Every day while catching up on my daily Nole must reads, I very often wonder to myself, "Are my 2009 Noles going to be better than last year’s team?"

Thank you for playing along, and we are almost finished. So far we have analyzed, discussed, and you have voted on whether the Defensive Line, the Receivers/Tight End, the Secondary, and the Offensive Backfield, will be better, the same, or worse than last years equivalent unit. Today we will take a look at the Linebackers, to determine if this unit has progressed, expected to continue at the same level, or regressed, in comparison to last years linebacking unit.

Going into this last offseason, all 3 of the units making up the defense (defensive line, linebackers, and secondary) clearly needed to be addressed if there was going to be any noticeable improvement in 2009

With the graduation of Derek Nicholson and Toddrick Verdell, the Seminoles lost their top two tacklers of the 2008 season. The pair combined for 147 tackles, 23 TFL, 5 Scks, 5 QBH, 3 FF, 4 FR, 2 PBU, and 1 INT. With these two players now gone, this revamped linebacking corps is considered by many to be the main concern of the entire defensive unit.

All of the LB position were wide open for competition during this last spring drills, and while there was some very good competition for the two starting jobs left open, many questions remain unanswered. Chuck Amato only had six scholarship linebackers available during those drills, and with Dekoda Watson out rehabbing his elbow, the offense shredded the defense for most of the spring. In addition, four of the six linebackers on the spring two-deeps were just sophomores.

Even though they will be playing together as a unit for the first time, there has been some talk that the linebacking corps have developed a close knit relationship, both on and off the field during this past off season. I hope that this is the case, because they will need to communicate, trust, and to cover for each other when mistakes are made.

Let's get right to it.

LINEBACKERS

2008 STRONG SIDE LINEBACKER=Dekoda Watson started 7 games, Kendall Smith started 3 games, and Kenny Ingram started 3. Ingram who was listed as a safety, filled in due to injuries and suspensions and he is now gone.

2009 PROJECTED STRONG SIDE LINEBACKER=Dekoda Watson, Nigel Carr (soph), and Mister Alexander(Soph)

Dekoda Watson=Going into his last season at FSU and one of the few defensive veterans left over from the 2008 campaign, Watson is expected to be the emotional and physical leader of the Seminole defense this year. Watson was the lone Seminole to land a spot on the All-ACC defensive squad. He has recorded 96 tackles over the last two seasons for Florida State and he played his best football at the end of 2008 with 28 tackles over the final four games of the year. An athletic linebacker, who reminds me some of Michael Boulware, Watson nearly matched his career high in tackles (50) last season (47) despite missing six starts due to the suspension and to various injuries. Watson missed all of the spring sessions after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, but contributed as a coach by teaching and helping to develop the younger linebackers. He has the athleticism, the big-play ability, anticipates the snap count very well, and explodes on movement. Watson is amazingly strong for his size with 48" shoulders and a 26" waist. While recovering from his surgery, since he could only do ab exercises, he was quoted as saying "I’ve got abs to my throat almost."

2008 MIDDLE LINEBACKER=Derek Nicholson started all 13 games, was the leading tackler and he is gone. TT=81, TFL=15, SCK=1, QBH=3, PBU=1, FR=4, FF=2.

2008 PROJECTED MIDDLE LINEBACKER=Junior Kendall Smith will get the first crack at replacing Nicholson, followed by Senior Recardo Wright.

2008 WEAKSIDE LINEBACKER=Toddrick Verdell started 12 games, was the teams 2nd leading tackler, and he too has left. TT=66, TFL=8, SCK=4, INT=1, PBU=1, QBH=2, FF=1. Verdell injured his groin against Colorado and sat out against Miami, when Bradham started in his place.

2008 PROJECTED WEAKSIDE LINEBACKER=Two true sophomores Nigel Bradham, and Nigel Carr sit atop the depth chart as the weakside linebacker.

OTHERS WHO CONTRIBUTED IN 2008 AND ARE OUT=Vince Williams is injured

OTHERS WHO MAY CONTRIBUTE IN 2009=???????????

So there you have it. There are some pretty big shoes to fill and there are many questions that need to be answered by this years linebacking unit. The biggest question I think, is how well has Dekoda Watson recovered from his surgery. This question will start to be answered later today as practice finally begins. Can Smith and the 2 Nigels perform as effectively, or anywhere near the level of Nicholson and Verdell? Can this unit, with it's lack of depth, stay healthy all season? Does Chuck Amato still have it in him, and can he work any kind of miracles with this group?

My answer to every question with the exception of Watson's recovery is NO!

If Watson has truly and fully recovered, and if he can stay healthy, IMO the strongside position will PROGRESS.

IMO, the middle and weakside linebacking positions will REGRESS.

