Series: Wisconsin leads 35-18-2

TV: noon, Big Ten Network

Blog: Bucky's Fifth Quarter

Here is the Badgers' NCAA resume. After declining from 12-1 to 9-4 to 7-6 in Bret Bielema's second and third season, he and the Badgers seem to have reversed the trend. Wisconsin is 6-2 and has lost only to Ohio State and Iowa. With IU, Michigan, Northwestern, and Hawaii remaining, a 10-2 season is far from a longshot for the Badgers. Wisconsin has returned to the Barry Alvarez blueprint, with a strong defense and a power runner in the backfield. The Badgers rank #22 nationally in total defense and #22 in rushing offense.

John Clay has run for 839 yards and 10 touchdowns and averaged 4.7 yards per carry. The Badgers' pass game has been less than overwhelming: Scott Tolzien has stepped in as the starter and is completing 62 percent of his passes. He has thrown 9 TD passes but 8 interceptions. Last year's starter, Dustin Sherer, brother of IU's Chad Sherer, is now the third stringer. Nick Toon, Isaac Anderson, and Garrett Graham all have comparable receiving stats for Wisconsin. On defense, again the Badgers are very good overall, particularly the rushing defense, and O'Brien Schofield has 6.5 sacks.

After a five-year winning streak against the Badgers from 1986 to 1992, the Hoosiers have struggled against Wisconsin. Upsets in 2001 and 2002 are IU's only wins over Wisconsin in the last 16 seasons. Unfortunately, because the game was not televised (if I recall correctly), I can't find any video of the 63-32 beatdown from 2001, but here are the waning moments of the 2002 upset on a rainy day in Bloomington:

I have no idea what to think of this game. IU needs two wins in the next three games to become bowl-eligible. Of course, the Purdue game is a must-win in that regard, and beating Wisconsin at home seems more likely than beating Penn State on the road. Of course, in a 30 or 45 minute game, IU can beat anyone, but let's hope IU finds a way to play a complete game against the Badgers and ensure that the rest of the season matters.

Talk about making a statement. Wisconsin rebounded from two tough losses against elite Big Ten teams by posting its first shutout in three years. The Badgers' 37-0 victory over Purdue Saturday was nothing short of dominant. Give Bret Bielema and his coaching staff credit for pushing the right buttons. The team looked hungry from kickoff onward, setting the tone early with an 80-yard touchdown drive and preserving the shutout late by refusing to surrender a point. This was the kind of game the Badgers of last year may have dropped or struggled to win. The inspired play Saturday, particularly from the underclassmen, reinforced the belief that there is still a lot at stake this season, and generated justifiable excitement about the future of the program.

Purdue, like many teams in the Big Ten this season, has been tough to figure. Still, it is safe to say the Boilermakers are good enough that beating them 37-0 is impressive. They are the only team in the conference that has defeated Ohio State. And they only lost by two points to an Oregon team that is perfect in Pac-10 play because of a missed extra point. Purdue had scored at least 20 points in each of its first eight games before playing the Badgers. Most importantly, this was a hot team, one that came into Madison fresh off of two Big Ten victories.

Many of us had been waiting for a Bielema-coached team to put together a truly complete game. The Badgers' first five victories of the season all ended up closer than they needed to be. Throughout Bielema's tenure at Wisconsin, the team has gotten off to its share of slow starts in games and has put its fans through plenty of well-documented collapses. On display Saturday were 60 quality minutes of football. It is an encouraging sign for a young team that has every reason to believe it can win its remaining four games, finish 10-2 and play in a very respectable bowl game.

Let's take a look at Saturday's highlights:

The Good

Running game - The Badgers piled up yardage on the ground. John Clay ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns and, once again, the team took full advantage of the end-around. Tight end Lance Kendricks accumulated 91 yards on the ground on such plays, including a 54-yard scamper down the sideline. Overall, the Badgers ran for 266 yards on an impressive 53 carries. It was nice to see Wisconsin set the tone for the game by committing to the ground attack early. The team's opening drive covered 80 yards, none of which came through the air, and resulted in a touchdown.

Freshmen - Wisconsin's freshmen continue to have a remarkably positive impact on this season. Erik Smith and Montee Ball received a combined 14 carries out of the backfield. Curt Phillips got into the game at quarterback, running four times and attempting six passes. Kraig Appleton recorded his first receptions of the season and looked good. David Gilbert blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown. Chris Borland forced and recovered yet another fumble. Gilbert and Borland, in particular, have been big-play guys on defense and on special teams throughout the year.

Secondary - We've been on their case all year, so we better give them the props they earned Saturday. The defensive backs played great football, holding Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott to 5-of-23 passing for 59 yards. Cornerback Devin Smith, who has been up and down this year, recorded a spectacular interception and got a foot down in bounds. He and Chris Maragos both broke up passes. The coverage was simply outstanding all day. Purdue's receivers had an extremely difficult time getting open.

The Bad

Quarterbacks - Scott Tolzien was not asked to do much in this game, putting the ball up only 13 times. Still, he completed just six passes for 87 yards and did not throw a touchdown pass for the third consecutive game. Tolzien did not look nearly as sharp on his passes as he did during the early part of the season, and it's becoming a concern. Curt Phillips did not look much better in garbage time, throwing an interception and only rushing for three yards. While letting Clay and the run game dominate was clearly the right strategy against the second-worst rushing defense in the Big Ten, it does suggest a lack of confidence in the quarterbacks not to ask them to throw more, especially once the game was out of reach. Interestingly enough, one of last year's starters, Dustin Sherer, was a topic of conversation at Bielema's press conference Monday. Sherer is an Indiana native and the Badgers play in Bloomington this week. Bielema reiterated that he thought Sherer would have an opportunity to help Wisconsin win a game at some point this year. With Tolzien's stock plummeting recently and Phillips probably not quite ready, it wouldn't be a shock if Sherer saw action before the season ends.

