Browns' Reporters Survive Shurmur/Jauron/Childress Extravaganza Of Mundane

On Thursday, the Cleveland Browns met with the media for a press conference following the team's morning practice. It was a treat for the media - all of Pat Shurmur, Dick Jauron and Brad Childress spoke to important, hard-hitting issues with the team. Among the things addressed were comments from Cincinnati's Rey Maualuga on running back Trent Richardson, Mike Holmgren's comb-over and 10 reasons why Colt McCoy won't be the starting quarterback.

No wait, those would be interesting topics of discussion. Instead, Shurmur had "no reaction" to the Maualuga comments, the comb-over wasn't even discussed, and all we know is that Brandon Weeden is the guy going forward. The three combined for a press conference in which virtually nothing of substance was actually discussed. The only worthwhile thing we got was a quote from Childress (surprise) about ... smelly armpits, or something along those lines. Make the jump for the Tweet.

So in other words, the Browns stink. They missed their once-a-week laundry day and the gym shorts are pretty rancid following Sunday's close loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Right now, everything is being questioned and that's all thanks to the fact that the team is 0-1 instead of 1-0. Change just one play from that game and the Browns escape with a narrow victory, and things are much better in Cleveland.

They'll hope to apply a fresh coat of Right Guard with a win over the Bengals in Week 2.

Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden Among Top 5 In NFL Rookie Jersey Sales

Though Brandon Weeden had an NFL debut to forget in Week 1, he's still selling jerseys. Weeden is No. 5 in jersey sales among NFL rookies so far in 2012, which is pretty remarkable, given his age and poor Week 1 performance.

As expected, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are No. 1 and No. 2 in jersey sales among NFL rookies. Luck's debut wasn't so hot in Week 1, but RG3 certainly lit it up, leading the Washington Redskins to a road win over the New Orleans Saints.

Trent Richardson, another Browns rookie, is No. 3 in rookie jersey sales. Richardson, like Weeden, will hope for a better Week 2, to help boost those sales even further.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly is fourth, between the two Browns rookies.

As the folks at Waiting for Next Year point out, it's remarkable that Weeden is trending upward after his performance in Week 1. Hopefully for his sake, and Cleveland's, his jersey sales will trend even higher with improved play.

Brandon Weeden Begins NFL Debut Against Eagles By Getting Trapped Under American Flag

Quarterback Brandon Weeden had one of the worst games in the history of the Browns franchise during his debut on Sunday against the Eagles. The 28-year-old rookie finished the game 12 of 35 for 118 yards and four brutal interceptions. It all led to a quarterback rating of 5.1 -- one of the lowest in the history of the league.

Of course, this abominable showing was all foreshadowed before the game even started when Weeden got stuck under the giant American flag they unfurl across the field for the National Anthem. Weeden was trapped under it for several moments. Just another opening day on the Lake. Only in the Cleveland. Video of the mishap after the jump:

VIDEO: Browns Can't Finish Off Eagles

The Browns put themselves in prime position top pull off the upset on Sunday, but persistent mistakes by the offense and Brandon Weeden kept the Eagles in the game. Michael Vick finally pushed Philadelphia ahead with just over a minute to play when he found Clay Harbor for a short touchdown on the right side. The Browns had the final possession to attempt a drive for a game-winning field goal, but it promptly came to an end when Weeden sailed another pass for his fourth pick of the game.

It was the 13th time in 14 games since the Browns return in 1999 that they lost the home opener. SB Nation Studios and Amy K. Nelson recapped the the ugly but close finish on Sunday. Video after the jump:

Brandon Weeden Is Better Than You At Sports

With the NFL season kicking off this week, every major media outlet is airing football-themed segments, including the Golf Channel. Todd Lewis visited with Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden to talk about his winding career path through the baseball minor leagues to Oklahoma State to Cleveland (you can watch the video here). Weeden's baseball gifts, while not big-league level, were already well-known. But the spot on Golf Channel shed some light on another sport where he's become well above-average.

