing that he can handle the punting duties as Jameson Davis and Aric Goodman seem to handle the other areas of the kicking game (Davis is listed as a punter as well, I have not seen any evidence that he will be punting in the future, he might be able to handle it). Jameson Davis is also coming off knee surgery and will be out for spring practice, another concern if Davis can fully recover as knee problems have hampered him in the past as well.

In case you don't remember how bad special teams were last year, specifically around the kicking game, here is a nice chart that will get you boiled up again:

This was only updated through the Iowa State game and only shows points as a direct result of inadequate special teams play. It does not factor in loss of momentum (take the Florida State game for example and figure if we don't shoot ourselves in the foot on special teams and make a few completions for touchdowns, we are probably routing FSU):

-8.1

Yes, up to the Iowa State game, the Buffs special teams was giving up at least 8.1ppg to the opposition. This analysis was sparked by the horrible performance against Iowa State with missed field goals, muffed punts and a plethora of roughing the punter penalties. Of course, KR/PR Josh Smith had some good returns and was a direct result of Buff touchdowns but he was no where near 81 points to offset the mistakes made by the special teams. Their will be a hard eye on Kent Riddle and the special team's unit this year.

Of course, practice isn't the problem as Aric Goodman once upon a time earned the nickname "money" because of his near perfection in practice, so we might not get a great idea of future performance in spring ball this offseason. That being said, eyes will be on Goodman and the coaching staff to create pressure filled situations and really challenge him. It will also be interesting to see where Goodman's confidence is during spring ball. With all of the talk last year about his ineffectiveness and the recruitment of a new kicker as a direct result of his poor play, I wonder if he will be the same practice perfomer as in 2008.

The real evaluation will begin when true freshman Zach Grossnickle comes to town for fall ball. It is a ton of pressure for him as a freshman but if he is able to step in and take a starting role as either the punter or the kicker right away, it would be a step in the right direction. Either way, whether it is the true freshman or Goodman, we will have to go through another year of tense kicking situations where no field goal, regardless of distance, is a gimme.

Some other things that need to be corrected this offseason in the special team's game is around Josh Smith. I was a big supporter last year of Smith (very unpopular at certain times) as I felt their were a couple of games (Colorado State, Eastern Washington, Kansas to name a few) that he single handidly kept Colorado in the game. I also felt that he was one of two playmakers this team had on offense and he needed to play more. Of course, later in the year it became known that Smith was injured most of the season (shoulders) and he didn't have a firm grasp of the offense to be trusted. Smith statistics are unquestioned on the special teams side, as he ranked third in the Big 12 in all-purpose yards. That being said, he also proved to be a liability at times. I partially blame Smith but the other half has to go to Riddle and the coaching staff. When does it become enough when Smith disregards catching the ball inside the 10, calling for a fair catch, muffing the ball that you pull him and send the message that he needs to be more aware on the field? To see him catch the ball over and over inside the ten and field kicks he shouldn't have made you wonder what he was being coached? We saw he was disciplined on offense last year by not playing but no such ramifications on special teams. Yes, he is a great asset but he ended up hurting the team in situations. Every game was the same story where you would sit their and say, "he did that last week too."

If the Buffs are going to be successful this year, two things must happen that directly relate to special teams. Colorado cannot make only one out of every three field goals and Josh Smith needs to be a big time player both on special teams and offense. I guarantee the offense will be exponentially better if both Markques Simas and Smith learn the offense, watch film, dedicate themselves in practice and mature. They have the ability to be a top three wide receiving core in the Big 12 and Smith has the ability to be the #1 all purpose performer in the conference. It's now up to them if they want to realize those goals.

One thing is for sure...you can't give up 81 points on special teams again.

Cliche statement: In football, injuries are a part of the game, you need to have the depth to survive.