David Gilreath - Gilreath simply needs to be replaced, or at least complemented, as the main return man. Simply put, he looks lost on the football field this year. He runs laterally way too often, and seems to have no idea whether to call for a fair catch on punts. Bielema said he would use Isaac Anderson at times, but we didn't see him in either role against Purdue. It is tough to single out one guy when the special teams unit has been poor all year, but Philip Welch, Brad Nortman and the coverage team all played adequately Saturday, and Gilreath still struggled.

No Sellout - It is tough to find three negatives after shutting out a Big Ten opponent, but it has to be considered a disappointment that Camp Randall was not sold out Saturday. Even after two losses, the Badgers came into this game 5-2 and Purdue was considered a decent team. Late-October Big Ten games in Madison should always sell out. Period. There are, of course, circumstances to consider, chiefly that many people want nothing to do with the chaos of Madison over Halloween weekend. And, of course, it is nice to know that Camp Randall will be packed to the brim for the Badgers' last home game of the season against Michigan, no matter how far the Wolverines continue to fall.

In anticipation of the christening of the conference season, let's take a look at what's at stake for Big Ten teams in Week 1. Out of conference play may define reputations, but in conference it's all about respect. These are brothers, childhood friends, teammates, and rivals from neighboring towns. Tommorrow, they'll do battle for the honor of the Midwest.

#5: Indiana at Michigan(23)

Favorite: Michigan (18-20 point spread)
Chance of Upset: 5%

A month ago I would have told you that both teams had little more than lower-tier bowl ambitions. That's still the Hoosier's raison de etre. Despite starting the season 3-0, Indiana will need a miracle to get to six wins, with near guaranteed losses against Ohio State, South Florida Indiana, at Northwestern, at Iowa, and at Penn State built into a harrowing schedule. On the other hand, the sky is the limit for Michigan fans, who have exchanged the fantasy of being Outback Bowl Champions, to Rose Bowl Champions. A nice softball conference opener is exactly what the Wolverines need to maintain their momentum.

Who needs it the most? I'm giving this one to the Hoosiers. To reach the coveted 6 wins for bowl eligibility they'll need to win at least one game they're not supposed to. There's no better time to start trying than Saturday.

The Hoosiers will win if... they dominate a wounded Wolverine offensive line. If IU's front seven can slow Michigan's ground game, a more athletic than usual Hoosier secondary might be able to handle the pass attack. Oh yeah, and they've got to score. Lots.

The Wolverines will win if... they show up. No, that's not exactly a rip on Indiana -- it's more of an observation about the storm that's brewing in Ann Arbor. If Michigan can continue to execute consistently, they'll compete for the conference crown.

#4: Illinois at Ohio State(11)

Favorite: Ohio State (14 point spread)
Chance of Upset: 20%

Ohio State was a solid, if not speculative preseason pick to win the conference. After a tepid opening performance against Navy, they dropped to second in our Big Ten Power Poll and they've haven't been able to get a leg up since. Unlike Indiana/Michigan this game is less interesting than it was a month ago. The reason? Illinois continues to blow hot and cold. In its opener against Missouri, a veteran Juice Williams looked more like a freshman than a seasoned signal caller, showing grave passing inconsistencies, and looking like a deer in the headlights behind a questionable shotgun attack. The Illini have won 7 of the past 10 in Columbus, including 3 of the past 4. Yes, you read that right.

Who needs it the most? Illinois. Lose here and you're likely staring down the barrel of a 1-4 start. Do that, and even Detroit will feel far away.

The Illini will win if... they use Juice's mobility when the pocket collapses to connect with lateral targets in space. As USC will tell you there's no pass blocking against the Buckeye front 7. If Illinois can edge out to an early lead, they'll put psychological pressure on Terrelle Pryor. Get him to panic, and the rest is history.

The Buckeyes will win if... they use their shiny new 3-4 defense to disguise pressure, and the defensive line can get to Juice without having to blitz. Terrelle Pryor also needs to continue to use his legs -- as he did last week -- to cover for broken pass plays. Run Pryor, Run!

Columbus has been the Illini's home away from home for the better part of two decades...

#3: Michigan State at Wisconsin

Favorite: Wisconsin (3 point spread)

Chance of Upset: 50%

Wisconsin has rebounded from an absymal 2008 and an offseason full of questions and injuries, to start this season 3-0 out of the gate. They've done it on the arm of Junior Scott Tolzien who wrestled the starting spot from an intemperate Dustin Sherer, and has already thrown for 641 yards and 4 touchdowns. Although they haven't faced as tough of an out of conference slate as the Spartans these Badgers are battle tested, surviving a comeback attempt from Northern Illinois in Week 1 and beating Fresno State in overtime the next week. Michigan State, on the other hand, was picked to challenge the top of the conference, but has stomached two demoralizing last second losses. Are the Spartans the team we thought they were, or the team they always seem to be?

Who needs it the most? Michigan State, no question. Dantonio absolutely needs a quality road win to distinguish this year's crop from the talented, but erratic teams of John L. Smith.

The Spartans will win if... they can take advantage of a lame Badger secondary a la Fresno State's Devon Wiley.

The Badgers will win if... they can get Nick Toon into a shifty Spartan secondary, and use their passing prowess to clear the way for John Clay.

#2: Minnesota at Northwestern

We've debated the merits of this one ad nauseum. Here's Graham's take on why the Wildcats will win, and Jeremy's retort.

Who needs it the most? I'm going to give this one to the road team. Minnesota may well be better than they were in 2008, but a nightmare of a schedule is bound to obscure the distinction. This is a golden opportunity for the Gophers to pick up a notch on the conference road belt.

The Wildcats will win if... they can keep the Golden Gopher attack one dimensional, and if Kafka plays like he did against Syracuse.

The Golden Gophers will win if... their defensive backfield gets up and personal with Northwestern wideouts, and they put up a modest number of points with the velcro glove theatrics of Eric Decker.

And the Big Ten Game of the Week is...

Thanks for one good memory, JLS.

