The Bills announced Shawne Merriman would be placed on IR with an Achilles' injury.

The Buffalo Bills announced that LB Shawne Merriman has been placed on injured reserve, which will end his 2011 season with the team. Merriman had been battling a right Achilles' injury and the recovery reportedly wasn't going as well as some had hoped.

Bills GM Buddy Nix offered a statement along with the news:

"Shawne has worked extremely hard, but unfortunately, his Achilles flared back up and it doesn't appear that he will be able to return to the field anytime soon. So we felt it was in the best interest of our team and for Shawne to put him on IR."

SB Nation's Bills blog, Buffalo Rumblings, talked about Merriman's slow-progressing injury on Tuesday morning, before we knew it would land him on IR.

Merriman has been dealing with the Achilles injury for the past few weeks, and that was preceded by a shoulder injury that kept him in and out of the lineup for a time, as well. His coaches have been resting him copiously when he's been healthy enough to play, worried about his being in game shape.

He tweaked the Achilles' last Thursday which kept him out of the Giants game and, now, keeps him out the rest of the season.