In college, Weeden was asked to join the Cowboys golf team. OSU has perhaps the strongest program in the country, consistently boasting the top recruits and sending players onto the PGA Tour (such as Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan). Weeden never played in the top five on the team, but just being good enough for consideration is better than 95 percent of golfers in the world. It's still an amazing accomplishment, especially considering Weeden never picked up a club until late in his life. He claims that he shot an 89 the first time ever played -- a pretty unbelievable score for someone out there chopping it up on their first loop through. Comparable results for his first ever NFL game would be a welcome sight.

Colt McCoy Seems Unhappy That Brandon Weeden Was Named Cleveland's Starter

On Monday, the Cleveland Browns announced that Brandon Weeden, not Colt McCoy, will be the starting quarterback this year -- even before either quarterback took a snap during preseason play.

McCoy, as you'd expect, isn't too happy about the hasty decision from Cleveland's coaching staff.

It's tough to blame McCoy, as the Browns essentially didn't even feign interest in holding a legitimate quarterback competition.

McCoy, who turns 26 in September, appeared in 13 games for the Browns last season, completing 52.7% of his passes, and only averaging 5.90 yards per attempt. McCoy threw 14 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions -- and five fumbles.

Weeden was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, so it's not too surprising that the Browns had Weeden in mind all along. Still, competition wouldn't have hurt either player.

RGIII Has An Overall 83 Rating In Madden NFL 13

For a certain subsection of Americans, August 28 shall this year be known as "Madden Day," when EA Sports' latest edition of the video game franchise is released to the public.

To further whip up excitement, EA released the full ratings for all of the game's quarterbacks. (How'd you like to be Ryan Perrilloux after seeing that list?). Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, who hasn't played even a preseason game yet, has an overall rating of 83. For context, this puts him level with Andy Dalton and Alex Smith, just behind Carson Palmer and Andrew Luck, and just ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Freeman.

For even more context, RGIII's speed rating is 93, the highest of any quarterback on the list (just ahead of Michael Vick), his throw power rating is 95, and his deep accuracy rating is 88. Griffin's lowest score by far comes in Awareness (58, behind Luck, but ahead of Jake Locker and Brandon Weeden and way ahead of Ryan Tannehill and Ryan Mallet).

So, now we know how RGIII would perform in virtual reality. Finding out the real thing begins in six days.

Browns Dead Last In 1st Set Of 2012 SB Nation Power Rankings

The Browns begin training camp Tuesday night, with some rookies and veterans reporting in Berea and full practices beginning this weekend. Trent Richardson is now in the fold and Brandon Weeden's deal should be finalized in the next two days. With camps kicking up all around the league, SB Nation put together the season's first power rankings, according to our network of NFL blogs.

And based on the first set of rankings, there's only one way for the Browns to go! Cleveland comes in dead last at No. 32, while their division rivals are ranked No. 16 (Bengals), No. 7 (Steelers), and No. 6 (Ravens). More on the Browns ranking after the jump:

Although Cleveland's offense was unbearable in 2011, they could turn heads early on in the season. The talent they have on the offensive line might be the best kept secret in the league. That could mean top-notch protection for rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden, and some nice lanes for running back Trent Richardson, who will be featured heavily.

Cleveland's defense played at a high level last year, but is the addition of Frostee Rucker at defensive end enough to drastically improve the team's run defense?

Amy K. Nelson Interviews Browns Rookie Brandon Weeden

SB Nation Studios has been doing interviews of various rookies around the NFL during rookie weekend in Los Angeles, and on Monday they got to Cleveland Browns rookie Brandon Weeden.

The 22nd overall pick was interviewed by Amy K. Nelson regarding how rookie weekend was going, the city of Cleveland, his baseball career and plenty of other topics.

There was good stuff about Weeden's baseball career in particular in the interview, he talked about how being a pitcher is pretty similar to being a Quarterback all told.

Weeden had some great things to say about the city of Cleveland in the interview, and he called Browns fans one of the best fanbases in all of football. The best quote in the entire interview may have been when Amy asked him what he knew about Cleveland after being drafted there.

His response? "It's cold."