Your MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS vs. the WISCONSIN BADGERS
CAMP RANDALL STADIUM, MADISON, WISCONSIN
NOON, ESPN
WEATHER: 67 DEGREES, 30% CHANCE OF RAIN

Before the season, most observers expected for MSU to struggle offensively, but make up for with defense. Of course, after the last two weeks, that seems like a big lololololololololol, as our defense has put us in a position where we basically have to outscore the opponent. Against two of the better offenses we'll see all season, we failed barely -- but certainly miserably -- to do that. And so here we are, stuck with essentially the worst case scenario: 1-2, with our only win against an FCS team, heading into Camp Randall (where we haven't won since 2001) to play 3-0 Wisconsin. If last week was a big game, this one is now even bigger and more important, as we've obviously done an awful job of padding our record in the OOC schedule, and now have to salvage our season in conference play. Ending the losing streak and getting off on the right foot is incredibly, incredibly important.

But hey, it's cool. We're going to win.

First, let's talk about Wisconsin for a minute. Their three wins have been:

An 8-point home win against a middle-of-the-pack MAC team, Northern Illinois. (I'll admit that this win looks at least a little bit better after NIU took down a corpse-like Purdue team last week.)

A double overtime, 3-point win at home against Fresno State, a team which doesn't exactly play to the level of the David Carr-era vintage any longer.

A blowout against Wofford, an FCS team.

For one thing, I'm completely certain that MSU would have an identical 3-0 record against those teams at this point. Second, if past performance is any indication, Wisconsin's early-season success isn't necessarily going to roll right into the conference season. Remember, they went 3-0 OOC in 2008 before starting 0-4 in Big Ten play. So, anyway, while 3-0 vs. 1-2 certainly impacts upon the general mental state of both teams, I'm equally certain that they tell us very little about which team has been playing better. Furthermore, everything that's written henceforth about Wisconsin comes with the "their OOC schedule is garbage" caveat. Anyway . . .

WHEN MICHIGAN STATE IS ON DEFENSE: Prior to the season, most would have expected Dustin Sherer to start for the Badgers; however, Scott Tolzien won the starting job during the offseason and, by in large, has looked quite good through the first three games. (Sherer is currently third on the depth chart. Bret Bielema: crazy, or crazy like a fox?) Tolzien is currently completing around 70% of his passes:

Rating

Att

Comp

Comp %

TDs

INTs

Long

Yds

YPG

161.83

47

68

69.1

4

2

80

641

213.7

Those numbers include a 281 yard performance against NIU. At the risk of looking through the stereotype lens, it appears that Tolzien is another reasonably-effective game manager, in the mold of every Wisconsin quarterback since, like, ever. Nonetheless, this will be the biggest start of his nascent career; if we can pressure him a bit, that should go a long way toward being successful tomorrow. We were a little better in that regard against Notre Dame; if anything, Wisconsin should be even more reliant than the Irish on 4-and-5 step drops, so the opportunity is there.

Furthermore, as you might have read yesterday, B5Q thinks that we could see a bit of Curt Phillips at quarterback for the Badgers:

But Bielema insists he will use quarterback Curt Phillips if the flow of the game calls for it. Phillips can run – he led the team with 92 rushing yards last week – and if Michigan State has been struggling against spread offenses and wildcat formations, you will probably see the UW offense mix it up a little bit with Phillips at quarterback.

At receiver, the Badgers look a bit like Central Michigan: they feature one big possession-type receiver (Nick Toon) and one little speedburner, presumably from the slot (Isaac Anderson). Toon, whose dad is former Jets wideout Al Toon, is the Badgers' leading receiver with 15 catches for 191 yards and 1 touchdown. However, he doesn't exactly seem like a big-play threat: he's averaging only a shade over 12 yards per catch, and his longest play this year was a 22-yarder. I'd expect for Ross Weaver, who's the bigger and more physical of our corners, to be matched up with Toon most of the game. Anderson, conversely, is the gamebreaker: he has only 7 catches on the season, but those catches have gone for 170 yards (24.3 yards per catch!), including an 80-yard touchdown against NIU.

As you'd might expect, the Badgers heavily involve their tight end in the passing game: Garrett Graham has 11 catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. It's sort of been lost in the shuffle how Kyle Rudolph did a ton of damage against us last week, with 6 catches for 95 yards. We can't afford for Graham to replicate those numbers this week.

Lets' imagine for a minute, that everything before the 4th quarter of last year's Wisconsin game actually happened. (This might be painful.) Probably the single defining characteristic of those three quarters (and the first part of the fourth) was our complete inability to stop Wisconsin's ground game: P.J. Hill ran 20 times for 106 yards, but the contributions of then-freshman John Clay were more devastating: 14 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, and that doesn't include a big touchdown run in the 4th quarter that was called back for holding. (Yes, Badger fans, it was a hold.) P.J. Hill declared "for the NFL" (ha!) but Clay is back -- sort of. He lost the starting job in training camp, then won it back with a 143-yard performance against Fresno State, and then took that opportunity and fumbled it away -- literally -- by coughing the ball up three times against Wofford last week. Clay's replacement, Zach Brown, also fumbled once. Nonetheless, I'm sure Bielema remembers our struggles against Clay last year; I have to believe that he'll be the primary Badger back tomorrow. Clay was highly recruited from high school; he's big (a Caulcrick-like 250 pounds) fast, and tough. Our rush defense wasn't terrible against Notre Dame last week, but an even bigger effort this week certainly wouldn't hurt.

As for our personnel: after being posterized (is this a word in football?) two weeks in a row, Chris L. Rucker, mercifully, won't be getting the start this week; Kendell Davis-Clark is your second cornerback. I like this move both for motivational purposes, and also because something really needed to be done. KDC has been fairly good over the past few years; normally I'd say that there'll be very little drop-off, but there's not too much further down we can go compared to the past two weeks. As far as I know, Trenton Robinson will still start over Danny Fortener.

WHEN MICHIGAN STATE IS ON OFFENSE: Wisconsin's secondary was supposed to be good:

Wisconsin's secondary will be the strength of their defense, returning three out of the four starters including junior cornerback Niles Brinkley (5-10, 180), who had a team-high five interceptions last year, and hard-hitting junior safety Jay Valai (5-9, 200) was a second-team All-Big Ten selection after recording 56 tackles and forcing three fumbles in 2008.

