2013 NFL mock draft: Kevin Minter to Baltimore Ravens

The tough task of replacing Ray Lewis begins.

It's been a crazy off-season for the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, highlighted by a massive contract for Joe Flacco and the exodus of two all-time great defenders in Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Add in the free agent defection of Dannell Ellerbe - considered by many to become the top inside linebacker after Lewis' retirement - and the Ravens have a pretty clear need at linebacker.

Team Player Position Height Weight Class
32. Baltimore Ravens Kevin Minter, LSU LB 6'0" 246 JR

Bruce Raffel: "The Ravens addressed some of their needs from losing six defensive starters but the inside linebacker position remains to be solved. The retirement of Ray Lewis and loss of Dannell Ellerbe to the Dolphins in free agency leaves the team with a committee of backups. There is still a possibility of GM Ozzie Newsome signing a veteran, but LSU's Minter is arguably the best inside 'backer in the draft and plays in the NFL minor league, the SEC. He is tough against the run, athletic but perhaps not as quick laterally or in coverage, but behind a solid defensive line and in front of a veteran secondary, can learn on the go and contribute right off the bat as a rookie."

Here's our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

There are few more obvious needs in the draft this year than middle linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens. It might just be a matter of whether they like Minter or Manti Te’o better. Of course, that’s also assuming he doesn’t trade this pick. Reports have been that the Ravens may use Courtney Upshaw inside with Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs on the outside. If that’s the case, a better coverage linebacker would be needed. With that in mind, Te’o might be the better choice. He’s not a great coverage linebacker, but he’s better than Minter. It may give even more credence to Baltimore moving up for Alec Olgetree if he slips. Minter is a solid run stopper, though, and a strong tackler.

That's a wrap on the first round of our mock draft. The second round begins tomorrow morning at 9AM sharp, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles set to make their picks throughout the day.