The lack of depth of this unit is a major concern. I hope I am wrong, but I have no confidence in Amato and I don't think he will bring much to the party. And finally, while this is not part of this debate, my questions about the defensive lines ability to keep blockers off the LB's, will only add to the hardships this group faces this season.

In this piece, I examine our predictions and pre-game thoughts. What did we nail, what did we miss,... and what can we learn from this?

DEFENSE

Strategy Musings

18 Turnovers in 6 games is sloppiness and bad luck. We saw that turnovers are often a product of bad luck when we faced Georgia Tech, who has similarly been plagued by turnovers. We cannot rely on Clemson turning the ball over. We each had 2 turnovers. Turnovers did not win or lose this game.

Excuse me if this is simplistic, but Clemson's offensive line sucks. Check.

I'm not going to talk about C.J. Spiller very much in this space. I know that we are scheming to stop him, and as you'll see, his line doesn't block for him. He is an NFL back, and we have to control him. We won't shut him down completely. Spiller finished with 121 yards on 16 touches, 44 coming on the screen play in the first quarter. I think we did a good job of executing the "let Spiller get his within reason, and take everything else away." strategy.

How should we exploit this weakness [Clemson's offensive line]? BY NOT BLITZING CRAZILY. The offensive line doesn't move people off the ball at all. They have been handled by some good defensive lines; notably GTech, Alabama, and Wake Forest). Florida State's defensive line hasn't drawn much praise around here as of late, but they are still a good defensive line capable of winning this battle without help from the blitzers. Hmm... 6 sacks and numerous pressures, hurries, and knockdowns... all from the defensive line. Chhhecck.

Clemson cannot sustain drives because they are sloppy, poorly coached, undisciplined, not in sync, and imprecise. Oh, they also don't run the ball and win the battle of first down. Clemson had drives of (play-Yards): 5-80, 9-52, 10-52, and 11-97. As for the 1st down stuff... Clemson faced unfavorable situations in 75% of 2nd and 3rd downs.

Let's hope that Mickey doesn't dare Cullen to beat single coverage deep. Good job Mickey and the Defense Staff!

Aaron Kelley is 6'5 and really good. That said, I'm okay with Patrick Robinson playing him man-up, as long as we occasionally flash deep help his way. Robinson is a very good cover corner, and Kelly is a lazy route runner with a lot of physical talent. Kelley finished with 5 catches for 49 yards. Considering that CU doesn't spread the ball that much, that isn't horrible. He also blatantly interfered on one catch.

Their TE is a complete non-factor. Damn! He had a nice catch for a TD, and another catch. 2 for 16 yards. Not a gashing.

If we allow big plays on screens to Spiller or big plays to Ford this Saturday, you should be angry. 1 big screen, but other than that... nice job.

BC was incapable of generating pressure without a blitz, specifically off the edge. Florida State doesn't have this same problem, since we have that Everette Brown guy. There should be NO REASON TO BLITZ 6. IF YOU WANT TO SEND WATSON OFF THE EDGE AND HAVE THE FS IN DEEP MIDDLE THAT IS FINE. Please though, none of the crazy stuff. Everette Brown is a beast. EB has another bad offensive tackle to feast on! I'm not sure if Clemson will help on EB, but considering their TE sucks, they probably should. 3 sacks, at least 3 pressures, a monster of a game. Clemson... you can't throw to a 4th option if you only have time to view 2. He must be doubleteamed on every play.

My hopes are that we see a lot of Watson and Verdell in this game. I love Nicholson, but I'm not sure his skillset works here. Watson and Verdell's speed should be a huge benefit. We need to make Harper throw accurately in the short and intermediate levels. This may be the one I am most proud of. Watson led the team in tackles, and Verdell was 4th.

