Scratch Virginia Tech junior defensive end James Gayle off the list of potential underclassmen entering the 2013 NFL Draft. Gayle announced Thursday via his Twitter account that he will be returning to the Hokies for his senior season.
Here's Gayle's decision-making tweet:
After much thought I have decided to postpone my NFL ambitions to complete my degree and work towards another championship.— James Gayle (@JGayle99) January 10, 2013
Gayle, a native of Hampton, Va., and the Hokies endured a tough season in 2012, finishing 7-6 overall with a 4-4 record in the ACC. Their season ended with a 13-10 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28, 2012.
For the season, Gayle -- who received second-team all-ACC honors -- registered 43 tackles, 11 of those coming for a loss, along with five sacks. As a whole, Virginia Tech ranked 32nd in the nation defensively in points allowed, giving up an average of 22.8 points per game.
