2014 NFL Draft tight end rankings

Mark Dolejs-US PRESSWIRE

The best tight ends in the draft this year can create mismatches, a necessity in today's NFL.

In today's NFL, creating mismatches with a tight end is a must for a lot of teams. That is what separates the top two tight ends in the 2014 NFL Draft from the rest of the bunch.

Eric Ebron of North Carolina is the greatest representation of a mismatch in the class this year. While he's built like a tight end, Ebron moves around like a fleet-footed wide receiver. He can make incredible catches away from his frame and has enough speed to get separation up the seam.

Jace Amaro of Texas Tech can do a lot of those same things, but he isn't quite as fast or athletic as Ebron. He has the advantage as a pass catcher, though.

The clear next tier of tight ends is Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Troy Niklas. Seferian-Jenkins was the top tight end heading into the season and is a good athlete. Niklas isn't as far along in his development, but his potential is high.

While those are the top mismatch tight ends in the draft this year, there are several traditional tight ends. They are the kind of tight ends who aren't overly athletic but capable as blockers.