Well, that blanket statement doesn't apply to the Buffs as they lost about 120 player games to injury in 2008 made up of starters and important reserves like TE Riar Geer, OL Ryan Miller, OL Max Tuioti-Mariner, RB Darrell Scott, DE Jason Brace, DB Daniel Dykes and DB Ryan Walters just to name a few. And as for that depth part of the statement, in most cases it consisted of first or second year players who weren't ready physically, mentally or experience wise. It was a perfect storm. Still, it is a tough subject for Buffalo fans (I know it gets me a little irked) as it led to another excuse from winning enough games to qualify for a bowl and enough to formulate an excuse/reason to go winless on the road and enough to still have questions coming into 2009.

Offseason surgeries, recovering from ACL injuries last year and a new injury to OG Max Tuioti-Mariner will have an impact on spring practices. The 2009 spring session definitely has a stronger sense of importance than in prior years because the Buffs are, once again, trying to learn a new offense, replace 3/4 of a defensive line and still develop young talent. There is also a heightened sense of pressure this year on the Hawkins regime to produce on the field results. No, that's not the blog world putting false goals on this team. To Dan Hawkins credit, he realizes it with his statement that he believes the Buffs can win 10 games. Yes, it was not a guarantee, but you don't make a statement like that, four victories over any total he has produced yet, if you don't realize that their is an anxious feeling around the program. But a big key to fulfilling his statement and getting to the eight win mark (we would settle on that, Dan) are keeping injuries to a minimum this year as well as praying for a full recovery for last year's walking wounded. When you lose starters like CU did last year, you always have to worry about how they will return to form.

Here is the list of players (please switch your view to wide in the top left hand side of the blog to see the chart correctly) that had injuries in 2008 or in the offseason and their status this spring. I have added production numbers from last year. (source: Dave Plati and the Sports Information Department):

20 players! Almost one fourth of the team is on this list and when you have a fourth of the team mentioned, there are going to be many players that played a big part or were expected to play a big part in last year's team as well as the 2009 team. So the million dollar question is how will each of these players recover and perform coming off of some pretty serious injuries? The tough news is that only eight of the wounded will be full go come spring practice so getting a gauge on most of the lot will not happen until fall ball.

Still, three players catch my eye as guys that will receive a ton of attention this spring and will have the most questions surrounding their performance: starting RT Ryan Miller, starting RB Rodney Stewart and potential star WR Markques Simas. All three will be in "full go" mode and all three might be the best player in their respective offensive units.

Ryan Miller's injury in 2008 was one of the last major setbacks this team had but it was a big one. His injury coincided with MTM's and left two offensive line starters out for the year. Miller, thought of as a potential first round NFL draft pick, will be critiqued on his feet and his ability to maintain his athleticism, something that was a point of needed improvement to go along with his 6'7" frame.

As for RB Speedy Stewart, their is nothing you can hope for except a full recovery. Already a fan favorite for his diminutive size but amazing production as a true freshman, Speedy was one of the only playmakers on the 2008 team before breaking his leg in the Texas A&M game. He is a lunch pail guy who outworked other running backs to get on the field. He figures to play a big part in the 2009 season as the Buffs seem to be switching the offense to feature Stewart, Darrell Scott, Demetrius Sumler and Brian Lockridge in the offense.

Now to WR Markques Simas. It isn't so much about the injury with Simas but his eligibility and off the field focus. Boy, are we really going to depend on him and hopefully we don't get let down. The news out of Buff camp is that he has matured and dedicated himself to his academics. No one is questioning his football skills but we will have to wait and see if he can juggle both starting on a Division One football team as well as maintain his grades. if he does, Simas instantly becomes the most talented wideout on the team and hopefully with fulfill that void in the playmaker role. Plus he will be Hawkins/Hansen/Ballenger/Evans' new best friend.

As I said before, this week's injury to Max Tuioti-Mariner was very disheartening. It was MTM's third ACL tear and is another offseason injury that has plagued the Buffs during "non contact drills." What is even more troubling is why Tuioti-Mariner was even out there doing this sort of work coming off two ACL injuries when he was supposed to be limited in spring ball. You wonder now if MTM will ever be the same. Not many people recover 100% from one ACL injury, let alone three at 300 pounds. That is a lot of stress on those knees.

