The Minnesota Vikings surprised very few people when they reportedly fired head coach Brad Childress on Monday after getting blown out by the Green Bay Packers, 31-3, on Sunday. The interim coach will be Leslie Frazier, according to a statement from the Vikings.
Frazier has been the team's defensive coordinator since the 2007 season and has interviewed for head coaching jobs in the past, including reportedly the St. Louis Rams job in 2009. He has a solid history on the defensive side of the ball including stop as a defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles (1999-2002), Cincinnati Bengals (2003-04), Indianapolis Colts (2005-06) and then the Vikings.
Frazier will be under difficult circumstances to win the head coach job outright by the end of the season. Brett Favre said after Sunday's game that he would "re-evaluate" the season -- who knows what that means -- and the rest of the team will figure out a way to salvage a 3-7 season.
While his task is indeed difficult, Frazier may also have an edge on getting the job full-time because of reasons related to the potential NFL lockout. As Peter King of SI.com wrote on Monday morning, in-house candidates will be given a harder look this year because any new head coaches may not be able to work with the team until a new labor deal is completed, which could be late into the summer (if not longer). That would encourage continuity, which would help Frazier's position as someone who is already on staff.