Defensive Goals

Keep Clempzun in 2nd and long: 33% of First Down Rushes for 2 or fewer yards. (The STUFFED %). 50% is a win here (9/18).
Use penetration to get stops: 40% Win Rate on 3rd+ 4th n short rushing. Clemson did not have a 3rd and short attempt.
Don't have your good work go for naught: 1 or fewer draws of 3rd and 8 or Longer for first downs. This is big!. Excellent work here, as we stopped all draw plays well short of the first down.
No rushing TD's in the red zone. Make Harper throw the ball accurately in tight spaces. Honestly, this was fine, as a run would take time off the clock (their rush TD occured with little time left).
Take good angles to the football: No more than 4 runs over 15 yards and less than 2 runs over 35 yards. None went for 35, 2 went over 20, but they had 6 over 10.
Harper under a QB Rating of 115 overall. (120 is about 18 completions in 30 attempts for 200 yards; 1 touchdowns and 1 interceptions.) Harper had a good day throwing... when he did throw, but his performance is slightly overrated due to the screen pass.
Limit Big Plays: no more than 5 passes of 15+ yards, and nothing over 40. See next goal. Ugh. Bad. A 44 yard TD, and 8 throws of 15+ yards.
Hit Harper: Play to the echo of the whistle. Have a sack rate (sacks / (pass plays + sacks)) of 10% or more. (27 pass attempts and 3 sacks, so 3/30). As Mickey said... "you never want to hurt anybody, but our kids understand that if a guy wants to take himself out of a ballgame that is his business. You have got to hit him, you have got to inflict some pressure on him with contact for that to happen...." 6 sacks, 35 throws. (6/41)= 15%.
Be studs on 3rd and long: make the tackle when they throw underneath and don't allow them to get the 3rd down. Limit Harper to a double digit QB rating on 3rd down and 7+. This was excellent. 100% success. 11 for 11. Domination. Bring pressure, force quick throw, tackle.
Do not fall for play action on short yardage downs: DB's rarely make these plays but are usually the ones burned for trying to help out too much. No short yardage downs.
Create 2 turnovers. Check.
LESS THAN 4.75 YPP. 316 on 71 plays is 4.5 per play. That's not terrible.
No Plays of 50+ Yards. I doubt CU can repeatedly drive on this team. Let's make them try. Pass, but barely.
10 "Stops" Mickey defines a stop as a turnover, punt, or a surrender on downs. That's fine by me. We got 9 of 13.
Less than 50% Red Zone TD Scoring. They scored 66% redzone tds, however, a field goal would be useless in the endgame.
No scores off sudden change (make CU get a first down off a turnover. Do not allow the home run immediately after a turnover). FAIL. Muffed punt, 2 plays later... TD.
Hold CU under 300 yards. Mickey's goal is 300, but CU is a bit better than their record. 316. You be the judge.

Defense Prediction

FSU will not get killed by big plays, but will give up some. Clemson will foolishly abandon the run as they've done all year. As you'll see when I write it later, Clemson won't have many plays to work with. CU will rush 27 times (including sacks) for 100 yards, and will throw 30 times for 200 yards. They'll hit one play of 45+ yards, and score at TD. They'll get a fg off of their lone decent DRIVE of the game. They snag a field goal on a short field, and somehow get two more as well, for a total of 19 points. Expect big days from Watson solid play from the corners.

Clemson had 1 play over 40 yards (44), 5 of 20+, and 16 plays of 10+ yards. That's not good. They did abandon the run as the game wore on: 24 first half runs, 12 second half runs. Clemson had 73 plays to work with, largely because of FSU's 2 huge special teams miscues, which immediately gave CU 12 more plays.

If you look at the game [Georgia Tech] as a defensive aberration, then there is reason for great optimism Saturday. Fsued

OFFENSE

Strategy

On offense, look for FSU to go on LONG drives. I see a lot of really, really long drives, holding the ball, dominating the clock, and frustrating Clemson. Running short on time here. Not a ton of big plays. FSU had the ball 11 times. They had 5 drives of at least 7 plays and 50+ yards. As for dominating the clock?... not so much.

The running game will be all about balance. Expect us to exploit Clemson's considerable speed by using a lot of the zone read, but more importantly, by having Jermaine and Antone gashing Clemson on cutbacks. I predict an awesome cutback run of 45+ yards by one of those guys. Clemson will overpursue, so end-arounds, reverses, and trick plays are all in play. Ding. Ding. Ding. Cutbacks? Check. End Arounds, reverses? Check.

Clemson's pass defense is 75th in the nation in OPAED, which isn't great, but isn't as bad as some we've faced.

They will take away the easy stuff, but I do think we can throw the screens (and we should even if they aren't effective-- to slow CU down.)

Their corners are also short, so I expect to see us take some shots to Carr and Surrency.

Parker seems to be coming into his own as well, and could have a decent day. He might be our best offensive player-- still.

CU will struggle with the Carr quarmire-- whether to guard the jump ball or play aggressively against the bubble. I still expect them to give us the difficult throws if we can hit them (deep outs and in's, skinny posts on a rope, etc).

So, the goals for the FSU running game?

45% of carries by FSU RB's on First down go for 3 or more yards (win first down). This seems like a strange goal, but it is all about staying out of 3rd and long. I know this number seems low, but I'm trying to set realistic goals here.. 63%... very good.
60% conversions running on 3rd/ 4th & 2 or less. 1-1 is 100%
1 or fewer fumbles (Not fumbles lost, but Fumbles). Pass. TC doesn't count here.
40 yards rushing from Christian. This does not count sacks. I will parse our the sacks. 46 yards works.

The goals for the Passing Game?

