2014 NFL Draft top 100

Stacy Revere

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney still comes in at No. 1, but the gap is closing.

While putting together this version of the top 100, there was a distinct top five players. The type of players who, at the least, look like certain Pro Bowlers. South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney continues to top the rankings. As expected, Clowney has faced double teams all season and teams are scheming against him.

Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater has done nothing to drop either. He may be skinny, but he plays like a franchise NFL quarterback. Jake Matthews of Texas A&M has smoothly transitioned to left tackle and can block anyone. Anthony Barr of UCLA may not be putting up the big sack numbers he did a year ago, but his athleticism for an outside linebacker is high. The top five is rounded out by Clemson's Sammy Watkins. Other receivers are putting up better numbers than Watkins, but they can't match his combination of speed, elusiveness, burst and hands. It stands within reason that any four of these players could overtake Clowney for the top spot.

Position rankings: QB | RB | WRTE | OT | G | C | DE | DT | OLB | MLB | CB | S

Doing rankings before and during the season often requires optimistic projection. At least that's the methodology we use here. We're judging on where the player is currently at, and has the potential to be by the time the draft comes around in May.

The top 100 features 11 quarterbacks. It can be a challenge to rank quarterbacks accordingly. For instance, Oregon's Marcus Mariota is currently rated No. 24. But if the redshirt sophomore goes pro, he'll almost certainly get drafted highly and his impact on a franchise will be greater than this ranking. But that's just where player like Mariota is right now as a prospect.

As always, these rankings are not an indicator of draft position. They're also going to be fluid up until the first day of the 2014 NFL Draft on May 8. Just because we have a player in the top 10 now doesn't mean he'll still be there a month from now. Similarly, if a player is too low now doesn't mean he won't rise up the board. For now, here is our latest top 100. Have your own? Stick it in the comments.
