An optimistic Cowboys fan might suggest that Dallas weathered a 17-point onslaught by the Saints in the first quarter and responded by a 13-play scoring drive. A pessimistic, or even realistic, one might point out that settling for a field goal there does little to capture the momentum away from New Orleans.
The Cowboys' 79-yard drive took 7:41 off the clock and was highlighted by a 28-yard screen pass to Felix Jones. But once Dallas got inside the Saints' 10, things came undone. On a 1st down from Saints' 12, Jon Kitna threw a swing pass to Marion Barber that gained only three yards. On the following play, the snap from Andre Gurode was fumbled by Kitna. The third down pass to Jason Witten was a yard short of the first down marker at the two yard line. The Cowboys opted to take the chip shot field goal rather than attempt to convert the 4th and 1.