QB Rating of 120+ Clearly, we're not a high completion % pass game, but Jimbo has stated that he doesn't care about that. Low completion % but big plays are fine by me. A rating of 125 is roughly 15 completions in 27 attempts for 205 yards; 1 touchdowns and 1 interceptions. Didn't happen. Now, I did guess exactly how many passes we would throw, but we didn't hit deep balls. Not going to get th QB rating up without yardage. Still though, he was 16-27, and I predicted 15-27. Pretty close there.
Special Sack Rate (sacks + Holdings on dropbacks / sacks + pass attempts + holding on dropbacks) of less than 14%. Yes, 14%. That isn't a typo. If we have 30 pass plays, we must not allow more than 4 combined holding penalties and sacks. Obviously, I would prefer 4 holdings and zero sacks, as we don't risk injury or fumbles with the holding, and as we all know, the team that commits more penalties usually wins the game. it's true. 2 Sacks and 27 passes. No Holds. That's 7%. Credit the line for tightening up after a brutal opening series nad credit Jimbo for limiting the exposure via rollout, short route, and screen.
7 Yards per Attempt. NO, didn't happen.

General Offensive Goals

5.3 YPP(Yards Per Play). 66 Plays at 5.5 YPP = 365 yards. 6.7 is great.
No Personal Fouls (except clipping, I'm fine with that here). I know that the team committing more penalties usually wins the game, but these are non-aggression penalties. Smart.
Less than 2 turnovers. Hooray! Only 1 turnover.
60%+ Red Zone Touchdowns (Kicking is losing). We've done a decent job of this this year. 3 for 5 is 60% on the nose.

So, what will happen?

With CU putting up 19 points, FSU will need 20+, and they will get it.

FSU runs 39 times (including sacks) for 160 yards (not a great average, but it includes sacks) ,36 times for 266 is sick.

and throws 27 times for 200 yards.

We will probably commit 2 turnovers, but hopefully they are not costly. I think we hold the ball for more than 33 Minutes, while getting 2 td's and 4 field goals, as CU gives up some yardage but not huge points. Despite the low sack totals, CU's DLine is very talented, as is their secondary. None of their LB's would make our ROSTER, however, and we will eventually exploit that advantage.

Gano will make us forget about the kick coverage woes.

Your announcers are a bunch of no-names. That's often better as they'll do their homework and come prepared.

The offense will be up later when I take a study break.This preview will be shorter until Saturday morning, at which point I will add more. I have a midnight deadline on a paper, and I have to devote most of my time to finishing. The preview will be incomplete until then.

I've seen Clemson play one game in person this year (Alabama), and 3 more games on TV (Losses to Wake, Maryland, and Georgia Tech). Even after seeing 4 games, however, this team is still hard to read.

Here's my biggest point of hesitation: Clemson has to replace FOUR starters on the offensive line, including both their all-conference LG and all-conference LT. It appears there's plenty of talent in this unit, but...holy smokes, is that a lot to lose. And no matter how great your RBs are, they're going to be limited if they're having to make their first move 3 yards in the backfield. This is still likely the best offense in the conference, but I'm thinking good defenses will still be able to slow them down quite a bit. This isn't a "they're getting their yards no matter the opponent" situation.

(One more point of hesitation: they were +13 in turnovers in '07. That's hard to duplicate in back-to-back years.)

What we can do is play defense with controlled aggression. Excuse me if this is simplistic, but Clemson's offensive line sucks. The mainstream media fittingly glossed over this "minor" weakness of their football team. They are playing better now that they have a little bit more experience after suffering from some early season injuries and they're playing with more motivation under Dabo Swinney than they were under Tommy Bowden, but we still need to exploit this weakness.

How should we exploit this weakness? BY NOT BLITZING CRAZILY. The offensive line doesn't move people off the ball at all. They have been handled by some good defensive lines; notably GTech, Alabama, and Wake Forest). Florida State's defensive line hasn't drawn much praise around here as of late, but they are still a good defensive line capable of winning this battle without help from the blitzers.

Why is not excessively blitzing so important? When an offensive line can't move people, they resort to other tactics; usually misdirection plays, screens, or zone blocking principles. Clemson doesn't zone block well like FSU does (it feels so good to say that). They are a good screen team, however, and also run a good bit of misdirection. If they can't take us out of the play, they must depend on us taking ourselves out of the play. We should let our DLine play fast and loose, and let our LB's take care of business by reacting quickly. If we blitz a lot here, I fear that we will be out of position and will be gashed for the big play. Besides the obvious negatives of the big play, we really need to avoid allowing it against Clemson because...

Clemson cannot sustain drives because they are sloppy, poorly coached, undisciplined, not in sync, and imprecise. Oh, they also don't run the ball and win the battle of first down:

Against Georgia Tech, they had two- 40+ Yard drives in the 3rd quarter and did not have any other drives over 25 yards in the entire game.
Outside of a 70 yard drive, Wake held Clemson under 40 yards on all other drives.
Boston College allowed drives of 70, 80, & 70 yards, but--- those drives contained plays of 56, 45, 26, 24, and 23 yards. Even when their drives were long, they gained: 174 of the 220 yards these drives encompassed were gained on plays of 20+ yards.