But, happily enough, they kinda, you know, suck!

The cornerbacks look awful. Surprisingly, the front seven looks great and free safety Chris Maragos has been all over the field. Unfortunately he can’t cover three wide receivers at one time and apparently UW’s cornerbacks don’t even have the ability to cover one receiver at a time. Sophomore Aaron Henry, who was supposed to be the conference’s best corner, looks confused out there and Antonio Fenelus, Niles Brinkley and Devin Smith couldn’t cover a 90 year-old man playing wideout. If defensive ends O’Brien Schofield and J.J. Watt don’t have career days, Cousins might throw for four touchdowns.

Fresno State passed for 289 yards against the Badgers, and everything I've read suggests that it may have looked even worse than the statistics indicate. Wisconsin's Scout site suggests that the Badger secondary needs this game for "redemption." I strongly doubt that Kirk Cousins will allow that to happen. One caveat: Wisconsin, led by Schofield and Watt, has been fairly effective in rushing the quarterback so far. They have seven sacks this season; our pass blocking this year has been quite good, but the offensive line will be tested.

As I've said previously, for me, the biggest positive about last week's game was the re-emergence of Mark Dell. If he can keep playing well, I don't think anyone in the conference has a better wide receiver corps than Blair White, Dell, and B.J. Cunningham. Given Wisconsin's difficulties defending the pass against lesser opponents, I think we're going to put up a ton of yards through the air.

The Badgers have also looked somewhat vulnerable against the run: they've allowed 493 yards (and a fairly middling 3.8 ypc) and 4 touchdowns over the first three games. Wisconsin's defensive line doesn't have an Erasmus James-type run swallower this year, but, as always, they're big and physical: DT Jeff Stehle, for instance, is 6'6", 310. Larry Caper's effort against ND probably moved our rushing game off run support; this isn't a great Wisconsin rush defense, but clearly the run game is playing second fiddle in our offense. I'd expect our rush output to be around 125-ish; if we go well above that, we're almost certainly winning. Garrett Celek is back in the lineup for MSU this week; he's good in the passing game, but even more importantly, he's probably the best-blocking tight end we have. It also appears that Nitchman might be able to go, which would be another big boost for the line and the rushing game.

FINAL PREDICTION: I feel very, very good about this game. Wisconsin has looked meh against meh competition, we're desperate, and I like everything I've heard from the team this week. More importantly, I think the Badgers are just a good matchup for our team: I think our passing game is clearly better than their pass defense, and I don't think their passing game is nearly as prepared to take advantage of our glaring weaknesses in the secondary. This game may be frustrating at times, because Wisconsin is going to be able to gain first downs on the ground, but I can't see them landing the knockout blow -- and I certainly can see us doing it. Wisconsin's good at home, but we were oh-so-close to winning there two years ago. This year, we won't fall short. MSU 34, Wisconsin 27.

In partnership with Mid-Major Madness (MMM), SBN's haven for non-BCS coverage, we present to you the top five match-ups between Big Ten and Mid-Major football teams. At number three comes Saturday's showdown between Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

Make sure to go back and submit your picks for the Obligatory Predictions Contest. Every weekly winner gets the right to write 500 words on the site about college football. NEW this year is our season long competition - win the whole damn thing and we send you something amazing.

The favored Badgers have played musical chairs with their starters, while Northern Illinois will comes out inexperienced but featuring a star quarterback. Can the Big Ten's 3rd best program of the last 10 years make a run this year? Will Student Body Sweep Right crush the Huskies?

Hype

MMM: When Jerry Kill took over the NIU football program after the 2007 season it looked as if he was going to have to spend at least a few seasons rebuilding the team. After the Huskies finished with an abysmal 2-10 record in 2007, Kill’s team made surprising progress in 2008 with a .500 regular season winning percentage and an invitation to the Independence Bowl. Kill looks to continue with his rebuilding efforts as he enters his 2nd year as head coach of the Huskies.

However, 2009 might be a bit more difficult as he loses 20 seniors from last years roster including the MAC MVP and the 16th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Larry English. Along with English, the Huskies lost 5 receivers that accounted for 83% of the teams catches. The team will need someone from the incoming freshman class to step up and become a playmaker.

With such a young and inexperienced team it will be very difficult to go into Madison, one of college footballs biggest stages, and come out with the victory against the Badgers.

TRE: What in the world happened in Madison? The entire state will be watching the Badger's backfield, as heralded RB John Clay has been passed on the depth chart by Zach Brown and preseason starting QB Dustin Sherer has been replaced by Scott Tolzien and frosh Curt Phillips. Clay will play big minutes, but the concept is clear - Coach Bielema is winning at all costs and doesn't give a damn if that means changing leaders one week before the season.

Countdown Games

#5 - Wisconsin v. Fresno State

#4 - Purdue v. Northern Illinois

Key Matchup

Huskies Red Zone Offense vs. Badgers Defense

MMM: In 2008, the Huskies seemed to always have found a way to screw up every possession in which they were within the coveted boundaries of the Red Zone. Quarterback Chandler Harnish failed in attempt after attempt, causing Kill to rely on his kicker Mike Salerno to put points on the board. Kill has worked to address the issue during camp and feels confident in his QB, although they still lack the go-to guy that they can rely on to put 6 points on the board.

Harnish is unquestionably their best shot at an X-factor , with the quick feet necessary to pick up yardage on the ground. A lot of Harnish’s struggles in 2008 was due to his inexperience, but this year he really needs to show the coaching staff that he can step up and make the big plays and what better way to do so than against then against a Big Ten powerhouse. With such a young supporting cast it will be very interesting to see if Harnish has what it takes to put points on the board and take some stress off Salerno.

TRE: It looks like MMM has been doing his research. The Huskies run game has been potent for years and matches up extremely well with Wisconsin's depleted defensive line. The Badgers lost DE's Mike Newkirk and Matt Shaughnessy to graduation, making it their most vulnerable defensive position. If Northern Illinois makes it inside the 20, they should pound the rock with quarterback runs (Harnish is almost 220 lbs) and draws to smallish playmaker Me'Co Brown.

