We've arrived at bye week season in the NFL, where teams like the Raiders and Packers are on the brink of two weeks off. But with a break coming up, how will teams respond? All content courtesy of SB Nation's odds experts at OddShark.com.
Saying ‘bye’ can be good or bad, happy or sad. Saying ‘bye’ in the NFL can be a real headache for handicappers looking to find an edge on the NFL point spread.
Do you trust a team like Green Bay as a 9-point favorite as they cruise at 6-0 into their bye week? Does a team like Oakland, armed with a new QB with just a week to shake off rust, have more motivation to win big before they hit their bye? What do the trends point to?
In Week 7, six teams come off byes (Denver, Tennessee, Kansas City, Arizona, San Diego, Seattle) and six teams head into byes (Atlanta, Chicago, Green Bay, Oakland, NY Jets, Tampa Bay).
The Raiders are favored at home but face a division foe that has dominated them ATS over the years. And they are trying to cram the playbook into Carson Palmer’s brain after the Raiders boldly traded for the holdout Bengal pivot. Losing to KC would be disastrous, but the Chiefs are 15-4 ATS in their last 19 visits. [Here are Carson Palmer prop odds -- how many passing yards, how many TDs, how many INTs and more.]
As for positive Raider trends, they have taken care of business in the week before a bye in the past decade, going 8-3 ATS. Oddsmakers like them and have made them a -130 favorite on the prop ‘will Oakland make the playoffs’ at Bodog. They have also re-set their season win total number to 9.5.
The New York Jets head into their bye, facing San Diego which is coming off its bye. The Jets are small home 'dogs at most shops tracked by OddsShark.com and are 5-1 ATS in 6 seasons before their bye. They have also been a consistent OVER play in this situation (8-1 past 9 seasons before a bye).