Sometimes there is a good reason to blitz. This is not one of those times. We cannot afford to let Clemson hit us for big plays. Playing base defense and using our athleticism to limit yards after the catch-- or even better to deny the catch, will be a much better game plan.

Do you remember what I said about the VT game? A refresher:

We can't consistently block their pass rush, and honestly, should invite them to blitz. If they can get pressure with 4, why not let them bring 6 and give us single coverage? We'll need to win this with big plays; probably deep balls to Surrency Carr, or a series of screens. We won't drive on these guys.

That is Clemson against us to a T.

It's an especially good game plan because Clemson's QB Cullen Harper has a million dollar arm (first round draft pick level), but a 2-cent head. He sucks at throwing the underneath stuff and is sometimes really inaccurate. Think Jeff George. Does letting this guy throw deep balls against single coverage sound like the right idea to you? I thought not. Let's keep at least one man in deep zone coverage at all times.

Clemson will line up primarily in 3WR sets. This is usually good for FSU as we have the speed at LB to stay in our 4-3 alignment. In this game, however, Clemson has an NCAA track guy lining up in the slot. I'm not sure if we plan to use man coverage on him with Myron Rolle but I will say a prayer tonight that we do not attempt this. In keeping with the idea of "make Clemson earn it", this would be almost the reverse of what we should do. We need to play more Nickel in this game. I am fine with letting Corey Mangum play Ford if we have a deep safety. Let's hope that Mickey doesn't dare Cullen to beat single coverage deep. That's a dare he will lose.

As for their other receivers...

Tyler Gresham is 5'2 and white. Insert [good route runner] [understands the offense], etc. He doesn't have great hands though. Tony Carter should do just fine against him.

If I told you that our 2 corners should more than hold their own against an opposing team's best two receivers, that their offensive line sucked, and that their QB is wildly inconsistent but does have a big arm, how confident would you be?

Their TE is a complete non-factor (though against us, he is good for 11 catches and 140 yards).

If we allow big plays on screens to Spiller or big plays to Ford this Saturday, you should be angry.

You might be thinking

"FSUncensored, BC runs a soft cover-3 and Clemson gashed them. Didn't they try to limit big plays"?

Yes, and yes. BC has ZERO speed on defense, however, and they are incapable of generating pressure without a blitz, specifically off the edge. I figured I'd break out "Do Not Want Dog", since EB has another bad offensive tackle to feast on! DNWD is the official mascot of offensive tackle fear. It worked against Colorado and Va Tech.

I'm not sure if Clemson will help on EB, but considering their TE sucks, they probably should.

Clemson's offense is poorly coordinated and not precise in any way. This shows up in their over-reliance on the big play. They don't play as a unit and I think you'll see this on Saturday.

Our prime defensive play this Saturday should be: Cover-1 Blitzes. One blitzer off the outside (preferrably allowing Moffett to come inside, opposite of brown), and a deep safety in coverage to take away the deep ball. 6 man blitzes against this team, however, are foolish and unnecessary.

Let's do the goals:

The Goals for the Seminole Rushing Defense:

Keep Clempzun in 2nd and long: 33% of First Down Rushes for 2 or fewer yards. (The STUFFED %)
Use penetration to get stops: 40% Win Rate on 3rd+ 4th n short rushing
Tackle Well: Less than 10 missed tackles (A Mickey Andrews Goal)
Don't have your good work go for naught: 1 or fewer draws of 3rd and 8 or Longer for first downs. This is big!
No rushing TD's in the red zone. Make Harper throw the ball accurately in tight spaces.
Take good angles to the football: No more than 4 runs over 15 yards and less than 2 runs over 35 yards.

The benchmarks for the FSU Pass Defense

Harper under a QB Rating of 115 overall. (120 is about 18 completions in 30 attempts for 200 yards; 1 touchdowns and 1 interceptions.)
Limit Big Plays: no more than 5 passes of 15+ yards, and nothing over 40. See next goal.
Selective Pass Interference: do not give up the deep ball. If they do throw it, interfere like crazy.
Hit Harper: Play to the echo of the whistle. Have a sack rate (sacks / (pass plays + sacks)) of 10% or more. (27 pass attempts and 3 sacks, so 3/30). As Mickey said... "you never want to hurt anybody, but our kids understand that if a guy wants to take himself out of a ballgame that is his business. You have got to hit him, you have got to inflict some pressure on him with contact for that to happen...."
Be studs on 3rd and long: make the tackle when they throw underneath and don't allow them to get the 3rd down. Limit Harper to a double digit QB rating on 3rd down and 7+
Do not fall for play action on short yardage downs: DB's rarely make these plays but are usually the ones burned for trying to help out too much.
Confuse Harper Mix the coverages enough to confuse Harper. I'm annoyed that we give away our blitz too early. Let's wait to walk down, and at other times walk down and then back out.
Create 2 turnovers.