Significance

MMM: As mentioned earlier, this is NIU head coach Jerry Kill’s second season and although he did a tremendous job at turning the team around in 2008, he needs to prove that last year wasn’t just some aberration. Last year he had a team with a mix of not only the players he recruited, but also the players that signed on to play under former head coach Joe Novak. Now that Kill has 24 of his own recruits coming in can really showcase his coaching ability. There is no question that they will be a very young and inexperienced team but they are talented nonetheless.

Kill will be in the spotlight week one against the Badgers in easily one of NIU’s biggest games of the season. If the Huskies can go in and steal the win, it will not only start the season off on the right track but also show NIU boosters and fans that Kill is the real deal.

TRE: The Wisconsin preseason preview is littered with cliches. Bielema is always on the " hot seat" and every OOC game is a "must win." But much of the time, cliches exist to wipe out the need for long, complicated explanations. And in Madison, these overused cliches might ring true. The Wisconsin "system," which consists of a strong run game, hard-hitting defense, and the ability to draw other teams into slugfests, didn't work so well last year. Bielema can take steps to prove '08 was an aberration with a thumping of the Huskies.

Predictions

MMM: The Badgers face another quarterback decision coming into the 2009 season. It seems that the past three years the Badgers have face the same issue over and over again, which is probably the main reason behind their mediocre play. Regardless, the Badgers have veteran players that the Huskies seem to lack. The youthfulness of the Huskies will be a major issue and will most definitely lead to careless turnovers and blown coverages. Wisconsin 31, Northern Illinois 17.

TRE: Preparation is the keyword for the Badgers. They were caught unprepared against numerous opponents (Cal Poly, Florida State, Iowa) in 2008. Bielema has had the entire off-season to put together some kind of gameplan and one has to believe he'll have the Badgers jacked up for Redemption Year '09. Right? Wisconsin 34, Northern Illinois 20.

Stepping away from our own matchup, it is time to take a larger view. The Rivalry Esq. was kind enough to release the Big Ten Power Poll this morning, but the news is not good as we are most assuredly at the bottom of the list. Well, there is nowhere else to go but up. The journey begins this week.

Here is a quick look at what everyone else is doing this week. The Big Ten is a heavy favorite in nearly every game. Only the Missouri-Illinois contest should be close, but I think there will be a few surprises in store for some teams.

Thursday night:

Eastern Kentucky (0-0) at Indiana (0-0) 8pm Big Ten Network

Crimson Quarry Preview

In a strange twist, Indiana begins its season against Danny Hope's old team and ends it against his new team, both in Bloomington. As John points out, this may not be the typical Big Ten over 1-AA romp. Indiana has struggled in such games recently, while Eastern Kentucky is one of the better 1-AA teams out there. They made the lower division playoffs last season, but have never beaten a 1-A team. To me, this is not a good sign that Indiana is actually worried somewhat about losing this game. I still expect a Hoosier win like everyone else, but a loss would be disastrous. This is especially true since they are the only game in town on this night. Indiana 38, Eastern Kentucky 17

Saturday:

Toledo (0-0) at Purdue (0-0) Noon Big Ten Network

All that needed to be said was said yesterday in my preview and in the podcast with Boilerdowd and J Money. If we lose this game we have no right to win another one this year. I think the Boilers surprise with an easier-than-expected win thanks to an improved defense. Purdue 31, Toledo 13

Towson (0-0) at Northwestern (0-0) Noon Big Ten Network

Lake the Posts Preview

If this were lacrosse, Northwestern would be in trouble. The Tigers are an east coast power in the sport. Unfortunately, this is football. Even Northwestern is not immune to the 1-AA cupcake to start the year. Northwestern 42, Towson 7

Montana State (0-0) at Michigan State (0-0) Noon Big Ten Network

The Enlightened Spartan Preview

As the ES points out, Michigan State is favored by 41 over Joe Tiller's alma mater and has never played a 1-AA team. That tells us all we need to know as Kirk Cousins gets the start for an ongoing QB derby. Of course, the last time a team from the state of Michigan played a 1-AA team for the first time... Michigan State 52, Montana State 10

Minnesota (0-0) at Syracuse (0-0) Noon ESPN2

The Daily Gopher Preview

It is ironic that Minnesota opens the season at Syracuse. The Gophers are making a big deal about moving into their new on campus outdoor stadium after years in the Metrodome. Before that, they must play at one of just two Division 1-A teams (the other being Idaho) that plays in its own on campus domed stadium. Syracuse gets honorary Big Ten status this year, playing three Big Ten teams. They have struggled in recent years against the conference this decade. They won at Illinois in 2006, but are 1-6 against the conference this decade including a 51-0 loss to us in 2004. With a new coach and QB they are unproven, so who knows what may happen at home. Minnesota 24, Syracuse 14

Navy (0-0) at #6 Ohio State (0-0) Noon ESPN

We Will Always Have Tempe Preview

I like the movement to have Ohio State fans cheer for navy as they come into the Horseshoe. It is a high class move and proves that the Big Ten is high class all the way. Navy's triple option makes this game very interesting as well. It is something unique that is very hard for even the most disciplined of teams to defend. If they can control the clock and keep the Buckeye offense off the field, who knows. This is not the typical early season opponent Ohio State can sleepwalk past like Ohio. It just feels like one of those wins that should be bigger than it is. Ohio State 30, Navy 14

Akron (0-0) at #9 Penn State (0-0) Noon Big Ten Network

Happy Hour Valley Preview

Now here is a Big Ten team getting its proper respect against a crappy MAC team. Of course, a large reason for that is that Penn State was 11-2 last year and went to the Rose Bowl while we were 4-8. Still, this shouldn't even be a contest. After winning the MAC in 2005, Akron has done next to nothing. Penn State 45, Akron 10