There is no doubt in my mind, the first week of news reports will be about how players are recovering from injury and how injury has kept players like MTM, Ray Polk, Blake Behrens, Devin Head, Jalil Brown, Jon Major and others from being able to go at full speed.

0

As you can see again, the sophomore class is, once again, extremely large compared to the other classes. Combining the offensive chart's 18 sophomore players, 35 of the total 100 players are in year number 2. If you add in incoming freshman, 63 of the total players are underclassmen. No excuses, right?

Just don't look at the defensive line spots. The Buffs seem to be in a good position on the offensive line, especially with the two new additions in the 2009 class. If they could add one more offensive lineman for depth, I feel good about that unit for the next 2 - 3 years. It is just the opposite for the defensive line. They all might be players but the fact that we haven't seen any substantial results from these guys scares me to death. Their are clearly depth issues as well. The fact that the front four were dead tired in the Nebraska game and the coaching staff refused to substitute any of these guys for a substantial period would conclude that this year could be a struggle upfront. Right now, the Buffs don't seem to be in on a ton of DL and DE which is extremely troubling. If the Buffs could get 2 - 3 JUCO players to fill this void, it would go a long way to solidifying the defense.

For as much as the defensive front might be a worry, the linebacker and corner positions must make all CU fans smile. LB coach Brian Cabral has a ton of talent to work with at the linebacker spot. The X factor of this whole unit will be Katoa and Major. If Katoa can right the ship and Major can fully recover from the ACL injury, this unit could be the best in the Big 12. If the defensive line situation does not improve, look for guys like B.J. Beatty, Marcus Burton and Michael Sipili to be a pseudo-defensive end/rush end all year. In the defensive backfield, the Buffs are young at safety but Anthony Perkins and Patrick Mahnke showed that they have some talent and stepped in pretty well as freshman last year. The Buffs will also get 2008 grey shirt S Paul Vigo in this year as well as S Steven Hicks and S Vince Ewing to add depth. You might also seem some slotted at corner back make the move back to safety (Jalil Brown would be a likey candidate to get more playmakers on the field). CU is also in on a few other safeties in the 2009 recruiting class that would provide much needed depth on both defense and special teams.

Now to the corners. This could rival the linebacker spot for the best unit on the team. Cha'pelle Brown and Ben Burney (2007 starter who was injured last year) return as well as juniors Jalil Brown and Jimmy Smith. Smith really stepped up last year and played a ton down the stretch. He looks to be piecing together the consistency that goes with playing corner as he has all of the physical attributes that you crave in a corner. The Buffs will play some good receivers next year and I expect Smith to be on all of them. If we could only generate a pass rush!

I am not going to talk about punters and kickers because we all know we need new one(s).

In summation, we can see the depth starting the build in certain spots but their are still some major concerns at a few positions: defensive line, wide receiver (could be fixed if Josh Smith progresses, Andre Simmons qualifies and Diante Jackson becomes a Buff) and can the Buffs win with their current situation at quarterback?

Like I said in The Ralphie Report's first review of the Oklahoma State at Colorado Buffaloes contest Saturday night on ABC (click here for ABC coverage map, game time 6:00pm MT), the Buffs magic number is one and the game with the Pokes should probably be considered their best chance to become bowl eligible. How scary is that? CU is a 17 point underdog and that is their best chance? Considering the Buffs lack of success on the road over the past three years (2 - 15), it has to be. That is a tough prospect to swallow. One more win would do wonders for this program but it is hard to find enough rocks to turn over for how the Buffs pull one out tomorrow. Just looking at a comparison of like teams the Buffs and Cowboys have played this year should give you a clue as to why Colorado is big underdogs this week:

