2014 NFL mock draft: Jason Verrett to San Francisco 49ers at No. 30

The 49ers aren't exactly riddled by need areas on a Super Bowl-contending roster, but that doesn't mean they couldn't use an immediate contributor.

It's been an interesting offseason for the San Francisco 49ers, to say the least. In the midst of covering legal issues surrounding quarterback Colin Kaepernick and pass rusher Aldon Smith, David Fucillo of Niners Nation took some time out of the many pages of legal reading he's undoubtedly doing to make a pick for the team he covers in the 2014 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft.

Jason Verrett

His pick? A favorite in the draft community, and one of the toughest players, pound for pound, in this year's draft class. In other words, he's a perfect fit for the ultra-talented 49ers.

"I suspect the 49ers will attempt to trade up from No. 30, but if they can be assured of getting Verrett at this spot, it really is unnecessary to move up. The 49ers have a need at cornerback for a couple reasons. They have one cornerback with experience signed beyond the 2014 season. Of their remaining cornerbacks, Chris Culliver is facing legal issues stemming from a hit-and-run. He’s not going anywhere for 2014, but as he is entering the final season of his contract, it’s hard to tell what the 49ers' long-term plans are with regard to a contract extension. The 49ers potentially have an immediate need at nickel back, which is where Verrett seems suited coming out of college. If they decide to part ways with Culliver, Verrett has the skill to become an everyday player."

Thoughts from SB Nation NFL Draft editor Dan Kadar:

This mock draft's long-standing nightmare is over. After four cornerbacks were already taken, the best one in the draft is finally off the board. To one of the best teams in the NFL, no less. Verrett may not have the size his other cornerback cohorts do, but he has the best instincts and playmaking ability. For a team like San Francisco, that needs starters at corner, Verrett would fill that need with incredible value.

Kyle Montgomery of Mile High Report is coming your way at 3 p.m. ET with a pick for the Denver Broncos. Stay tuned!