Final Goals For FSU's defense

LESS THAN 4.75 YPP
No Plays of 50+ Yards. I doubt CU can repeatedly drive on this team. Let's make them try.
10 "Stops" Mickey defines a stop as a turnover, punt, or a surrender on downs. That's fine by me.
Less than 50% Red Zone TD Scoring
No scores off sudden change (make CU get a first down off a turnover. Do not allow the home run immediately after a turnover)
Hold CU under 300 yards. Mickey's goal is 300, but CU is a bit better than their record.

CU's offense is ranked 90th by FEI for a reason. They aren't that good.

What will happen?

FSU will not get killed by big plays, but will give up some. Clemson will foolishly abandon the run as they've done all year. As you'll see when I write it later, Clemson won't have many plays to work with. CU will rush 27 times (including sacks) for 100 yards, and will throw 30 times for 200 yards. They'll hit one play of 45+ yards, and score at TD. They'll get a fg off of their lone decent DRIVE of the game. They snag a field goal on a short field, and somehow get two more as well, for a total of 19 points. Expect big days from Watson solid play from the corners.

Nike played the video on the jumbotron right before the Dreadnaught’s game against Boyd Anderson (which the Dreadnaughts won 27-22). As part of the program, the company is traveling across the country and visiting various top-ranked high school football teams in the week leading up to a big game. Each week they make donations to local community organizations, host team dinners, station a NikeiD booth for students to design their own shoes, conduct SPARQ training sessions for local Pop Warner teams, etc.

Warrick Dunn isn't my favorite Nole Player ever, but he is my favorite person to ever put on the G&G.

Steele, Feldman, Accuscore, FEI, and almost everyone else picked FSU to win. Count me in as well.

Clemson's pass defense is 75th in the nation in OPAED, which isn't great, but isn't as bad as some we've faced. They will take away the easy stuff, but I do think we can throw the screens (and we should even if they aren't effective-- to slow CU down.) Their corners are also short, so I expect to see us take some shots to Carr and Surrency. Parker seems to be coming into his own as well, and could have a decent day. He might be our best offensive player-- still. CU will struggle with the Carr quarmire-- whether to guard the jump ball or play aggressively against the bubble. I still expect them to give us the difficult throws if we can hit them (deep outs and in'sm skinny posts on a rope, etc)

So, the goals for the FSU running game?

45% of carries by FSU RB's on First down go for 3 or more yards (win first down). This seems like a strange goal, but it is all about staying out of 3rd and long. I know this number seems low, but I'm trying to set realistic goals here.
60% conversions running on 3rd/ 4th & 2 or less
1 or fewer fumbles (Not fumbles losT, but Fumbles)
40 yards rushing from Christian. This does not count sacks. I will parse our the sacks.

The goals for the Passing Game?

Less than .33 drops per 5 throws (works out to 2 or less per 35 throws)
QB Rating of 120+ Clearly, we're not a high completion % pass game, but Jimbo has stated that he doesn't care about that. Low completion % but big plays are fine by me. A rating of 125 is roughly 15 completions in 27 attempts for 205 yards; 1 touchdowns and 1 interceptions.
No careless throws into the flat. This is big, since these almost always go for a Pick-6.
Special Sack Rate (sacks + Holdings on dropbacks / sacks + pass attempts + holding on dropbacks) of less than 14%. Yes, 14%. That isn't a typo. If we have 30 pass plays, we must not allow more than 4 combined holding penalties and sacks. Obviously, I would prefer 4 holdings and zero sacks, as we don't risk injury or fumbles with the holding, and as we all know, the team that commits more penalties usually wins the game. it's true.
7 Yards per Attempt.
2 plays with 15+ YAC
No more than 1 BadReadBadThrow (BRBT) per 15 passes. This is very important if they play zone.
No more than 1 bad blitz pickup miss per 15 attempts (Marcus Sims, this is you). CU doesn't blitz much, and I doubt they bring 6+ guys more than once or twice.

General Offensive Goals

5.3 YPP(Yards Per Play). 66 Plays at 5.5 YPP = 365 yards.
No Personal Fouls (except clipping, I'm fine with that here). I know that the team committing more penalties usually wins the game, but these are non-aggression penalties.
Less than 2 turnovers
No more than 1 bad snap (McMahon, please step your game up and play like what a FROSH AA should play like as a Soph)
60%+ Red Zone Touchdowns (Kicking is losing). We've done a decent job of this this year.

So, what will happen?

With CU putting up 19 points, FSU will need 20+, and they will get it. FSU runs 39 times (including sacks) for 160 yards (not a great average, but it includes sacks), and throws 27 times for 200 yards. We will probably commit 2 turnovers, but hopefully they are not costly. I think we hold the ball for mor ethan 33 Minutes, while getting 2 td's and 4 field goals, as CU gives up some yardage but not huge points. Despite the low sack totals, CU's DLine is very talented, as is their secondary. None of their LB's would make our ROSTER, however, and we will eventually exploit that advantage.

