The legend of Adam Vinatieri continued to grow tonight as he hit another late, go-ahead field goal for the Indianapolis Colts, connecting from 50-yards out. The field goal, with 59 seconds left, gives the Colts a 16-14 lead. All is good, right? The Colts win another NFL playoff game with a late rally and a clutch field goal by Vinatieri? Not so fast.
Antonio Cromartie set the Jets up with great field position, returning the ensuing kickoff 47 yards to the New York 46. The Jets picked up yardage in chunks, the biggest of which came on a 18-yard catch by Braylon Edwards on a beautifully thrown ball by Mark Sanchez. Much-maligned kicker Nick Folk hit the field for the game-winning 32-yard field goal to send the Jets to the next round, and connected. In a game that featured all defense, the final few minutes were frantic and exciting.
Sanchez finished the game without a touchdown pass, but threw for 189 yards and an interception. LaDanian Tomlinson made all the difference on the ground, rushing for 82 yards and two touchdown. Shonn Greene added another 70 yards on 19 carries. Braylon Edwards led the Jets receivers with four catches for 62 yards.
The Colts offense, stagnant for much of the day, only found the end zone once. Peyton Manning threw for 225 yards and a touchdown, but couldn’t find the end zone when it mattered most. Joseph Addai picked up another 60 yards on the ground. Pierre Garcon led all receivers with a game-high 112 yards on five catches, including the Colts only touchdown.
The Jets, a three-point underdog, went on the road and completed the upset, using a strong defensive effort and an offense that chewed clock and kept the Colts off the field. New York now moves to face the New England Patriots next Saturday.
