Mississippi Rebels

2 - 10

Ole Miss football is looking to rebound from a disappointing 4-8 2010 season which saw the red and blue field, statistically, the worst defense in Rebel football history. There is some optimism amongst the Rebel faithful, but while several key starters on offense have returned and a slew of speedy newcomers have taken over key defensive roles, a difficult schedule could keep the Rebels from improving much at all in the wins column.

Barry Brunetti, a transfer from West Virginia and a native of Memphis, Tennessee, has earned the starting job at quarterback. He’ll have the luxury of a veteran offensive line and rushing corps, but will rely on a handful of freshmen and sophomore wide receivers to keep the passing game alive. He is a more mobile, quick footed quarterback who fits well with Houston Nutt's offensive philosophy, but his youth and inexperience should cause him to struggle at times. Still, with senior halfback Brandon Bolden getting much of the action on offense, the Rebels should be able to move the ball and reach the endzone with regularity.

On defense, the Rebels added a lot of speed with junior college transfers at cornerback, safety, and defensive tackle. Defensive end Kentrell Lockett, the team’s leading pass rusher two seasons ago, returns with a medical redshirt after suffering a torn ACL early in 2010. The linebackers and defensive tackles are younger and inexperienced, with star recruit CJ Johnson expected to contribute at middle linebacker early and often as a true freshman. The team may be quicker on defense than its 2010 counterpart, but will that be able to offset inexperience?

The schedule is daunting enough with a newly-independent BCS dark horse in BYU traveling to Oxford to kickoff the season. The home slate of Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia could be even more difficult as road trips to Auburn and Starkville, two places where the Rebels have struggled to earn wins.

Regardless, Rebel fans are excited. A highly-ranked recruiting class, a high-profile quarterback transfer, and a higher-profile season opener have renewed excitement in a fan base so desperately needing some after a forgettable 2010.