Gano will make us forget about the kick coverage woes.

Welcome to another edition of Inside The Seminole Film Room! I want to give a huge thanks to the official stat guys Woody Hayes, Tommy Sabourin, Pat Campbell, Andrew Brady, Steve Heil, and Brian Taylor. I've never met them, but if you know them, thank them. They make this weekly report possible.

Why do we pay big money for Jimbo and Co.? Adjustments

11 First half passing plays netted 8 yards. 3-7, 15 yards (3 throwaways), 2 runs for 9 yards, and 2 sacks for -16 yards.
16 pass Plays netted 130 yards , 8-12 for 148, 1 TD, 1 run for 2, 1 Pass Interference for 4 yards, and 2 sacks for -20 yards.

We weren't nearly as unbalanced as unbalanced as people might think.

As always, we use these terms to denote formations:

"Chollie" is shotgun, 3 wide, 2 backs, like Charlie Ward ran.
"KGun" is what the Jim Kelly bills teams ran, with 3 WR, a TE, and back.
"BAMA" is Singleback, Twins WR, Twins TE (we sometimes line up in this with the FB acting as an HBack or second TE)
Hawaii is a 4WR GUN Trips Overload look out of Hawaii's playbook. It's Shotgun, with 3 WR and a rb all on the same side. This is great for forcing defenses to show their hand early.
Wendy's is 4 WR, or 4 Standing players, stacked behind each other in groups of 2, on each side of the offensive line. This is usually run with a tight alignment. I named it Wendy's because it's effectively a "DoubleStack"

You never really want to see that, but I am glad FSU is back to hitting people. Know why Taylor really broke his leg? BAMA. Zebrie and Spurlock don't double correctly, which kills this from the beginning, and they follow their weak double team with poor 1-on-1 blocking. Freshmen. I think if they did get this correctly blocked, we would have had big yards, as they were heavily shaded to the opposite side. Losing first down doesn't work well.

HAWAII (4wr Trips Overload). Rolll the pocket to the wide side (left). We're running a 20 Yardcomeback with the outside guy, the middle guy is running a pick. This is funny to watch on replay, and it pretty obvious. Easterling tries to pick Parker's defender (the 2 nickel corners were in bump, the outside corner was 15 yards off Surrency), but the defender plays it beautifully, nobody is open. VT Blitzed 5, and played cover 1. Hudson got beat here, amazingly, and sacked CP7. I'd prefer him to throw this away, but he didn't take a foolish chance, so that's good.

GREAT DLine series. Moses McCray is back, and he looks huge. People don't need to worry about our defensive tackle depth in the coming years. He looks like his frame could hold 320 lbs. Nicholson took a bad angle chasing Glennon the run. The really damaging play was the punt, which pinned us. That 51 yard change in field position, accounting for the change in possession, is worth probably 3 points on field position point expectency alone! VT started off better than us because of the return yadrage advantage. Good defensive series.

I-Form. Wow! How did we escape disaster here? Zebrie and Spurlock BOTH forgot to block the DT. Ponder's wheels save us here, as he rolls out. Amazingly lucky. This play was setup for a first down if Ponder can set and throw on time, as nobody was close to Antone within the design of the play. Lucky.

4 wide. Vtech plays 7 evenly across the line of scrimmage. Brings 4, drops 3. Difficult look for offensive line, and pressure comes early from outside. Ponder steps up, nobody open, looks to run, pressure from inside, he spins, dances, and somehow gets away. Crazy escapability here. Then he fires to Greg Carr coming back. Very dangerous throw, could have been sacked, but honestly, we got screwed here as Harris was clearly holding Carr, though Carr didn't do a great job of selling it.

Zero complaints about the defense here. 2nd viewing was pretty encouraging. We get screwed by the refs on 2 pick plays, and the 3-0 lead is almost entirely a result of Jody Allen's unit. In fact, at this point, VT had run 10 plays for -2 yards, and produced 3 points. I bet people won't realize how good this defense is until we lose them next year.

TIGHT BAMA. Strange play. Antone catches the ball way deep behind the line, unsure if this was his fault, an alignment problem, etc. VT had our number early. Ponder floated this ball too much, and it's a pass he hasn't throwm much in games. Protection was decent here. That's twice in the early going that Antone was open in space, and the ball didn't get to him properly (the first was when Zebrie/ Suprlock forgot to block the DT right in front of them, haha... nervous laughter... freshmen.) NOTE: This was probably the play he hurt his ribs.

K Gun. Easterling motion, hand to him. VT played this well, but we ran it to the short side. Lots of people are annoyed with the short side WR runs. I haven't made up my mind.

