Senior Bowl roster taking shape, hits

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

One top quarterback is headed to college football's top all-star game while another won't be able to play in it.

College football's top all-star game is beginning to take shape with 14 players currently scheduled to attend. Every year 110 players participate in a week of practices in front of NFL evaluators, culminating in a Saturday game. This year's Senior Bowl game takes place on Jan. 25.

Arguably the top player who has accepted an invitation is Fresno State's Derek Carr. The quarterback is putting together a stellar season with 3,948 yards passing with 39 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Carr is completing 69.7 percent of his passes and hasn't thrown and interception since Oct. 5 against Idaho.

Aaron Murray of Georgia was invited and intended on playing. But a torn ACL will keep him out of the Senior Bowl, and possibly stop him from participating in much of the pre-draft process. Murray has always been known as a film room junkie, so he'll have to prove his football IQ off the field to maintain any draft status, which shifts between the third and fifth rounds.

Here are the player who have accepted invitations to the Senior Bowl:

Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
Joe Bitonio, OT, Nevada
Chris Borland, MLB, Wisconsin
Chris Boswell, K, Rice
Terrence Brooks, S, Florida State
Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
Kain Colter, QB, Northwestern
Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa
Robert Herron, WR, Wyoming
Cody Hoffman, WR, BYU
Arthur Lynch, TE, Georgia
Keith McGill, CB, Utah
Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio State
Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton
Chris Smith, DE, Arkansas
Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Brent Urban, DT, Virginia
Kirby Van Der Camp, P, Iowa State

Don't expect Colter to play quarterback in Mobile. He'll most likely be moved to wide receiver. Colter was knocked out of Saturday's game with an upper body injury.

The Senior Bowl is still sending out invitations to players. Word has leaked about several other players receiving invitations. Among them are TCU cornerback Jason Verrett, BYU outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy and Virginia offensive tackle Morgan Moses.

The Senior Bowl has also extended an invitation to Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack. Following a game against Miami (OH) in which he forced three fumbles and had three sacks, Mack may not need the bump the Senior Bowl can provide.
