Alright, back from a slow weekend with a monster set of links...really, I probably should have just broken this into about three posts, but oh well...today, we put Nebraska in the rearview and look toward a hobbled, humbled, inexperienced, explosive OSU team...but first, in my best Randy Wright P.A. voice, "JEREMY. The Trib: Tigers look for hangover cure

Missouri has its own problems to tackle this week, starting with a plodding offense that struggled to overcome its own self-inflicted setbacks against Nebraska. Yes, the monsoon-like conditions created their share of problems. And yes, quarterback Blaine Gabbert was gimpy with a sprained right ankle most of the game. But against a Cornhuskers defense they shredded for 1,068 yards the last two years, Missouri mustered only two scores on 16 possessions. The Tigers’ 225 yards of offense marked their fewest since a 13-3 loss at Kansas in 2005, when Brad Smith’s offense generated just 180 yards.

Stagnant running, inaccurate passing and a rash of penalties, including four holds by offensive linemen, repeatedly put the offense in unmanageable scenarios. On 15 of the Tigers’ 78 offensive snaps, they needed to pick up 12 yards or more for the first down. Twelve of those plays started at least 20 yards away from the first-down marker, including eight in the first quarter alone.

“Going into this game, I thought we were pretty disciplined,” Pinkel said. “We were the least-penalized team in the league. Obviously, we didn’t do a very good job today.”

While Toston has always been pegged as an ideal complementary back, plugged into the role as OSU’s every down back of late, he’s thriving.

At A&M, Toston ran tough and ran well, also providing 74 yards receiving on two big screen passes. He’s always carried great value, with his 1,917 career rushing yards ranking No. 19 all-time at OSU. Not bad for a career backup.

Up next for MU is a trip to Stillwater this Saturday to take on No. 16 Oklahoma State at 8:15 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. Then comes a home game against No. 3 Texas the following week.

Already one game behind Nebraska for the Big 12 North lead, the Tigers can’t afford many more losses in their battle to play in the Big 12 Championship.

Michael Keck leaves Mizzou football program

Dave Matter, Gabe Dearmond and others have confirmed yesterday's rumor--RSFr Michael Keck has quit the football team for "personal reasons". From most accounts, it appears that it was just a case of "this isn't as easy as it used to be". Maybe there's more to it than that, maybe not. I wish him well.

In all, this appears to be a "hurts our depth" problem more than a "hurts our immediate product on the field" problem. Keck seemed competent out there, but he wasn't a big playmaker, and true freshman Jacquies Smith seemed to have already surpassed him for PT. It hurts because you always want the big-time in-state kids to succeed here so that other big-time in-state kids see them succeeding, but I can't get myself too worked up about this one. Defensive End is a position of decent young depth for Mizzou, so we should be okay there. Next year we'll be choosing a starter from a pool of Jacquies Smith, Brian Coulter, Marcus Malbrough, Chris Earnhardt, Aldon Smith, and whatever other recruits we sign (Sheldon Richardson, etc.). No matter what, there will probably be a dropoff from what we're accustomed to this year--Stryker Sulak and Tommy "Perpetually Underrated" Chavis have served us quite well, and Keck was not going to change that whether he was in uniform or not. But again, I wish him well.