Missouri

W, 28 - 23

But if their is any reason to not rule out the Buffs is the fact that Dan Hawkins always seems to get his team to win one game that they shouldn't. See Texas Tech in 2006 and Texas Tech & Oklahoma last year. In all of those games, the Buffs were double digit underdogs. CU has yet to have that big time double digit upset this year. Is Saturday night the game? Here is what they need to do to beat the Pokes:

Protect Hawkins

We saw last week that given the time, Hawkins played out of his mind. Last week aws the first week that you could say the QB consistently had time to throw the ball. The reasons: Hansen and the Buffs was a run first team that wore down the front four in the first half, Iowa State had a bad defensive line and the CU offensive line stepped up in key spots in the second half. This OSU defensive line is the worst in the Big 12 in getting to the quarterback. If the offensive line plays well and gives Hawkins a chance to throw against the 10th ranked pass defense in the Big 12, the Buffs can stick around.

see the rest of the "Keys to the Game" and the prediction after the jump...

Mistake Free Football

The first "key to the game" only works if Hawkins makes smart decisions and doesn't turn the ball over. This week, turnovers could lead to a blow out (see Missouri). Another reason the Buffs cannot turn the ball over is the fact that the CU defense has been amazingly strong when the opposing offenses start drives at the 20 or inside their own 20. In that scenario, the Buffs have only given up 3 field goals and 3 touchdowns. Make Oklahoma State drive the field when they have the ball as the Buffs have shown they can hold their own on defense. Colorado will also need a few breaks early to stay in this one.

Mix It Up

I realize that most think Hawkins should play the whole game but we have seen that show before. You know what will happen. The defense will pin their ears back and realize that Scott is the only threat to run the ball and, when he is 6 yards back at a stand still, he is not a very effective back. I still believe that Hansen is an important piece of the puzzle and needs to be mixed in just to keep the defense honest and provide a running threat. This will also free up Scott. And another thing, get Scott outside today. Let him get in space.

Make OSU One Dimensional

By making the Pokes one dimensional, I mean stop the the Big 12's leading rusher Kendall Hunter. Make Zac Robinson beat you Saturday. I worry much more about Hunter than I do about Robinson, and with the way the CU defensive backs have played this year, I think they can contain Dez Bryant enough to slow down the Oklahoma State offense. I am excited the see the Cha'pelle Brown vs Dez Bryant matchup, in fact. Brandon Pettigrew is the X factor. The Buffs have never been able to stop the opposition's stud tight end (see Chase Coffman). Either way you look at it, Oklahoma State will probably get 28 points + but with Robinson having to air it out, the Buffs have a greater chance at turning over the Pokes.

The Special Team HAS TO PLAY BETTER

I don't know if that is possible after what I posted earlier this week showing the Buffs special teams have cost them over 8 points per game. Oklahoma State ranks 2nd in the nation in punt returns and 19th in the nation on kickoff returns. Oklahoma State can take it to the house every time they touch the ball. Whoever kicks off will need to kick it out of the end zone. Josh Smith would help the Buffs with a couple big returns. And do the Buffs dare attempt a field goal? No, either go for it or punt. Don't let the kickers kill the momentum like they have in past games.

Prediction Time

I want to believe, Buffs fans but it is hard to ignore the chart that shows how much better OSU has played similar opponents. I think Oklahoma State has comparable talent to Missouri which has to scare any Buffs' fans. I am not going to put down what I think the score will be because it is depressing, so I will try to keep the mood a little better and just say, I think the Buffs will lose. Here's to hoping I am wrong!

Motivation should be there today for Colorado: Let's win one for the seniors. I would argue that there isn't a senior group across the nation who has been up against more adversity than this senior class at Colorado. Go get it for them today!

Just How Bad Has CU's (Not So) Special Teams Been?

