The Cleveland Browns will visit the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in a cross-conference showdown. The Niners are seeking their fifth consecutive win.
Bye weeks are generally a welcome thing for most NFL teams. The San Francisco 49ers may have preferred to keep their momentum going, however. The Niners, coming off a week of rest, will seek their fifth consecutive win when they host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
The Browns are coming off an impressive defensive performance in a 6-3 win over the Seattle Seahawks last week. Seattle managed just 137 yards of total offense and committed two turnovers with Charlie Whitehurst under center. Of course, Cleveland didn't exactly set the scoreboard on fire, but they do get Peyton Hillis back this week from a hamstring injury, which should provide a major boost to the running game.
The maturation of Alex Smith and a stout defensive front has spurred the 49ers to one of their best starts in some time. The team is coming off a win over the then undefeated Detroit Lions two weeks ago, an impressive showing that was overshadowed by a near brawl between Jim Harbaugh and Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz following the post-game hand shake. With a fiery leader at the helm, the 49ers could further cement themselves as one of the league's best with a big win Sunday.
