2014 NFL mock draft: Blake Bortles to Oakland Raiders at No. 5

Will the Raiders use their top-five pick to find an understudy and eventual replacement for Matt Schaub?

Earlier this offseason, the Oakland Raiders swung a trade with Houston, landing veteran quarterback Matt Schaub. Clearly, that does not mean that their quarterback position is settled, but it does buy them a bit of time to develop a quarterback prospect.

Could they draft one in the top five this spring? Levi Damien of Silver and Black Pride certainly believes so. Here's his No. 5 overall pick in the SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft.

Team Player Pos. Ht Wt Class
5. Raiders Blake Bortles, Central Florida QB 6'4 230 JR

Levi Damien: "In this scenario, the Raiders would be shocked to see Bortles still on the board. He has the highest ceiling of any quarterback in this draft and has done nothing but raise his stock since last season ended with a strong combine and pro day. While he is far from a polished product, he may not have to be. The Raiders brought in Matt Schaub to be the starter this season to allow any quarterback they drafted time to develop. Reggie McKenzie would like to follow a similar model to the one he had in Green Bay, where Aaron Rodgers had several seasons to learn behind Brett Favre so he could make a seamless transition. Bortles would be the ideal pick for that plan. Options two and three are Khalil Mack and trade down."

Dan Kadar, our beloved NFL Draft analyst, has some thoughts and opinions to share on the Raiders' mock draft pick of Bortles:

A rarely used phrase: Oakland could be the perfect situation. As mentioned, Bortles could be eased in with Oakland. That would allow his play to reach his great potential if the coaching is right in Oakland. While he probably wouldn't sit as long as Rodgers did, he could learn from a player like Schaub, who before last season wasn't completely terrible.

We have two more picks coming your way this afternoon, and now that the top quarterbacks are off the board, the dominoes will begin to fall. Dave Choate of The Falcoholic is officially on the clock.
