"Don't fret me, brotha'"
There's only one tried and true way to make a great Super Bowl commercial.
Make it funny.
That's what Volkswagen aimed to do this year to show off its 2013 Volkswagen Beetle. The company released the commercial early. I think it's going to be a big hit, mahn:
A 6'3 pasty white guy talking like a Jamaican is pretty funny. VW must have done its research in that area.
Some of the best lines, in no particular order:
- "Joo-lia ... turn da' frown, de' otha way aroun'."
- "Yes-i. The lan' of ten-tousan' lakes. Da' gopha state!"
- "Don't fret me, brotha'. Da sticky bun come soon."
- "Ree-spect, boss man!"
But guess what? Every good Super Bowl commercial needs some kind of controversy, right? This new VW ad has already been accused of being racist.
Can't we just laugh and all get along?
VW has a history of making pretty darn awesome commercials. Last year, it was "The Dog Strikes" back. It was more cute than funny, but still a good ad. Two years ago was the kid dressed up like Darth Vader. Now that's a funny commercial. It will be hard for VW to top that one.