Northern Iowa (0-0) at #22 Iowa (0-0) 12:05pm Big Ten Network

Black Heart Gold Pants preview

The Jewel Hampton loss is huge. Hampton dominated here at Warren Central in the Indy area, but those days are over now. He was needed to replace Shonn Greene and now Iowa must look elsewhere. It won't matter much this week, but Northern Iowa could be a little feisty. The Panthers are one of the better 1-AA teams year in and year out, so if there is the potential out there for an Appalachian State-like game this is it. Iowa 31, Northern Iowa 13

Western Michigan (0-0) at Michigan (0-0) 3:30pm ABC

Maize N' brew preview

It is not a good thing that Michigan is facing a quality MAC team that already has a Big Ten pelt from last year (thanks, Illinois) and most of the focus is on off the field issues. The more I think about it, the more I hate Rich Rodriguez every day. A trained ape should have been able to coach Michigan to a bowl game last year, and he had the worst season in school history. They need to watch out for Tim Hiller, who is your typical very underrated MAC quarterback that could play for anyone in the Big Ten. I think the Broncos pull off the upset and the fans begin lighting torches and grabbing pitchforks in Ann Arbor. That's okay though. We're all behind you 100%, Michigan, in week 2. Western Michigan 24, Michigan 17

Missouri (0-0) vs. Illinois (0-0) at St. Louis 3:40pm ESPN

Hail to the Orange Preview

Yeah, Illinois should be able to score a bunch of points this year, but they cannot stop from turning the ball over and Missouri has scored at will since this series started back up. The last two games in this series have been fun shootouts with the Tigers winning 40-34 and 52-42. Missouri no longer has Chase Daniel, but the talent level has been upgraded enough to survive his loss. I am still not sold on Illinois until they stop throwing interceptions. That will be their undoing here. Missouri 45, Illinois 38

Northern Illinois (0-0) at Wisconsin (0-0) 7pm Big Ten Network

Bucky's 5th Quarter Preview

Many people think that this year's big MAC over Big Ten win will be in two weeks when the Huskies come to Ross-Ade. If Northern Illinois is as good as some expect they absolutely can beat a Badger team that is in a bit of flux. If this were a day game at Camp Randall I would be tempted to pick the upset. Wisconsin is just too good after dark at home though. I think Dustin Sherer settles in as your typical Wisconsin senior quarterback and gets the job done. This will be a good game to keep an eye on Saturday night, as it is the only game this week where we get to watch two future opponents face each other. Wisconsin 24, Northern Illinois 10

In my introductory post a few days ago, I wrote about my favorite Big 10 team and current school, Northwestern. Before I bled purple, though, there was another team that I pledged my loyalty to, namely, the Wisconsin Badgers. While I never attended the University of Wisconsin, my family ties to the University and the great dairy state as well as my love of beer, sausage, and all things Bucky naturally made them my adopted team back when I was just a wee little Chicagoan. Even though I am now at Northwestern, I still retain my fandom of the Badgers and am happy to be writing about them for The Rivalry, Esq.

Last year was, frankly, a disappointing season for Badgers football. The 9 win 2007 season had been quite thrilling, despite the heartbreaking bowl loss to the Volunteers. The 2008 campaign started well, with the Badgers going 3-0 before sloppy play doomed them against an easily beatable Michigan team. That seemed to take the air out of the Badger's sails and they followed it up with a complete failure of late-game play against OSU and crushing defeats to the Nittany Lions and the Hawkeyes. While they eventually finished over .500, the predictable bowl loss to FSU served as a capstone to the underwhelming season.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that 2009 will be much better.

Make sure to go back and submit your picks for the Obligatory Predictions Contest. Every weekly winner gets the right to write 500 words on the site about college football. NEW this year is our season long competition - win the whole damn thing and we send you something amazing.

In some ways, Wisconsin is in the exact opposite situation that Northwestern is. Most of Wisconsin's defense is gone, while the offense will remain relatively consistent. What changes that are made on the offense look to be positive ones - QB Scott Tolzien will be starting over Dustin Sherer, which looks to be an improvement. While P.J. Hill is gone to the NFL, Zach Brown and John Clay look to split carries and should be more than adequate in their duties. The emergence of Nick Toon at receiver could also be helpful to the Badgers game.

Still, questions remain about this team. A large proportion of the starters and backups are either sophomores or freshman, which suggests an amount of uncertainty is in store this year. There is also the matter of the head coach. Was Bielema's 12-1 rookie season a reflection of his abilities as a coach, or a fluke powered by players who had been recruited by Alvarez? If the answer is the former then last year was just a down year and the Badgers should return to football glory. If it's the alternative... well, it's best not to think about where that would leave Wisconsin come this January.

Though I may be spending my Saturday afternoons in a rival stadium, I will still be following my Badgers and will have many thoughts to share as this season progresses.

On Wisconsin!

College football's smartest picks contest.

You might have heard, we at The Rivalry, Esq. are not above the sort of self-declared polity that comes with crowning ourselves psychic masters of the college football universe and certifying our predictions each week. Then again, you're not either.

It's back...The 2009 Obligatory Predictions Competition.

This is how we do it. Each week we select five interesting match-ups and predict the outcome. If you don't buy our "expert" opinions, or think you can do better -- enter your picks for all five games in the comments section of the article at least an hour before kickoff (EST) of the first match in question. At the end of the week we'll tally the score and declare a winner. The weekly winner gets to write 500 words on the site about anything college football.

But that's not all.

in 2009...

Season Scoreboard. This is no longer just a temporary thing. Each time you earn points, we'll carry them over to the next week in a season-long race to the top. (Sure, this means you'll probably want to try to play each round. But don't sweat it if you miss a few. We'll still crown weekly winners -- so you can defend your fanhood).

Here's how to run up the score:

One (1) point is earned for a correctly picking the winning team.

If you pick the winning team, earn an additional two (2) points for correctly identifying the winning spread by seven points or less.

If you pick the winning team, earn an additional two (2) points for picking a perfect spread (i.e. The PATERNOSGRANDDAUGHTER Bonus)

Two (2) bonus points are awarded for the "upset pick" -- an upset being defined as predicting: 1. Any AP/BCS Top 25 ranked team to defeat any opponent of higher rank, which in fact does occur, or 2. Any non-ranked AP/BCS Top 25 team to defeat any ranked opponent, which in fact does occur.