It has now been officially stated by me that the entire operations known as the CU special teams needs to be blown up and put back together. New players, new coaches...everything. The main reason: CONSISTENTLY being horrible, costing the Buffs points and, since the beginning of the season, not giving the Buffs anything positive. Yes, Josh Smith will bust one here and there that will give CU good field position, but not since the Eastern Washington game has he really put the Buffs in an immediate position to score. So just how bad are the Buffs this year on special teams? According to my calculations, the Buffs have given up a total of 81 points to the opposition on special teams. Get out your calculator and do the math. 81/10 = 8.1 points/game. See the chart below for a breakdown of what I am counting in my 81 points. You could argue against one of the Missouri touchdowns due to bad coverage and short punt but most of the other "blunders" are truly legitimate. The number could be higher if you factor in the momentum changers the missed field goals cost the Buffs in the Texas game and the Florida State game. You could even throw the Iowa State game in as one of those games where the Buffs convert, it may be a different outcome. 81 points. Yes, Josh Smith has a few good returns and a touchdown against CSU that would offset a few points but when the CU place kickers are 28.6% on the season in made field goals and the Buffs play musical punters in the Mizzou game, they lose the benefit of the doubt in a lot of scenarios. To make matters worse, the Buffs are 117th in the nation in kickoff coverage, giving up 27.17 yards/kickoff. There are only 119 teams in FBS! CU ranks 85th in punt coverage giving up 11.0 yards/punt. For how good WR/KR Josh Smith has seemed to have done this year, the Buffs still rank 50th in punt return average and 54th in kick return average. In net punting, the Buffs only average 39.1 yards/punt which is good for 79th in the nation. I am sorry, this performance is not acceptable. 8.1 points a game plus the influence that poor special teams play has on the momentum of the game has killed the Buffs this year. I believe it cost them the Florida State game, gave them no chance against Missouri and could have cost them the Iowa State game.

As you can imagine, being in the stands today at Folsom Field was quite a roller coaster. In the first half, I couldn't fathom what I was seeing; the Buffs had hit rock bottom, with 8 minutes left and Iowa State up two scores, I felt the Buffs were done, with less than 10 seconds, I thought the comeback and offensive explosion was all for not. At halftime I wanted to walk over to the student section and tell the recruits who were watching "sorry for wasting their time." But I should have known better. This was reminiscent of Eastern Washington. The Buffs were supposed to win and got down early. A few quick strikes in the fourth quarter, a late defensive stand and the Buffs come out victorious. Unbelievable. I saw some things today I thought I would never see. Most of it on special teams but an Iowa State option on the one yard line. That put a smile on my face. Either way you look at it, this Buffs team is not for the faint of hearts. I am going to stay as positive as possible in this post because all wins, especially for this Buffs team, should be celebrated and Penn State lost today. Hey, at least CU isn't Tennessee! Yeah, that SEC is really tough with those bruiser programs like Tennessee, Auburn and Georgia. Don't burn me SEC fan!

I will lead off with the negative and something I will definitely touch on again later in the week. I hate calling out coaches and players but the special teams play is not acceptable and immediate action needs to occur. Yes, a coach can't control missed field goals directly or roughing the punter but you when poor play becomes a habit, it is on the coach. How many points have the Buffs left on the field this year in missed opportunities in the special teams game? It has to be in the 50's probably the 60's or 70's. Look at the laundry list today that should have cost the Buffs the game today:

-2 missed chip shot field goals in the first half
-1 blocked extra point that was a looming problem when looking at the scoreboard for most of the game
-2 consecutive roughing the punter penalties
-1 kickoff out of bounds in the fourth quarter
-2 kickoff returns to the 35 yard line +, especially the one on Iowa State's last drive that gave them a short field.

That is some sort of laundry list that has become a habit of this Buffs team. I don't know what the problem is but I have reached my breaking point as I am sure most CU fans have. High school kids do a better job than this. Special team's is about preparation and execution. Youth, injuries...all of the Hawkins excuses doesn't mean anything on special teams. It's knowing your assignment and executing. Special teams is a "want to" part of the game and the Buffs are embarrassingly bad here. Blow up the unit, recruit a kicker, freaking get Ron Prince here, let him coach the offense and special teams. That guy makes special teams a priority at least. I'm done with it. How do you let bad teams hang around? Mess up special teams. The Buffs aren't good enough not to be discipline on special teams. I'll try to be more positive from here on out.

