Final 2014 NFL mock draft: Jadeveon Clowney comes out No. 1

The buildup to the NFL Draft is complete with the first round finally beginning tonight. Matthew Fairburn and Dan Kadar offer up their final first-round predictions.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

The long, drawn-out build to the 2014 NFL Draft is complete. It is draft day. After today, we'll go months without hearing from anonymous scouts. Sources will be extinguished. The hottest of takes will be cooled.

Before that can happen, though, there is time for one last mock draft. Well, two last mock drafts. Matthew Fairburn and I are morally contracted to turn in a one-round mock draft the day of the draft. If we do not, the world would cease to exist.

There are a few surprises in our final first-round mock drafts. Those surprises aren't at the top where Jadeveon Clowney is the choice for both of us for the Houston Texans. His fit with J.J. Watt can be argued. Clowney's place as the top prospect in this year's draft cannot. We also matched picks for the St. Louis Rams at No. 2 and the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 3.

From there, things get mixed up, especially with Fairburn throwing a daring trade into his fictional scenario. Trades in the actual draft are impossible to predict, even though plenty are expected. This one involves the San Francisco 49ers, a team with 10 picks and a roster that may not be able to take on 10 rookies.

In these mocks, we both managed to get four quarterbacks in the first round. The order in which they come off the board varies greatly. That's the very nature of the 2014 NFL Draft. For as many mock draft as we've done – and we've done plenty – the landing spots for these players is wildly unpredictable. Here's our final guess for 2014:
