A few months back, ESPN's Cris Carter was asked to name his top five receivers in the NFL and he rattled off five names and didn't include Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson. Megatron, as he's known, might be the most physically gifted receiver in the league (a Monday Night Football graphic compared his range to a two-car garage) and there was a very strong case that he's top five in the league, even a few months ago when Carter said that.
Well, Johnson apparently wanted to prove something to Carter, or to the league. He started this season catching two touchdown passes in four consecutive games -- tying Cris Carter's record for consecutive multi-touchdown reception games.
Carter interviewed Johnson this week when ESPN returned to Detroit for Monday Night Football and the interview was a chance for Carter to eat crow on what might be the best receiver in the NFL right now.
Johnson's streak didn't continue into Week 5 -- he had just one touchdown catch -- so his name will remain next to Carter's in the record books. But he did a set new record -- most touchdown receptions through the first five games.
Johnson does have nine touchdowns on the season, and he's on pace to shatter Randy Moss's record of 23 in one season.