Offensive and defensive reviews after the jump....

So, you see what a true hurry up offense can do now? If you turned the game off at halftime, you didn't see it but in the fourth quarter, the Buffs were running a true hurry up offense and it gassed the Iowa State defensive linemen, allowing Hawkins to get comfortable in the pocket. It was a thing of beauty. It was how you imagined it; altitude, opposing team sucking wind and the Buffs moving the ball at will in the fourth quarter. And given the opportunity with time in the back field to throw, Hawkins looked like the quarterback we thought we had coming into the year and the quarterback that we saw flashes of last year. I have been whining for a quick pass game all year and the Buffs finally did it today with Patrick Williams, Scotty McKnight and Cody Crawford excelling at the wide receiver position. Cody delivered the ball with timing. Iowa State was continually off the wideouts 8 - 10 yards and it was pick and choose passing at its finest. The Buffs scoring drives were 9 plays 63 yards, 9 plays 84 yards, 8 plays 80 yards and 11 plays 81 yards. Those are sustained and efficient drives, all of which were in the second half. Freshman QB Tyler Hansen in the first half struggled as Iowa State was shifting their linebackers a lot, mixing up the offensive line and keeping Hansen moving around. Hansen began giving up on passing plays early and showing happy feet in the pocket. He had a few good runs but overall, he never got the timing offense going like Hawkins did. The ball was out of Hawkins hands quick and into the wide receivers hands to make plays. Darrell Scott got his start and carries to get in a rhythm. He still needs work but I love to watch him run out there. The Buffs, with those long and sustained drives, wore down an already slow and mediocre defense. Iowa State was extremely slow which was the reason they were giving the Buffs' "less than speedy receivers" a 10 yard cushion.

As for the defense, CB Jimmy Smith showed why we get so excited about his potential. The guy was inspired today and he dominated in pass coverage. Smith had 9 tackles and three breakups. He probably should have had 1 or 2 picks but that is why he plays corner. All the corner backs played pretty well regardless of the 200+ yard passing game by Iowa State. I wasn't very impressed with the CU linebackers today. The unit gave up easy yards and allowed Iowa State to out physical them at the point of contact. I was a little disappointed today in Ryan Walters. He had 16 tackles so the stat sheet will look good but he missed a ton of tackles in the hole on the first drive of the game that allowed Iowa State to get points and the last drive he whiffed on the option play that went for 27. I hold him to a high standard and the Buffs need him to make those plays that doesn't allow the offense to get big chunks of yards. The defense had its moments of fine play and then they had their moments when they couldn't get a stop when they needed it. Of course the special teams had a part in that, giving the Iowa State offense a short field. But the defense got their big stop on the goal line in what was one of the most baffling play calls I have ever seen. Iowa State ran an option on the one yard line that got stopped. Thank the man upstairs for coaches like Bill Stewart and Gene Chizik who have poor clock management and play calling. Iowa State wasted a time out with 40 seconds left after the 27 yard option run that got them down to the 14 yard line and stopped the clock on a first down. Then Iowa State kept running the ball with one time out left. Then with 4 seconds left, instead of running the ball straight at CU which they did at will or taking your 6'3" 220 lb quarterback on a sneak, the Cyclones ran a wide option with a lone wide receiver trying to seal the corner. Thanks for the win coach Chizik!

At times it was ugly. At times it looked like a well oiled machine. It's just a crazy year and a crazy team. It went from the worst half of college football I have seen this year to visions of the offense I thought we would see every week. It was a good win with all the recruits in the stadium because Folsom Field was excited and the Buff players were emotional. Yes, it was a very bad Iowa State team but coming back to win was definitely something the recruits had to enjoy watching. And for the current players, it gives them two chances to get bowl eligible and it may spark them for an upset in the next two weeks. Who knows, I wouldn't hold my breath but college football is a crazy game.
