Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports has spoken to multiple team sources within the Vikings and the reaction to the Randy Moss release has been the same: Are you kidding?
"I just thought, ‘You’re kidding, right?’ This is nuts. We’re just getting to the point where he’s getting on page with [quarterback] Brett [Favre] and the offense is starting to really move the ball and then we do this."
One argument we've been hearing is that Moss has lost it and he's no longer effective. He has just 13 receptions for 174 yards and a pair of TDs in four games with Minnesota this year. Cole's team sources dispute the notion that he's no longer effective on the field.
"Look at the tape. Look at the coverages," one of the sources said. "Look at what he does for everybody else. Percy [Harvin] is running free all over the field right now. The running game is moving along. I don’t even care about the fact that he’s smarter than everybody on the coaching staff. He’s a game-changer.
What I think people are forgetting is what Moss does to everyone else on the field. He immediately commands the attention of the defense and tends to open the middle of the field. That would affect Vikings WR Percy Harvin, who was reportedly "livid" with the decision to waive Moss.
Even if he's not the target on a particular play, his skill set still changes the game and it appears those in the Vikings organization knows that.
