Santana Moss Injury: Redskins WR Will Be Out 5-7 Weeks, Mike Shanahan Says

Sanata Moss left the Washington Redskins Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers with a hand injury and several followup reports indicated he was likely to miss 3-4 weeks with a broken hand.

It's actually a little worse than that. Mike Shanahan said in his Monday press conference that Moss is likely to miss 5-7 weeks with the injury.

Another injury for a Redskins team that lost Tim Hightower for the season last weekend.

The timing of Moss's return could be important. The Redskins are 3-3, right in the middle of the NFC East race, and host the Jets six weeks from now, and the Patriots seven weeks from now.

Moss has 25 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns on the season.

Santana Moss Injury Update: Redskins WR Likely Out 3-4 Weeks With Broken Hand

Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss broke a bone in his left hand during Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers and it looks like he could miss upwards of three to four weeks with the injury. There will be no concerns about game-time decisions this coming week as Mike Shanahan has already declared Moss out for the game.

Moss leads the team in receptions through seven weeks and will be a big absence for quarterback John Beck when the Redskins head to Buffalo. In Moss' absence, there are a variety of receivers who could step up, but more than likely Fred Davis and Jabar Gaffney will be the primary fantasy beneficiaries of this injury. Guys like Anthony Armstrong and Donte' Stallworth will benefit to some extent, but they are not at the level where you would add them to your fantasy roster.

When you factor in the loss of Tim Hightower as well, this causes some big problems for the Redskins offense. Fred Davis has been the leading receiver in recent weeks, but it will be tough to get as many catches with defenders not having to focus on a Santana Moss. Nonetheless, if you have Davis on your bench, I'd strongly recommend getting him into your lineup. He will see plenty of targets.

Santana Moss Fantasy Stats: Injury Forces Redskins Receiver Out Of Game

It's a bad day for Santana Moss and his fantasy football owners. The Redskins receivers left the field with a left hand injury in the first half and is not expected to return to the game. In limited action, Moss' stats: two catches for 17 yards and no touchdowns.

It's unclear at this point how much time Moss will have to miss.

Moss was averaging 57 receiving yards a game with 284 receiving yards on the season and 2 touchdowns through his first six games of the 2011 NFL season. Moss' yards per game is down nearly 10 yards from last season.

Moss was ranked by Yahoo! as the 21st ranked wide receiver heading into Week 7 taking on the Carolina Panthers.

Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss has a left hand injury and his return is questionable, according to the Redskins official Twitter feed.

Moss was looked at by trainers on the sideline before heading to the locker room. He returned to the sidelines to join his teammates, but has not entered the game. The Washington Post's Rick Maese has more details from the stadium via Twitter:

I can see Moss on the sidelines, and his left hand is heavily wrapped right now. Moss does not have his helmet and won't be coming in for this drive. If we see him again, it prob wont be til second half.

Moss entered the game with the most catches and third-most receiving yards on the team this season. The absence of Moss hurts quarterback John Beck, who is starting his first game of the season for Washington. He will have to look to Jabar Gaffney and tight end Fred Davis to pick up the slack.