Great job of creating confusion by VT. Credit foster. Also, we seem to be trying out lots of new formations. This was "Caz as a wideout, Sims as a Tailback, nobody checks the corner blitz. Sack" Nobody was open here, and I don't realistically expect these guys to pick up this type of blitz at this point. The responsibility falls on Tone or Datko, and probably # 67 is at fault.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it looked like we were very close to doing some things, and VT had been very lucky/ perfect in playcalling at this point. Maybe it is because I know the final result. Gano is now punting, and he hits an amazing boomer. I favor shorter, higher punts, but that's because the alternative is usually long and low. Long and High is obviously the best. Smiles.

They went 4-wide, with a standup TE. We played very loose man (Mickey blamed himself for this, and would adjust soon after.) Blitz Nicholson. Good pickup, quick throw. Personal foul was iffy but not terrible.

Weak option look. Average blocking, poor recognition, not shedding blocks. That sounds like a recipe for disaster against Gtech. The DT's played well for most of this game, but not on this series.

I-Form. This was not a QB draw. VT brought 5, we blocked 1. 4 missed blocks. Datko held his, as he was the backside guy on the roll out. Nobody was open, but even if they were, McMahon, Spurlock, and Zebrie missed their blocks immediately, as in zero blocking time. I'm sure Jimbo loved that.

I-Form. Play action. Simms doesn't get a great block. BOTH right side blockers (Zebrie and Spurlock called for holds. Also, Datko was holding.) Zero time once again. If we pull this act in Atlanta, we lose. One positive: Ponder didn't get hit. Holding is better than sacks. Ponder that. Why? No loss of down and hopefully no QB hit.

I-Form. I rip on McMahon a lot, because he played horribly as of late, but he and Spurlock blocked about as well as they can on this play. First down win.

4WR Gun, Double Stack. I'm calling this formation "Wendy's" from now on. No blitz, average protection. Datko gets driven back into Ponder, and that causes the pass to be a little bit softer than it should have or would have been. Ponder definitely dinged his hand or wrist here, and that's something to watch. Nice route and adjustment by Carr.

Goal Line set. Let's talk strategy. Why in the world to teams load up against 3rd and short at midfield? The benefit is that you might stop the team, who should then go for it on 4th (can't punt from the 40 or kick a field goal). The downside to loading up so heavily is that it kills your angles. 2 good blocks by Hudson and Sims (who is markedly better in run blocking than blitz pickup, and Antone is off to the races. I-Form. Designed boot. I love this. 10 blockers instead of 9. D'Vo is a very special runner, and we need to get him several touches per game. Not only to showcase his talents and gain yards, but to give Ponder a break from the killshots, and to make the defense prep for it. If Marcus Sims doesn't trip, I think this goes for 20 yards. D'Vo must protect the ball better though, as his technique was downright reckless (loaf of bread).

This was a quick PA, designed throw to Sims, and the WR was basically blocking downfield. Very well read by VT. They keyed on something, not sure what. Killshot on Sims.

Hawaii. Oh man. Instant pressure. Ponder quick sets, and we're lucky he did, otherwise he would have been killed. VT had 7 on the LOS, dropped the DE's into coverage beautifully on delay, and blitzed the trips side (zone blitz). Zebrie picks up the blitz, incredibly. VT did a great job here, having their DT stab upfield, before dropping back. LB blitzing, on a half second delay. Spurlock realizes too late, but I'm not sure that even a guy like Hudson would have played this effectively, and the LB is untouched.Sometimes you must tip your cap. Cap Tips here go to VT DC Bud Foster, our RT Zebrie Sanders, and Ponder, who saw what was happening, rolled, and did not take a sack, but rather, threw the ball away.

How in the world did VT think they could single block Everette? EB has superpowers, and on this play he chose to use "spin." Everette Brown, guys, get a good look, and hope he is on your NFL team next year. He deserves it.

Over half of VT's rushing yards came on this option play, which isn't an option, but a fake option with a designed pitch. Why didn't we get this blocked well? Probably because our DB's were way off the ball. Mickey adjusted in the 2h. I doubt he thought we would see option from Glennon.

Photo Credit: Phil Sears, Democrat This was easily the play that pissed me off the most. Micheal Ray Garvin is a decent return guy, and he's a great olympian. Garvin should not ever be left on an island. He is a poor cover guy. Tack speed does not equal coverage skills. Patrick Robinson and probably TC are fine doing this. VT was in KGUN. We're not a good blitz team. We blitz a lot, but we're not especially good at getting past blockers. Garvin gets burned here, and it takes a great throw from Glennon to burn him,a nd I'm sure Garvin neever expected to have to cover for that long, but I question the wisdom of this call. I'd like to see some help to that side of the field from a safety. This is maybe the one call that I'll take issue with on Mickey's side. Garvin really isn't a good defensive player.
