Jason Campbell Says Injury May Only Keep Him Out Six Weeks

Oakland Raiders QB Jason Campbell suffered a broken collarbone on Sunday and the NFL trade rumors started swirling that the Raiders would be acquiring another quarterback in his absence. Those rumors came about because many figured Campbell could be out for the entire season.

He spoke to reporters on Monday as he exited the Raiders' facility and indicated that he hoped to be back much sooner than that.

"I'm having surgery today. It was a tough break," Campbell said. "I'm going to stay positive. If everything goes right I could be back in six weeks."

That would put his return at Nov. 27 against the Chicago Bears. It seems like an optimistic timetable for his return so, if he really can get back that quickly, the Raiders may be able to go with Kyle Boller in his absence.

We'll probably know more in the next week or so after Campbell has undergone surgery and started his rehab.

David Garrard Contacted By Oakland Raiders, According To Report

The Oakland Raiders suffered a blow on Sunday when they learned that QB Jason Campbell had broken his collarbone and could miss the entire 2011 NFL season. With Oakland sitting at 4-2 and in contention in the AFC West, there are already rumors cropping up that they're exploring the market for a new quarterback.

Some NFL trade rumors have connected them to Carson Palmer but the Cincinnati Bengals are unlikely to budge in their refusal to trade him. One interesting option out there that is currently a free agent is David Garrard. The former Jacksonville Jaguars QB was released shortly before the season and still doesn't have a home.

Garrard was reportedly contacted by the Miami Dolphins when they lost Chad Henne for the season and the Raiders have now reached out to Garrard as well, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. That doesn't mean they'll sign him -- just that they're exploring their options.

Garrard wants a team that's willing to commit to him and in Oakland he would be on a team that has a shot at making the playoffs. So if Garrard wanted to go someplace where he'll be relevant, Oakland may be his best option at the moment.

NFL Week 6 Injury Report: Jason Campbell Likely Out For Season

SB Nation's medical expert breaks down the most significant injuries from NFL Week 6, which includes the 4-2 Raiders losing QB Jason Campbell to a broken collarbone.

Jason Campbell Injury Update: Raiders QB Breaks Collarbone

Oakland Raiders QB Jason Campbell sustained a tough break on Sunday as he broke his collarbone and is reportedly done for the season. Kyle Boller replaced Campbell in the lineup late in the second quarter and helped guide the Raiders to a 24-17 win. Boller came on with a 14-7 lead and completed 8 of 14 passes for 100 yards. The Raiders lone touchdown after Boller entered came on a fake field goal in which punter Shane Lechler completed a pass to tight end Kevin Boss.

Boller is not likely to retain the starting job for much longer. The team will likely add a quarterback either in free agency or via a trade. While that is being worked out, Boller will probably end up getting the start Sunday since any new quarterback would need to take some time to learn a bit of the playbook. The only other QB on the roster is rookie Terrelle Pryor who recently returned from his initial suspension by the league.

Which ever QB starts for the Raiders moving forward, they represent a downgrade from Jason Campbell. That impacts the entire team in fantasy football. It remains to be seen what a new starting quarterback will be able to do with the current Raiders talent. A questionable quarterback could mean more men in the box against Darren McFadden as well.

Jason Campbell Injury: Raiders Quarterback Reportedly Has Broken Collarbone

Jason Campbell has already left the Raiders' Week 6 game against the Cleveland Browns with a shoulder injury. But now that his injury has reportedly been diagnosed as a broken collarbone, Oakland may have to get used to life without their starting quarterback.

Campbell has been replaced by Kyle Boller today, and Boller has been adequate in relief, completing a bit more than 50% of his passes and throwing no interceptions. But the Raiders have little depth behind Boller, and would need to turn to underseasoned rookie Terrelle Pryor if anything happened to him.

Or, just maybe, the Raiders could use Shane Lechler as a quarterback. The punter has Oakland's only passing touchdown on the day, a 35-yard throw to Kevin Boss on a fake field goal.

VIDEO: Jason Campbell Injury Knocks Raiders QB Out Of Game With Hurt Shoulder

Jason Campbell has left the Raiders' Week 6 game against the Browns with an apparent shoulder or collarbone injury after hurt his shoulder on an awkward landing on this scramble.

Campbell is being examined the sideline after the injury, and the Raiders have inserted Kyle Boller for him. Campbell was six for nine through the air for 52 yards before leaving.

Campbell has led the surprising Raiders to a 3-2 record in 2011, and the wide open AFC West appeared to be within Oakland's reach.

Boller inspires few as the Raiders' second-string quarterback, but the emergency quarterback is even less proven — Terrelle Pryor, who spent most of the early part of 2011 in NCAA limbo, is Boller's understudy.