Without further adieu, here are our Week 1 Predictions:

1. No. 13 GEORGIA at No. 9 OKLAHOMA STATE, 3:30 p.m. EST (9/5), ABC

GRAHAMFILLER10 predicts OKLAHOMA STATE by 10

You want me to pick OSU because of their returning weapons and the homefield advantage. You want me to pick OSU because Joe Cox throws an ugly ball and doesn’t have oodles of experience. You want me to pick OSU because no one else will and you think I’m an idiot to believe in a Big 12 team with no defense (is there any other kind of Big 12 team?). You win.

LAW BUCKEYE predicts OKLAHOMA STATE by 7

This is the hardest game of the week to predict, and we're not wasting any time by tackling it first. On one hand, Georgia is without perhaps their two most recognizable playmakers of the last decade (Stafford/Moreno). On the other, I have trouble shaking my belief that the Big 12 South is a one-dimensional mirage: high octane offenses propped up by abysmally poor defenses.

I think the Cowboys are the exception to the rule, and I think that because running back Kendall Hunter, wide receiver Dez Bryant, and quarterback Zac Robinson will score enough points to make up for a shaky defensive backfield. The Bulldogs will score too, behind one of the best offensive lines in the country and a stable of backs, but they won't be able to keep up on a pistol whip of a trip outside conference lines.

2. WESTERN MICHIGAN at MICHIGAN, 3:30 p.m. EST (9/5), ABC

GRAHAMFILLER10 predicts MICHIGAN by 7

Oh boy. I envision Michigan struggling early on offense and watching in shock as Tim Hiller drives the Bronco’s down the field methodically for an early touchdown. I also envision the Bronco’s hurdling themselves at Forcier and praying he gets nicked early, if only to get Nick Sheridan on the field as fast as possible. Yes it’s true – Michigan’s 4 star defensive recruits should overwhelm Western in the Big House. But the Wolverines are facing tremendous pressure to win this game. Go Blue...

LAW BUCKEYE predicts MICHIGAN by 14

Two years in a row the Wolverines have tanked in their opener. Let's just say the third time will be a charm for an embattled Rich Rodriguez and a much-improved squad. I see a vaunted spread offense that clicks against a Bronco defense that returns just three starters and an unripe secondary. Meanwhile, Obi Ezeh and Brandon Graham -- stars under the tutelage of Greg Robinson -- will anchor a stronger, more consistent 3-4 defense.

Still, Michigan fans shouldn't breathe a sigh of relief. The true test for the Wolverines remains a week away when Charlie Weis comes to town.

For awhile, I’ve had a problem with that T-Pain/Jamie Foxx song "Blame It." I love it, but there’s one line that says Blame it on the Jews and I just felt that was inappropriate. That wonderful culture/people shouldn’t be blamed for your muddled one-night stands. Anyways, I’ve been informed that it’s actually a reference to the Illini’s struggles last year. Apparently T-Pain attended school in Champagne-Urbana and believes JUICE Williams was the cause of last year’s problems. Well Phil Steele and I both believe Williams and Co will improve this year. This turnaround starts against the Tigers from Mizzou. (Sorry Mary Schultz!)

LAW BUCKEYE predicts ILLINOIS by 10

Don't let the absence of rankings fool you. This St. Louis showdown is a huge game for Illinois and the conference. Mighty Mizzou has firebombed Ron Zook two years in a row. It's time for some revenge. Star Tigers linebacker Sean Witherspoon has promised to "squeeze the pulp out of Juice [Williams]." He might get a few good licks in, but this game belongs to the stronger, more disciplined Illini. Talented, but virgin quarterback Blaine Gabbert will struggle early to synchronize Gary Pinkel's signature offense. Arrelious Benn will eat Missouri's shoe-string secondary alive.

The Badgers, starting a non-Dustin Sherer quarterback and a non-John Clay running back, will lean on the Huskies until they fall over. Every year, there's a team that can't contain the Badgers rushing attack and ends up surrendering about 400 yards on the ground. This won’t quite be that game, but Bielema wins convincingly. Watch for Chandler Harnisch though – he’s the MAC’s Jake Locker, complete with Melrose Place sounding name. He proved this in 2008 as A FRESHMAN. Is he the next Dan Lefevour or Tim Hiller, MAC quarterbacks sure to get NFL hype?

This is the matchup of the week. Roll Tide Roll says:

Of course the easy answer -- and in all fairness, perhaps even the correct answer for 2009 -- is that we will try to replicate the basic strategy employed a year ago: physically dominate our opponents in the trenches in the running game, run it right down their throats, and only throw the football when and where we want to. But the problem with that is that there is no guarantee that the pre-requisites needed.

I have enough faith in that gigantic defense residing in Tuscaloosa to believe the Tide can triumph over a Darren Evans lacking VT team.
The Hokies deserve to be here, they just will fall a little short.

Big Ten Quarterback Battles: Starters and Analysis

While the apocalyptic "3 qb's" statement from RichRod threw the blogosphere into a tizzy (MGo discusses the situation here), it's been a relatively quiet offseason for the Big Ten's signalcallers. So here's a quick look at the QB positions that are still being battled over.

Wisconsin

Presumed Starter in Spring: Dustin Sherer, he of the unimpressive mechanics and loopy throwing motion, got good gametime experience in 2008 and was the expected starter for the 2009 Badgers. Questions remained whether he could fill the shoes of proven winners like Tyler Donovan or John Stocco, but the backups were young or uninspiring.

Presumed Starter NOW: Curt Phillips. The redshirt frosh has been taking the majority of snaps at practice and numerous blogs have reported that he will start. Although inexperienced, Phillips has impressed the coaches with his legs and his maturity.

What does it all mean? This job was Sherer's to lose and apparently, he may have taken steps to do just that. His throwing was unimpressive during the Spring Game and no one has really come to his defense. However, 12 days remain until the opener and no official statement has been made by Bielema. My opinion? Start Phillips. The Badgers are at their best with a mobile quarterback who doesn't lose games by himself. Sherer doesn't fit either of those criteria.

