Eagles Vs. Vikings: NFL Releases Official Statement On Postponement

The NFL has released an official statement on the postponement of tonight's scheduled Eagles-Vikings game to Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Eastern. From NFL spokesman Greg Aiello on Twitter:

Due to public safety concerns in light of today's snow emergency in Philadelphia, tonight's Vikings-Eagles game has been postponed. Because of the uncertainty of the extent of tonight's storm + its aftermath, the game will be played on Tues night at 8 pm This will allow sufficient time to ensure that roads, parking lots and the stadium are fully cleared. National Weather Service states that a winter storm warning in Phila remains in effect until 1 pm Mon. NBC will (televise) game nationally.

That certainly sounds like a decision made mostly for the purposes of safety, but it's telling that the statement notes that the winter storm warning for Philadelphia will not last into Monday night, and that NBC will be able to televise the game nationally.

Yes, weather-related safety concerns matter. But so do the NFL's broadcast partners.

Eagles Vs. Vikings: Postponed Game Set For Tuesday Night On NBC

Here's the quick rundown of what's happened and what will happen with the Eagles' game against the Vikings originally scheduled for tonight.

Early this morning, the NFL began discussing the possibility of moving the game in response to inclement Philadelphia weather, including heavy snow; that quickly turned into the NFL officially postponing the game until Tuesday night.

The Eagles-Vikings game will now take place on Tuesday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and it will be aired by NBC at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Does that unfairly affect the Eagles? Probably. Having the Eagles postponed hurts the Eagles, who will be fighting for playoff positioning with two games in six days, and may help the Vikings, who could have a healthy Brett Favre on hand to make his 299th NFL start.

And while the postponement may enable fans who would have struggled to get to or from today's game because of the snow to see Michael Vick and the Eagles clinch the NFC East, it certainly seems a bit out of character for the NFL, so outwardly concerned about player safety this season, to be totally fine with forcing players to play two regular season games in just six days, especially at the end of the season.

Eagles Vs. Vikings: NFL Postpones Game To Tuesday Due To Philadelphia Weather

And now we know that the NFL will be postponing today's Eagles-Vikings game.

Philadelphia-based NFL writer Adam Caplan of FOX Sports tweets that the Eagles have said the game is postponed until Tuesday night.

In this case, at this point, the postponement has little to do with whether or not the game will be playable and much to do with the safety of fans.

The game will be played Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern, according to NFL Network. And while that's not a great thing for Eagles fans that might have planned to been on hand to cheer on Michael Vick tonight and will now have to figure out how to make a weeknight game work, it might produce a better game for them.

After all, Brett Favre, seemingly ailing with more injuries than there are varieties of snowflakes, now has 48 hours to get healthy. And regardless of your opinions on Favre, him playing is still a more exciting prospect than rookie Joe Webb starting.

Philadelphia Weather: Snowy Conditions May Force Postponement Of Eagles-Vikings

So why, exactly, is the NFL discussing possibly postponing the Eagles-Vikings game scheduled for Sunday night on NBC? In a word: snow.

Weather all over the eastern seaboard is going to be a bit crazy today, but Philadelphia weather might be smack in the center of a blizzard. Here's the forecast for today's weather at the Philadelphia airport, via flightstats.com:

Today. Snow...mainly this afternoon. Snow may be heavy at times this afternoon. Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches. Brisk with highs in the lower 30s. North winds 15 to 20 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

Tonight. Periods of snow. Blowing snow. Snow may be heavy at times. Total snow accumulation of 10 to 14 inches. Windy with lows around 20. Northwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of snow near 100 percent.

That's some heavy snow, for sure, and it might make playing football at Lincoln Financial Field difficult. But the NFL must also consider the safety of travel to and from the game, and whether fans can or will want to brave blizzard conditions to see Michael Vick play Brett Favre.

Eagles Vs. Vikings: NFL Ponders Postponement Of Game Due To Blizzard

The NFL has a long and rich history of games being played in inclement weather, and snowy conditions have produced some of the game's most striking contests in the HD era. But tonight's game between the Eagles and Vikings would likely be played in blizzard conditions, and that may be a step too far for the NFL.

Pro Football Talk reports that the league is mulling whether or not to play tonight in Philadelphia, keying on NFL spokesman Greg Aiello's tweet saying the league is "discussing (the) situation."

There are a host of problems with this prospect, and ones that may make moving the third consecutive Vikings game due to weather conditions harder than it was to move the first two. The first and foremost problem is that NBC's rights to tonight's game mean that the game would almost certainly be broadcast on network television if moved to Monday night, which would eat into ESPN's dominance of television with the "Monday Night Football" franchise.

No matter what happens, it seems likely that the weather will make tonight's game — in which Michael Vick and the Eagles could clinch the NFC East, and Brett Favre might play his last snowy game — a must-see, even if it doesn't actually happen tonight.
