Recap: Oregon State vs. Arizona State

Sports Network | November 2, 2008

Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Rudy Carpenter was intercepted on a game- tying two-point try, as the Oregon State Beavers survived the Arizona State Sun Devils, 27-25, in a Pac-10 showdown at Reser Stadium.

With the Beavers holding a 27-19 advantage, ASU put together an 11-play, 72- yard drive that was capped with a three-yard touchdown pass from Carpenter to Andrew Pettes with 21 seconds left. The Sun Devils tried to knot the game with a two-point conversion, but Carpenter was flushed from the pocket and forced to throw the ball up for grabs and it was picked off by OSU to seal the victory.

Backup quarterback Sean Canfield led the charge for the Beavers (5-3, 4-1 Pac-10), completing 19-of-28 tosses for 218 yards and two touchdowns. He came into the game after starter Lyle Moevao left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. James Rodgers hauled in eight balls for 103 yards, while Sammie Stroughter added six receptions for 70 yards and a score. Jacquizz Rodgers paced the ground attack with 134 yards on 30 carries, as OSU won its second straight game.

For ASU (2-6, 1-4), Carpenter hit on 15-of-27 tosses for 217 yards and one score. Shaun DeWitty cracked the century mark with 111 yards on 16 carries, while Thomas Weber booted four field goals. The Sun Devils have now dropped six games since a 2-0 start to the season. The losing streak is tied for the school record set in 1929.

The Beavers opened the game's scoring with a Lyle Moevao 11-yard touchdown pass to Shane Morales less than five minutes into the firs quarter.

With 29 seconds left in the first period, ASU capped an 18-play, 66-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal by Weber.

Weber hit a 34-yard field goal in the second quarter and ASU went into the break down 7-6.

The Sun Devils grabbed their first lead, when Troy Nolan returned an interception 41 yards to paydirt just minutes into the second half.

OSU responded with a three-yard scoring strike from Canfield to Morales midway through the third quarter.

The teams then traded field goals, as OSU took a 17-16 lead into the final quarter.

Just a couple of minutes in the fourth period, the Beavers extended their lead to 24-16 courtesy of an 11-yard touchdown pass from Canfield to Stroughter.

The squads than swapped field goals again before the dramatic finish.

ASU set itself back in this one, as it settled for five field goal attempts, while also being penalized 10 times for a loss of 80 yards.