Michigan

Presumed Starter in Spring: Tate Forcier. The frosh with unimpressive mechanics was impressive in the Spring Game and has wowed everyone with his maturity...in practice. Nick Sheridan, the rock skipper whose nickname should be "Third and Long Fail," was injured and fell off the radar while incoming frosh Denard Robinson had not arrived in the Spring.

Presumed Starter NOW: Forcier. The coaching staff is making non-committal "coachspeak" comments and we should follow MGo and the rest of the Michigan blogosphere in maintaining that Forcier's talent level and time spent with the system is enough to give him the starting job.

What does it all mean? Robinson will make it on the field somehow and will break someones ankles horribly. Whether he plays quarterback or wide receiver, he'll be on the field. Sheridan should not touch the field, if only to maintain the sanity of the Michigan faithful. Unless his talent and game management ability has somehow grown exponentially over the last four months, there is no reason for him to play over Forcier.

Michigan State

Presumed Starter in Spring: None. Keith Nichol and Kirk Cousins were both figured to be 1a and 1b.

Presumed Starter NOW: Ugh. Cousins has more experience and a more accurate arm, Nichol has more raw talent. Cousins was better in the latest scrimmage, but no one will give an inch to the media and actually discuss the depth chart. The Only Colors has no ideas, Joe Rexrode of the LSJ has no ideas...you get the idea. The MSU faithful are also torn on who they would rather have leading the offense onto the field.

What does it all mean? Cousins should start. The Michigan State offense deserves more of a dropback passer like Cousins. But I've heard of worse things than having two talented quarterbacks fight for a starting job.

Explanation and indemnifications found: here

For as much press as the "Rodriguez is on the hot seat" concept has gotten this off season, in my e-pinion, it's Bret Bielema who might be running short on rope. Entering the Michigan game last season, Wisconsin was 3-0, and the number 9 team in the country. The admittedly fluky and...well...weird loss at Michigan set Wisconsin into a downright Sparty-esque tailspin, and they lost the next 4 consecutive games. By the time they regrouped to win the last three (one against Cal Poly in OT), the team had already massively underachieved. A loss to Florida State in the Champs Sports bowl capped a 7-6 season in which only 3 Big Ten games were won.

This isn't meant to be a "slam Wisconsin" type preview, but last season, with PJ Hill and Allan Evridge returning, the expectations were pretty high in Madison; expectations that were not met. Looking to atone for that, Dustin Sherer returns after going 4-3 as Evridge's replacement last season. John Clay, a sophomore, will take over the tailback duties. However, the offense returns only 6 starters, while the defense returns just 5. They are young, and might be due for a rebuilding-type year that I'm not sure Bielema has room for.

One thing the media will harp on that is off base

The defense is young and suspect, but to me that's not the biggest concern for this team. Despite the fact that Dustin Sherer is a returning starter (of sorts) his number don't point to being anything other than pedestrian.

That's not the most consistent stat line from what figures to be your starting quarterback. Add on to this the fact that Bielema isn't 100% sold on Sherer, and you've got a quarterback situation that could see a marginal but experienced starter being replaced by a young but maybe more athletic backup. Meanwhile, the offense is going to have to put some points on the board because, as mentioned previously, the defense is young and will take some time to get things together. O'Brien Schofield returns as a senior at Defensive End, but the other 3 members of the defensive line are getting their first starts this year. At linebacker, the team returns leading tackler Jaevery McFadden, and Culmer St. Jean and Blake Sorensen are seem to be serviceable. Both juniors were 3-star types with St. Jean being perhaps a little more athletic. The quarterback situation is never going to be solved this year; but it could implode given the right situation. In that case, this Wisconsin team is probably not going to be able to lean on their defense against the top-level teams in the Big Ten.

One thing the media will completely ignore that is integral to this team's success:

John Clay

There are two things here that I feel will be extremely beneficial for this Wisconsin team. First, the schedule sets up nicely with 4 games at home to start, including the Big Ten opener against Michigan State. Fresno State may be a test for this young team, but they could easily start the season at 3-0 and roll into conference play with some confidence. They travel to Ohio State, but miss Penn State this season. If you're going to have a rebuilding year, it's nice to have the majority of your tough games at home and miss a team projected to battle for the conference championship.

Second, the secondary is actually pretty experienced, returning both safeties and one corner. Also, cornerback Aaron Henry returns after missing the entirety of last season with an ACL injury. If Wisconsin can go on one of those crazy turn-over fueled runs ala Minnesota a few years back, they could sneak into contention for the Big Ten.

Most important contributors on each side of the ball:

Offensively, Wisconsin features, once again, a huge white-guy-farm-bred type offensive line anchored by left tackle Gave Carimi. John Moffitt, a junior, also returns at center. John Clay might be the scariest running back in the league, and the combination of blocking and running might allow Wisconsin to lead the conference in rushing like they did last year.

Defensively, it's going to be that secondary, particularly Niles Brinkley who led the team in INT's last year.

Area that scares you as Michigan Wolverines:

Wisconsin's ground attack will again be the team's strength. The good news is that they're definitely just going to throw rock. The bad news is that they throw it harder, stronger, and with more dairy than any other team in the Big Ten. If they start rolling on the ground, any QB concerns will be a moot point.

Area that makes you salivate as the Michigan Wolverines:

A young-ish front seven against a complicated spread n' shred attack will be fun to watch. The game this year is at camp Randall, which is always tough, but will be played November 14th. By this time, hopefully, the offense will be at as full of capacity as it's going to get. Provided there are no injuries, Wisconsin will catch the Michigan offense, hopefully (again! say it with me! hopefully!), at its peak.

Overall Record:

7-5

Final Big Ten Standing:

5th

Bowl Destination

I can't seem to keep this stuff straight...where does the 5th place Big Ten team go? Citrus Jr. Was the Citrus ever big enough to warrant a son? Who did it mate with? Will Citrus Jr. ever leave the nest of Orlando and settle in, like, San Francisco?

I smell a sit-com.
